Dead Cyborg Episode 2: Halfway To Release

dc1 I was taking a look through my bookmarks and saw on Dead Cyborg’s Twitter account that Episode 2 of this free-to-play beggarware title is getting a little closer to being released. It’s halfway there to be exact – as far as donations go. Endre, the one-man developer behind the project, claims that the donation meter is 50% full.

The actual development on Episode 2 is coming along too. There was a trailer of it released not too long ago, and it’s looking pretty good. This time, the player ascends to the surface and sees first hand the aftermath of the apocalyptic war that took place, and drove people down in to bunkers in the first place.

Twitter: OMG! Where are my Followers?!

twitter_logo_header I logged into my Twitter account yesterday, and got a nasty shock. All of my followers were at 0. And that went for the people I was following as well: 0.

I thought: has my account been hacked? Did all the people who were following just all get tired of my nonsense and stop following me all at the same time?

No, it turns out that my third guess was the right one - sort of. It was the result of Twitter resetting, after a bug had been exploited which allowed one to force someone to follow them.

Venture Beat puts it’s better than I can:

“All you had to do was tweet “accept” followed by the person’s Twitter handle with the “@” sign included, and they would immediately follow you.”

And a well-known example of this would be “accept @jesus”

Anyway, it should all be fixed by the time I log in today.

[Update]: Yes, it is fixed.

More Duke Nukem Forever Footage: Leaked Video

Duke Nukem Forever has made some what of another comeback when it comes to news this month. Firstly we all discovered lately that George Broussard was on Formspring answering questions and so on, but he’s reluctant to speak on DNF.

Then on Twitter, it was said that April 1st was supposed to be the day that DNF went to gold master, and began its road to an eventual release this year, if Take-Two hadn’t messed it all up.

Now something that’s been online since December 2009 which nobody had discovered until now, has surfaced. It’s yet another video clip showing off some leaked footage of DNF.

Some of this has been seen before, and the rest hasn’t.

Some have tried to pass this off as an official trailer, but George Broussard was asked on Formspring if it was, and he replied thusly:

“No. That second trailer is not official and is a low quality fan made trailer created out of some leaked footage a "fan" grabbed from a level designer portfolio site. The music and voice was all added by the video creator.”

Too right. The Duke impression wasn’t too good. It certainly wasn’t Jon St. John, for sure. And the guns sounded pretty weak. But the video is entertaining nonetheless.

Another Developing Craze: Formspring

logo_small First it was social networking sites like Facebook. Then along came micro-blogging with Twitter. Now another developing craze seems to be coming along with something called Formspring – which I’ve seen popping up in the last week or so.

And all ready I’ve noticed two legends in the video game industry on there, answering questions. Because that’s what Formspring is about. Apparently it’s a social networking site that allows people to ask a person questions, and then they answer them. It’s like a big open interview.

Those two legends I mentioned are George Broussard of 3D Realms, whom some cite as the failure behind Duke Nukem Forever, and none other than John “The” Romero, formerly of id Software, Ion Storm, and now Slipgate Ironworks, and creator of Daikatana and other greats.

Examples of some questions for John:

Q:Of all your cars, which was your favorite?

Q:Are you and Tom Hall still friends?

Q:Steve Jobs or Bill Gates ?

Q:Do you play Quake Live?

And George:

Q:Why wasn't there a sequel to shadow warrior?

Q:What happened to LevelLord?

Q:What makes Duke such a badass? And what's your favorite Duke quote?

Q:Why don't you answer all the questions you get here?

And of course, as you can imagine, George will answer anything… that isn’t about Duke Nukem Forever.

So, if you have any questions for these guys or anyone else, then head over to Formspring. Likely some other well-known industry vets will crop up there sometime, or all ready are.

I saw it all on Twitter just now, and then saw the screenshots. Metro 2033 on the PC is going to have support for DirectX 11 and THQ has confirmed that it will have NVIDIA 3D Vision support as well.

There are some Hi-Res shots posted on FlickR for you to see.

So, Metro 2033 will be one of the first games this year, alongside AVP and Stalker: Call of Pripyat to support DX 11.

The game should be out next month.

Apocalypse Then: AAA’s One Year Anniversary

mushroom1

That’s right. Today marks one year since AAA, this blog, was started. It was Saturday, the 24th of January, 2009.

I’m still trying to figure out what the hell it is. It’s like a blog about video games, entertainment, and other stuff that interests me. Basically anything to do with entertainment of the virtual sort has some place on here. I’m constantly coming up with new types of posts, and widgets and stuff to add to the blog, and some of them are just plain crazy – hence the term random madness (or magic), but they hopefully entertain and inform, or just get some sort of reaction from whoever comes across it.

Some of the information on here is news that’s going around, and original posts that have been taken out of my demented mind (like Keen Dreams). It’s just about putting what’s in my mind on the internet. I’ve started other blogs as well, and plan on starting more this year. I’ve joined Facebook, Twitter, and the game-less madness that is Digg, but AAA was my first blog on the internet, apart from my two HubPages profiles that have been up for a while. They were my part of my first presence on the internet, and they will celebrate their two year anniversaries later on in the year. As I’ve read time and time again: hubs are not blogs!

So, as for the next year and beyond, I hope to convey more of the latest big interesting news stories, rumours, and original stuff that somehow ties in with my love of video games, movies, music, TV, and more.

And if you don’t like, I’ve only got two words for ya!

What are Your Video Game/Entertainment/Internet Inspired New Year’s Resolutions for 2010?

Each and ever year we make resolutions that rarely ever get done, and by the end of the year, we’re not only thinking well, that was a waste of time, but we start on making new ones.

So, anyhow, it’s 2010, and to put a spin on New Year’s Resolutions, I thought I would share some of my ideas on how I could improve my video game, entertainment, and internet habits in one way or another.

Now, traditionally, I think I always made ten on a list, but you can have however many you want. Some of them are ones I plan to follow, others are just there but will likely never happen, and some are ones I thought that I would share that are actually other people’s resolutions.

Here goes:

  • Write more articles and reviews

I write these on old and new games that I play every year, and I have been doing so for years, although only online since about 2008. I need to step it up and get more articles and reviews published.

  • Start new blogs

I always promise myself that I’ll do this. AAA is the one blog I’m most active on, and I’ve tried to start other blogs but I hardly ever post on them. Part of me thinks, meh, just have everything on one blog as just one big mash-up, but I’ve also been thinking of diversifying and starting other blogs and websites dedicated to different topics and niches.

  • Write for another site or blog

I usually don’t like being told what to do, and that’s why I run my own blogs and do my own thing, but I always see other people on some blogs who write for multiple different blogs. Whether they get paid or not for doing so, I don’t know, but I guess it could help with exposure, and you can get backlinks and more traffic.

  • Get other people to write for my blogs

Once again, I don’t know whether they’d get paid, but I’ve thought about this too. Sometimes I like to take a day or two off, and there are so many stories out there that it’s hard to cover on my own. That’s usually why I take just one or two big stories that interest me and post that each day, and in addition to that I sometimes have more original stuff on the blog as well.

  • Host a blog carnival

I’ve been thinking about doing this, mainly because over at prosody.co.uk, where James Newton hosts the video game blog carnivals every now and again…well, that’s just it: it used to be practically every month, but then it went to every other month, and the last carnival was in October 2009. I was thinking about hosting my own sometime. I’d set up a separate e-mail address and then people could submit their posts and stuff and I could do a post about it every month or every other month, featuring the best ones, like the top ten or something. That would help me get some traffic as well as for others.

  • Join some more affiliate programs

I’ve got a few affiliate programs going, and I’ve thought about expanding for some time by joining some others. I’m hoping that when it comes to this blog, maybe one day Steam will start a program. How cool would that be, seeing as Steam has 70% of the digital distribution market? But like some say, it’s run by Valve, so what are the chances…

  • Play some bad or average games

This is just one of those hypothetical resolutions that probably won’t come true. Each and every month we comb the video game reviews for “good” games, and ignore the rest. A good video game is often considered as one that gets 90% and over in a review, and the rest is just mediocre fluff or rubbish that nobody’s interested in. I dare myself, and I dare you to play a “bad” game, and make up your own mind as to whether you like it or not. You might be surprised that it really does come down to your own opinion. Most say that Wolfenstein was boring, others say it was rubbish. I actually didn’t mind it at all.

  • Play some classic games

I once said this in a forum thread, that I refer to “old” games as classics, and was subsequently jeered at by all the other posters, seeing as they were all into the latest and greatest. But to learn to really appreciate what we have today, you should go back and play some of the old games, not just to see how ugly they look by today’s standards, but what it was like to play the actual game; when FPSs and RPGs were new and MMOs weren’t even around. You might even be impressed at how advanced and beyond their time some games actually were. Have a look at System Shock and compare it to Doom, and you’ll see what I mean.

  • Get into social networking and bookmarking more

I just joined Facebook the other day, and Twitter several months ago, as well as Digg, but I must be honest, social bookmarking as a whole just makes me kind of nervous and like I’ve heard others say, “I hate social networking”. I know there’s a difference between the two, but I didn’t want to have two separate points on the list.

  • Play an MMORPG or a multiplayer game

A smile crept across my face when I read an article last year about a group of people who don’t do online gaming, like in World of WarCraft, and what have you. What!? Yes, there are people like that on this earth. I guess you could argue that they have lives and what have you.

But I have to be honest, I haven’t played WoW and for the five plus years it’s been around, I’ve generally just ignored it. As for multiplayer, again, I haven’t played multiplayer for a long while now. I engaged in LANning a lot when I was younger, at the computer academy at school, but that was different. You could just walk in, sit down, and hook up a game and play. When I was invited to a LAN party, I usually avoided the whole situation, because I didn’t want to have to unplug my whole rig and take it to the place, then bring it back and it doesn’t work properly. It’s happened to me.

Multiplayer on PCs can be kind of frustrating like that.

  • Buy a console

I’ve played on a PlayStation, and various other consoles over the years, but I haven’t actually owned one. I know…

I’ve had plans to buy either a PS3 or an Xbox 360 for years. The whole console controller affair turned me off, but I mean, with a PS3 I read that you can plug in a keyboard and a mouse, seeing as FPSs and RPGs are usually my games of choice.

Besides, in regard to my point on PC multiplayer, multiplayer on consoles is generally easier as you can have another person just pick up a controller, plug it in, and away you go. I imagine it would also be a lot more hassle-free to buy games and such for a console what with the upgrading nonsense when it comes to PCs. It’s been years since I’ve upgraded my rig, and it shows in my games, whereas with consoles, they have more longevity, if you know what I mean.

Recently it was said that the Xbox 360 wasn’t even half-way through its lifespan. So it might still be around in 2015. Although, sometimes the graphics on a console version aren’t as good as the PC version – if there is one, what with console exclusives like Uncharted 2 or Gears of War 2… or Killzone 2… or Halo 3: ODST. You get the idea.

  • Play an indie or free title

We all go on about the major releases. Those are the only ones that make the most anticipated lists. But what about the indie titles, the free games, the mods that sometimes get talked about on the side. A lot of love and effort goes into these games, and it’s not about the money, like with major developers with their publishers and licence games and so on.

  • Watch less porn

I read this on a forum recently where this guy said it was pretty self-explanatory. And it is. Porn is cool for a while, but eventually it becomes a nasty little habit, and you find you can’t live without it. Ron Jeremy, the famous, bald, little porn star with some large equipment, claims that video games are worse for kids than porn. Well, Ron, I think if anyone was ever exposed to some of your self-sucking situations, that would likely scar a kid for life more so than a game would. Sorry, but it’s true.

Twitter Account, Sh*t My Dad Says, To Become a TV Sitcom

There’s an account on twitter called Sh*t My Dad Says, and it’s full of tweets by a guy named Justin Halpern. The thing is that these tweets are actually sayings taken from his father, a cynical, bad tempered old man, who likes to make comments and jokes in a cutting, sarcastic way.

Think Blackadder except American, old, and bald.

Well, anyway, these tweets have become sitcom gold, as it’s been harvested for script ideas, and Justin Halpern will be the producer on the show, seeing as it is his twitter account. I can just imagine that although it’s a good idea on paper, it’ll likely star someone like Larry David, and end up just like Curb Your Enthusiasm or something. I love that show. Or else, if not Larry David, it will be someone like that old man from My Big Fat Greek Wedding/Life. There are several old guys who could play the role, if you think about it.

The account has over 843 705 followers, and yet, he's only following one. Figures, seeing as he's one of those Hollywood types. His previous attempt at the big time failed apparently, but this one seems to be getting a lot of attention.

Although I first read about this weeks ago, it’s all over the news now, with local newspapers covering it and not to mention copying other articles verbatim. That’s right Techno Times; you stole that article practically word for word from another newspaper.

My dad has expressed interest in this news piece though. In fact, for years I thought of coming up with a sitcom of my own involving my dad or at least the things he says seeing as he’s kind of the same. At one point I even made some audio stories about it when I was younger. They were funny as hell. Maybe sometime in the future I’ll upload them somewhere.

The other day for example, my dad was busy washing the dishes or something, and a dish slipped, and he uttered some profanities.
Then my brother walked in, and said, “Did someone call me?”

My father replied, “Not unless your name is ‘Jou f*ckin’ m*er!’”

You had to be there.

Perhaps I should start my own twitter account with stuff like this…

AAA now on Twitter

I've just made a Twitter account today. I'm just getting everything set up at the moment. The username isn't what you'd expect, since all the other ones I wanted were taken- even Apocalypso!

There's a "follow me on twitter" link in the left hand sidebar which I hope to make prettier with perhaps a button or banner or something.

Eidos Recruiting for Thi4f Team

Eidos Montreal tweeted recently on Twitter that they are looking for an Art Technical Director, Senior Game Designer, and a Senior Level Designer.

This time last month, it was pretty much the same story- looking for gaps to fill in their development team. So, they're still getting the team together, and I suppose once Deus Ex 3 is released, all efforts will be focused on Thi4f, and I'm sure many people are praying that, first and foremost, they change the name of the game.

Alan Wake for PC Petition

Speaking of petitions, it seems that Alan Wake fans at www.alan-wake.de have undertaken a petition to get Microsoft to release the game on PC. Currently the game is set to be released only on Xbox 360.

The fate of the PC version was in doubt for some time, and eventually it was revealed that work on it had been cancelled.

An account on Twitter, remedyalerts, highlighted the effort, but VG247 discovered that the account did not belong to Remedy, but in fact another fan community at www.brightfalls.net.

Anyway, if you've got five minutes, go ahead and sign. I did. I always do- when it's for a good cause anyway. I really like the look of Alan Wake from what I've seen in the trailers.

John Romero says "Leave me Alone!"

Last month, John Romero tweeted some stuff about id Software selling out, and other such stuff. Of course gaming journos ate it up, and gamers the world over hated on John.

Now he's caught on after reading through a lot of these reports, and has said the following,

"I was wrong about Fallout 3 buying Doom. Zenimax bought both from their $300m coffers. Acquire!"

Followed by:

"Was reading comments about my id/zenimax tweets a month ago. Should not be a news story, lol."

But John, a little bird (it was John Carmack! lol) told us that you like the spotlight. Well, hint taken, I won't say any more...until next time!
