2011: Full of Video Game Anniversaries

In the latest issue of NAG magazine, I had a rare read of Miktar’s column. In addition to being a columnist and overseas correspondent (East coast of the USA), he is also a former moderator on the NAG Online forum – although was shunted out of the job, probably because he was a massive troll, according to some. It was bad for business.

But he brought up an interesting conversation piece. 2011 is chock full of anniversaries relating to video games. Landmark, revolutionary titles that paved the way for all the games you play today.

Let’s have a look at those he listed:

30th Anniversary: Ultima, Castle Wolfenstein, Frogger, Ms. Pacman

25th Anniversary: The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Castelvania

20th Anniversary: Street Fighter II, Sonic the Hedgehog, Civilization

15th Anniversary: Resident Evil, Pokémon, Diablo, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot

10th Anniversary: Grand Theft Auto III, Halo, Devil May Cry

The ones I care about most here are probably Castle Wolfenstein (without it we wouldn’t have had Wolf 3D, RTCW, and every other game that followed in that series); Frogger (played it a hell of a lot as a child); Street Fighter II (hailed as one of the best fighting games of all time – the measuring stick to which all other fighters to this day are compared); Sonic the Hedgehog (come on…); Resident Evil (made survival horror the popular genre that it is – or was, anyway); Tomb Raider (without it, you probably wouldn’t have Uncharted, maybe even Assassin’s Creed either); Crash Bandicoot (played this a lot as a kid, too); Grand Theft Auto III (one of the best games ever).

But suspiciously there were a few left off the list at some point. I think most of the games he mentioned were released in November or December (I know because I looked them up). So there was some sort of trend he was adhering to.

I’d add in Duke Nukem 3D. It’s the last truly great game in that series, which even DNF failed to topple this year. Released at a time when people still used the term “Doom Clone”, it proved that it wasn’t just another rip-off title – it was THE rip-off title; the undisputed king of rip-offs, taking “inspiration” from several films and other games, as well as pop culture. But it had enough going for it to make it pound for pound the best FPS I’ve played to date, honestly.

Quake wasn’t brought up either. Major oversight there. Also released in 1996 like DN3D, it was the first fully 3D FPS, and debuted the Quake engine. Without this engine, we might not have had every other id Tech engine released to date, and probably every other id game released to date, either. Every Doom, Quake, and even Wolfenstein title to follow used a version of the id Tech engine. Many, many games from other developers to date have used id Tech engines as well. You wouldn’t even have Call of Duty, seeing as all CoD games to date have used snippets of id Tech code in the engines that power them.

Final Doom. All right, so it was a glorified double expansion pack for Doom II: Hell on Earth – but what expansion packs at that!

The Plutonia Experiment was particularly challenging. Created by the Casali brothers, it made Doom and Doom II seem like child’s play for the most part. TNT: Evilution wasn’t that spectacular, but it did see one of the most beloved guys at id get hired – and that man is Tim Willits, who still serves as creative director at id today. He started off as just a mapper, and fan of the original games.

If anything, Final Doom showed that fans could make a decent game, filled with challenging maps and maybe tad innovation that impressed developers so much that they hired them and put them on the payroll. This trend has continued to this day, with modders and mappers being picked from the modding community and given jobs. You often see this with companies such as Valve – Valve is predominantly made of former modders.

So anyway, 2011: what a year – for new games and old!

Red Dead Redemption Not Getting a PC Port… Yet

rdrtr2 Red Dead Redemption came out last month for consoles, and pretty much garnered some of the most impressive review scores of any game this year, save for Mass Effect 2 perhaps.

Now, I never even thought that the PC would ever get a PC port, but Rockstar has spoken of it, and basically says that there aren’t any plans to do it right now, but wouldn’t completely rule it out as a project further down the line.

"As of now, there are no current plans to bring Red Dead Redemption to the PC platform. If that should change, we will let you know."

Most of Rockstar’s other titles, especially the GTA series, has seen console games come over to the PC – eventually. Sometimes it takes a year or so though. So maybe it’ll happen next year.

Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City Discount at Amazon

GTAEFLC I bought Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City along with Metro 2033 the other weekend. I finished Metro 2033, but I’m finishing up with Mass Effect 2 before uninstalling it to make room for GTA: EFLC on my computer.

I came across some post on Joystiq thought that said that the game has been reduced on Amazon to $29.99 for the console versions, and $19.99 for the PC version. That’s $10 off all versions of the game.

Now, I should hurry up and finish the side quests of Mass Effect 2 that I haven’t done yet so I can put this on…

Update: The Xbox 360 version deal is still going, but the PS3 one has jumped up to $32.54, and the PC version up to $27.99. So if you want the Xbox 360 version for $10 off, you can if you hurry.

Reinforcements Have Arrived: Metro 2033 and GTA: Episodes From Liberty City

     metro2033002GTAEFLC003

How did you like the Worms reference? Remember that? Anyway, I got some new games over the weekend: Metro 2033, and GTA: Episodes from Liberty City.

I bought Metro 2033, only to discover that it came bundled with one of THQ’s other games, Red Faction: Guerrilla, which I bought last year. I could have saved a bit of cash there I suppose. It’s also ironic that I was playing RFG the other day, and yet now it doesn’t work. Weird. Probably making way for Metro!

The other game, GTA: Episodes from Liberty City, includes the two DLC packs for GTA IV: The Lost and Damned, and The Ballad of Gay Tony. Admittedly, I didn’t get around to playing GTA IV, but I saw that this DLC bundle is standalone, and doesn’t require GTA IV to be installed. So I got that as well.

The Verge May Competition: Write a Review, Win Red Dead Redemption

The-Verge Monday night’s episode of The Verge saw Pippa Tshabalala announcing a new competition that would run, this time for more than two whole weeks, this month. Competitions used to be much more frequent, but not only was new a programming schedule for the show recently implemented, but a new format for competitions and prizes was instituted as well.

This competition involves those who wish to enter writing a review on any Rockstar developed game ever released. It could be any GTA title dating back to the first one, for instance. Write the review and post it on The Verge’s Facebook page. The competition end on May 28.

Red_Dead_Redemption

The prize for the winner is a copy of Rockstar’s latest and greatest Red Dead Redemption, which has seen very good review scores. One from Game Informer saw it score a lofty 9.75 out of 10.

Techno Times Competition: Win an XBOX 360 with GTA IV

GTAIV_Logo Yesterday was Freedom Day in SA, and the Cape Times failed to have the Techno Times insert inside. But today when I looked, there it was.

Sometimes the Techno Times doesn’t arrive because of holidays or else someone steals it out of my copy of the Cape Times. So I decided for those who don’t buy it or don’t have the TT, I would post this here.

Last week there was a competition for a PS3 with God of War III up for grabs. There’s a new competition offers up an Xbox 360 along with GTA IV for the winner. All of it’s worth R3000 in total. Quite an old game, but not a bad one at all, so I hear.

To enter all you have to do is SMS “XBOX” sans quotations to 34445. SMSs cost R2. The competition ends on May 7. Winners will be notified via phone.

Mod Watch- Terminator 2 Judgment Game for GTA: San Andreas

I was just looking through Mod DB, and saw this mod for Grand Theft Auto: Sand Andreas, called Terminator 2 Judgment Game (instead of Judgment Day).

It’s a one man gang working on this mod which includes cinematics based on the iconic movie, 25 missions as well as textures and models of characters and things from the film too.

Anyhow, the latest news on this mod is that there is a new trailer up. the author, Samuel, says that the game is being delayed, even though it was set for a December 6 release.

I’m such a fan of Terminator 2. It’s one of my favourite movies of all time, and I actually picked up the DVD for Christmas recently, as well as the first film. I still think the T-1000 played by Robert Patrick is one of the scariest enemies from any film.

Apocalypse Then: Grand Theft Auto 2

Ten Year Anniversary of GTA 2! mrgreen

On this day in gaming, back in 1999, Grand Theft Auto 2, the sequel to GTA, was released on Playstation. It was shortly released thereafter on PC, and on Dreamcast and Game Boy Colour the following year. There were noticeable differences between the PC and Playstation versions, specifically. The game was made available as a free download for the PC a few years back.

The game was developed by DMA Design, now known as Rockstar North, and published by Rockstar.

GTA 2 continued the series' top-down play method (discontinued in GTA 3 onwards so far) oddball humour, and gang warfare, and plenty of driving, with awkward controls.

The first time I played this was when I got the free download version off of a NAG cover DVD back a few years ago.

Assassin’s Creed 2 Will Have Sex in it: Because Sex Sells!

It’s been revealed that the game I was most looking forward to before the PC version was delayed until next year, namely Assassin’s Creed 2, will contain a bit of rumpy pumpy. I suppose this was to be expected, seeing as the game is set in Italy, and Ezio is a womanizer, a ladies’ man, as was revealed by Patrice Desilets months ago, and by this other guy, Benoit Lambert, recently:

"Ezio is a womanizer. There’s a bit of sex. I can’t say more."

So I guess Ezio will naturally look and act more flamboyantly than his predecessor, Altair, who had a bit of a stick up his butt.

It’s not known yet whether people will be flying off the handle about this type of content in a game, but I bet they will. I mean, there’s an age restriction there for a reason, and in this case it’s not just because of the violence and stuff, but now because of some couch rugby too. GTA: San Andreas’ Hot Coffee fiasco went on for years until recently when Take-Two settled their lawsuit for $ 20 million.

Why should adults get upset over sex in a video game if the game is only meant for adults anyway, and not kids? They’re a bunch of prudes, that’s why.

I mean if anything, this news should help sell the game possibly. Some have claimed that it's all a marketing stunt to get even more people interested in the game. I mean, this is the game that's competing with Modern Warfare 2 next month.

But, I can also reveal that there is a secret message hidden within the game’s title that says it all; that we should have expected this all along. Check this out:

Assassin
Ass-ass-in

Disgusting.

Rockstar says no GTA Film: Thank you

Movie games are all the rage, with a number of major titles having films made, or at least a lot of talk about the "possibilities".

Rockstar says it won't pimp out GTA and make a film out of it. It wouldn't work anyway. Think about it- you'd probably wind up with another Crank with Jason Statham in it. I hated that film the first time I watched it, but then the other times I just laughed when I saw it.

Recently I saw that film Meet the Spartans, which had a scene with a guy running around hijacking people and picking up guns and things to kill people. That film was ridiculous.
