Jagged Alliance Gets New Publisher, In Development Again

Last year, almost all hope on Jagged Alliance 3 ever seeing the light of day was lost when it was reported that development on the title had ceased and the game was possibly cancelled.

The German publisher known as bitComposer Games, which recently published Stalker: Call of Pripyat in Europe, has now obtained the rights to Jagged Alliance 3, which has been in the proverbial development hell for years now. Not only Jagged Alliance 3, but apparently the entire Jagged Alliance IP has been obtained from Strategy First.

"Although Jagged Alliance 2 was published over ten years ago now, the game still represents a milestone in the genre and boasts a huge following of loyal fans."

"We are delighted to acquire this classic game for bitComposer, and want to continue the success of the previous titles in the series, while giving the new version a contemporary look, bearing in mind the strong features of its predecessors."

A new developer for the game still has to be revealed, and platforms confirmed, but it’s a safe bet that the PC will be in there somewhere, seeing as that was the plan initially. A release date is said to be somewhere in 2011, so it won’t be out anytime soon, obviously. Apparently the game is in a preliminary development stage.

Jagged Alliance 3 Still in Development Hell, Possibly Cancelled

It’s been ten years since the release of Jagged Alliance 2, and for about half that time we’ve been waiting for Jagged Alliance 3.

The developer most recently said to be in charge of developing the title, Akella, is said to have stopped working on the game, originally according to a German website.

It has one of the most complicated development histories of almost any game. MiST Land South was the developer for the game, as well as Jagged Alliance 3D, before Akella eventually took over. It was headed for a Q1 2010 release until just recently. Strategy First, the publisher still has the rights to the game.

To tell the truth, I’d given up on ever seeing playing this game anyway.

Other similar titles to Jagged Alliance have popped up over the years, with some questioning a possible relation to the canonical series. These include, in addition to Jagged Alliance 3D and 3: African Alliance (cancelled), Brigade E5: New Jagged Union, and Hired Huns: The Jagged Edge. It appears that this latter game might be the original Jagged Alliance 3D. Much of the content was changed seeing as GFI had lost the rights to the Jagged Alliance IP. Notice how most of these titles either have “Jagged” or “Alliance” or a synonym for this in their titles, and have been published by the same companies.

The original developers and publishers of the first two games, SirTech, Madlab Software, and TalonSoft, closed down years ago.

At the moment I still have Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire on my PC, and I have JA 2 Gold as well as the original Jagged Alliance.

On this day in gaming, in 2002, Jagged Alliance 2: Gold Pack was released.

Jagged Alliance 2 happens to be one of my favourite games, and at the moment I still have Wildfire installed on my PC. I’ve played Jagged Alliance 2: Gold Pack recently as well.

The Gold Pack includes Jagged Alliance 2, Unfinished Business, as well as a basic scenario editor. The original Jagged Alliance 2 is patched to v1.10, and also comes with a number of improvements and changes. The game was originally released for PC, but the v1.13 mod for the game has seen it ported onto Linux.

You can pick up Jagged Alliance 2: Gold Pack if you want to play a classic. Otherwise you can also try the original Jagged Alliance 2, Unfinished Business or Wildfire, the standalone addons.

The Gold Pack It is also available from Steam and GameTap, digital distribution services. These versions contained bugs like infinite money and corrupted save games, but as of July 17, 2009, the various bugs appear to have been fixed.
