AAA – Now Playing: BioShock 2

BSR2 Months ago I bought BioShock 2 and to my disappointment I couldn’t get it to work for some reason.

But just lately after updating my DirectX drivers and other such things, I decided to give the game a go once more. Sometimes these things happen.

And I was right: this time it works nicely. So, the game was released several months ago, back in February, and might not be as good as the original according to some, but here I am, catching up on playing this game. And I quite enjoy it too.

Right now on this play through I’m harvesting the little sisters, but like the first game, I probably end up going back for a second play through where I’ll be Mr. Nice guy and save them from a life of servitude and horror.

Hydrophobia Coming to PC and PS3 in Addition to Xbox 360

Hydrophobia Hydrophobia was once thought no too long ago to be an XBLA exclusive title. But Dark Energy Digital, the developers, confirmed recently that the game will also appear on PS3 and PC sometime, after the Xbox 360 “exclusivity” wears off.

Both retail and digital distribution versions of the game are planned for Xbox 360, while the PS3 will only get it via PSN.

Pete Jones of Dark Energy Digital:

“Hydrophobia is of a production quality that only the best at retail can match and yes it is of a comparable gameplay length to an AAA retail game."

"We produced the engine principally because it conveys a massive productivity benefit - basically it allows a small team like ourselves to produce a big budget game."But it had a spin off effect of producing a game to an impossibly small file size. Impossibly small meaning under 1GB."My bizarre analogy for this is Viagra. It was developed as a heart drug but had an interesting side effect."

"Size matters. Not sure that the industry has quite grasped this one yet. All of a sudden everyone talks about downloading games. But this bright digital future has a big elephant sitting in their virtual room. Until developers produce games with IW or its equivalent it will remain a dream."

I’ve seen the trailer for Hydrophobia not too long ago on The Verge, and the latest NAG cover DVD, which came out on Thursday the 29th, also had it on there. It looks like a cross between Dead Space and BioShock. It’s a third person game set on some vessel that’s flooded with water – hence the name hydrophobia: the irrational fear of water.

Interesting fact: hydrophobia is a symptom of rabies.

Possible BioShock MMO in Development [Rumblings]

BioshockLogo Some rumours were confirmed in the last week, and now new ones, or not so new ones it seems, have surfaced.

It was finally confirmed after a lot of rumours that a new X-com title, called XCOM is in development at 2K Marin. But something that could quite possibly be another title kept under wraps at 2K is a BioShock MMO.

This apparently isn’t the first time that this rumour has cropped up, and 2K has reportedly suggested in the past that they might have plans to do just this. About two years ago, in March 2008, it was said by the boss of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, that it was a potential possibility.

As for a particular studio working on the project, rumours have it that it’s 2K Marin, but remember that 2K Marin is working on XCOM, or at least the Australian branch is, mainly [complicated, I know].

It’s kind of funny though, when I think about it, a BioShock MMO could just work.

New X-Com Title Confirmed, FPS Title Called XCOM, First Screenshot

XCOM

A rumour that’s been around a long time is that another series of games from the 90’s, X-Com, will be getting a modern resurrection of sorts. 2K Australia is planning to make another X-Com title, but with a twist: it will be an FPS, or first-person shooter, title this time.

For a while, it was suspected that 2K Boston, now known once again as Irrational Games, the team who worked on the original BioShock, would be working on this title. But Ken Levine is adamant that he has a game in development that is the first in a new IP.

2K Marin, developers of BioShock 2 was then also widely reported as the team handling this new title, referred to as XCOM, but it’s been said that 2K Australia is the lucky bunch that will head development on the project. 2K Marin and 2K Australia are sister studios, along with 2K Novato, 2K California, and 2K Canberra. 2K acquired the license to the IP from Atari a few years back.

2K president Christoph Hartmann:

"With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise. Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride."

Teaser site write-up:

XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

There are some concerns about this whole XCOM FPS business though, seeing as X-Com: Enforcer, a TPS [third-person shooter], was a flop. The games before this were turn-based strategy titles similar to Jagged Alliance or Fallout, except they had you fighting against UFOs and aliens and such.

This new XCOM will be available for PC and Xbox 360.

VGD Alert: BioShock & BioShock 2 for $50 at Amazon

     BS1 + BS2

                                                  = Save!

This isn’t the first time such a package has been put together. For a while now, a deal has been on at Direct2Drive, which will let you get your hands on BioShock & BioShock 2… but at a price of $62.95

Now Amazon has a similar deal going on, but other than it being the retail versions and not the digital ones, the price tag is considerably less, at $50. All you have to do is add both games to your shopping cart, and you basically get BioShock for free, or one cent, if you’re really counting.

The conditions are that you can only do this with the PS3 or Xbox 360 versions, not the PC ones, and the Limited Editions don’t count either.

I haven’t yet played BioShock 2, but my brother says it’s good. I have played the first game, and I can say it’s one you shouldn’t miss.

7 Top Irish Characters from Video Games [St. Patrick’s Day]

St. Patrick's Day

7topirisha

Today is St. Patrick’s Day, and St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, as we all know. I thought about what I could do as a special post or editorial for today, and I thought, why not try and find as many games as possible that take place in Ireland, or contain Irish characters.

As far as I can tell, the list is short, seeing as most games take place in America as we all know, or centre around American characters. Call of Duty games might have had the odd soldier whose name was O’Doyle (typically Irish), who would end up getting slaughtered and replaced by more cannon fodder.

What I’m after is characters who are central to the game and its plot. I managed to find about 7, which is fitting, seeing as they talk about the luck of the Irish and all that, and 7 is a lucky number.

Why did I decide to do this? Well, other than a lack of notable Irish characters in games, I am part Irish myself, from my dad’s side. I looked up on the internet not only to try and find some Irish characters in video games, but also to see if anyone else had tackled this before. It turns out that last year, That Aussie Game Site tried their hand at it, and managed to get five Irish characters which they claim are the “only 5”, of which this article shares three. The others are all mine, I tell ya.

The following are in no particular order, except chronological (by date of appearance).

I present “7 Top-o’-tha-mornin’-to-ya Irish Characters from Video Games”

Nina Williams from Tekken (1994 - )

NW You’ll never guess who I originally had in this place before I decided at the last minute to add Nina here instead. John McClane. That’s right – Die Hard man. But he’s Irish-American though, and there are plenty of those around. Nina was actually born and raised in Ireland, even though I never really knew about it. But it’s true – it’s right there on Wikipedia. She’s one of the only recognised fictional Irish female characters in games. So how could we be sexist and not include her; this blonde sex bomb?

Nina was born and raised in Ireland along with her younger sister, Anna, who later became Nina’s arch nemesis. Nina was trained in martial arts from an early age, and was destined to become a cold blooded assassin who just happened to be able to kill with her good looks and fashion sense too.

the rivalry between the two sisters began, and not just through fighting, but due to the fact that both craved the attention of their father, Richard Williams. Some call it a love/hate relationship. Both later blamed each other over the death of their beloved father, when he was, in reality, murdered by someone else when the girls were still very young.

Not much information was ever given on Heather Williams, the girls’ mother.

AW Despite being born in the early 1960’s, and way into MILF territory age wise, Nina managed to stay youthful looking because of her participation in cryonic experiments, as did her sister, who either couldn’t be without her in life, even though they hated each other, or wouldn't stand for Nina keeping her youth, an Anna losing it. After nearly twenty years in cryonic sleep, Nina suffered Amnesia when she was awoken. And to top it off, she even had a child through In vitro fertilization during cryosleep, and was later sent to kill her son, whom she didn’t actually know was her son. Complicated.

Anyway, she later got most if not all of her memory back. I’m starting to think of that film The Long Kiss Goodnight, now.

Personality wise, Nina might be attractive, to say the least, and has been featured on many hottest girls of games lists, but inside she’s a machine; and a mess. Can you blame her though? Unlike most girls, she was trained early on to be a killer, and has been through a lot of emotional torment. It’s left her desensitized, cold, and without humour for the most part.

Even though she was born in Ireland, in later Tekken games, her voice sounds American in accent. Could be poor character development, or intentional, seeing as perhaps she lost her Irish-ness during her lifetime. Shame.

Aside from starring in ever one the games in the Tekken series, Nina was also the protagonist in her own spin-off title, called Death by Degrees. She was about the only good thing in it, apparently.

Also an interesting thing to note is that South African model and singer, Candice Hillebrand is set to play the role of Nina in a film adaptation of Tekken. No doubt the movie will suck, but still.

The Green Beret (Jack O’Hara) from Commandos (1998 - )

CGB The Green Beret was known by another name in the Commandos series: killing machine. Oh, and there’s that terribly ironic nickname of “Tiny”, but call him that if you’re not his friend or part of the team, and he’ll likely bust you up nicely.

They claimed that alone, this Dublin-born one man army could take out an entire enemy regiment. Big, strong, specially trained, and armed to the teeth, as well as using tools and employing several tactics such as burying himself in the ground, and springing out on an unsuspecting Nazi, Jack O’Hara was the all-rounder, general use, indispensable soldier that was used in almost every mission.

And when he ran out of bullets, or lost his trusty knife, he could just use what brought him to the dance – and put him in prison, sentenced to forced labour: his fists. Jack was a boxing champion in the army during the 30’s, before the war, and knows how to use his hands as weapons, knocking out or potentially killing people who dare cross this ill-tempered, rebellious, imposing brute. He landed up in prison because he punched a superior officer. His sentence was later suspended when he agreed to join the Commandos, and despite his problems with authority, he ironically became their leader. He was later promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Patrick Galloway from Clive Barker's Undying (2001)

PG

If there was one game that likely few people remember or haven’t even played, that was very Irish indeed, it was Clive Barker’s Undying. The game took place in parts of Ireland, and it was easy to tell, by looking at the rolling green hills that surrounded the Covenant Estate. Although the Covenant family was English, the protagonist in the story, Patrick Galloway, was Irish, and had fought in the Great War under the command of Jeremiah, and travelled the Orient after being exiled from his homeland by Count Otto Keisinger, who supposedly killed a young girl and framed Patrick for the murder..

He was eventually called back to Ireland in the 1920’s by letter from Jeremiah, asking him to help with his paranormal investigative abilities, and solve a mystery that had been plaguing his family for decades, since he and his siblings were very young.

Patrick, in addition to using weapons, can use magical spells due to his arcane knowledge. He can use his revolver and powers at the same time, seeing as even though he is predominantly left handed, he has remarkable ambidexterity. This is all long before BioShock 2 came along.

He can also summon the power of the Gel'zibar stone around his neck, which is responsible for the scar he has over his eye, and the burns he received during the war. He can also use his ability to scrye, which lets him see visions from the past. He at one point even goes back in time to retrieve the Scythe of the Celt in order to go after all of Jeremiah’s siblings and execute them.

Along Patrick’s travels in the game, he eventually comes across another Irishman named Sedgewick, the lighthouse keeper, who’d lost his son, Conor, who was killed by Ambrose, of the Covenant siblings (and voiced by Clive Barker). There were several Irish characters in the game, mainly the help, or servants, in and around the estate and its grounds.

Patrick is probably the nicest, most down-to-earth, and good-hearted man in this bunch of stereotypical bastards. And he’s even named Patrick, just like St. Patrick. Saintly Patrick. Some similarities there, perhaps.

Atlas from BioShock (2007)

BA Okay, I know, if you’ve played through BioShock, you know who this guy really is, but for most of the game, you were ordered around by Atlas (named after Atlas Shrugged, the inspiration for the game), a forty year old, politically ambitious family man, who opposed the maniacal Andrew Ryan, the man behind Rapture.

And you did exactly as he said, as he uttered the words “Would You Kindly” in his faux Irish accent. Atlas says his motives for helping Jack, the player, are to find his wife, Moira, and his child Patrick, and escape rapture.

You never actually meet Atlas in person, and he only communicates with you from a distance.

In the end though, about two thirds through the game, you find out that Atlas ended up being none other than smuggler, mobster, and conman Frank Fontaine. He’d been posing as this character after faking his death after supposedly being killed by the Rapture security force.

So, Atlas isn’t really Irish at all. But for most of the game he appears that way, and let’s be honest: did anyone really see it coming, when he revealed who he really was? Yeah, go ahead and lie, you… liar. But I had to feature Atlas here, because he’s one of the most memorable characters from not just BioShock, but any game in recent memory.

Colin Moriarty from Fallout 3 (2008)

CMF3 Colin is probably the first character in Fallout 3 that really shows you how bad some people in the world outside the vault really are.

He is the local saloon owner in Megaton, the town nearest Vault 101. He inherited the saloon from his Father, who came to the wasteland from Ireland, and took Colin with him. He was killed when Colin was in his late teens. At the time the game takes place, he’s about fifty, evidenced by his full head of grey hair and scraggly beard, which makes him look a little older, actually.

In less than five minutes of speaking to him, he’s popped that little bubble you were living in before escaping out to the wasteland, and also spilled the beans on your father’s supposed whereabouts, after he asked you for some money, that is. Of course that early in the game, you might not have the money, and so you’re tasked with hunting down one of his former prostitutes, Silver, who worked at the saloon along with Nova, and Colin’s slave bartender, Gob the Ghoul.

It’s possible that Colin isn’t the only Irishman in Fallout 3. There are at least two others who might be of Irish descent although there’s no evidence besides the names. There’s Moira in Megaton, whose name and red hair might make one think she’s Irish. And there’s Reilly of Reilly’s Rangers. But these are suspected people of Irish origin, whereas it’s confirmed that Colin is in fact from that part of the world.

Of course, Liam Neeson, the  actor who voiced the part of the player’s father, James, is an Irish actor.

Frank Bilders from Far Cry 2 (2008)

FBFC2

Okay so Frank may not really be that central to the plot of Far Cry 2, seeing as you can play as any character really, although they do have different stats and such, which is to be expected when you can choose from a line-up of different people to play as.

Needless to say, I played as Frank in Far Cry 2.

Speaking of a line-up, Frank has been in and out of trouble with the law his entire life it seems. He grew up in war-torn Belfast, Northern Ireland, and pretty much went the same way as his father, who went to prison for being involved in a bombing.

Frank ended up being recruited by militants, and acted as a courier when he was in late teens. He then went onto extortion from there, and became well known and wanted by the police. He was arrested by 22, and sentenced for five years because of involvement with the IRA. He was sent to The Maze, a prison in Northern Ireland, and was said to have killed four other inmates before being brutally beaten and “knee-capped” when he was ambushed in the prison machine shop. It was after this that he spent time in the prison hospital, and was later released.

He left Northern Ireland, and then in his late twenties went all over the world, presumably as a mercenary for hire as well as delving in other illegal endeavours, in parts of Europe and Asia. It was this point that he was no longer just fluent in English and Irish Gaelic, but also learned to speak the big two languages of the world: French and Spanish.

After the events of 9/11, he decided to give retirement a go, and left to go and live in South Africa (where I am!).

No doubt Frank isn’t the prettiest guy in the world, probably has been in a bunch of bar brawls, likes to wink, and wears green tops = Irish.

Sean Devlin from The Saboteur (2009)

Sean More recently, we had another Irish character in The Saboteur, yet another title set in World War II, and his name was Sean Devlin.

Sean started off as a mechanic and later on got into race car driving. He comes across another racer named Kurt Dierker, a German fella, and also a Nazi, who caused Sean to lose the race in the German Grand Prix when he shot out one of the tires on his car.

Later on, he decides to help the French Resistance and oust the Nazis from Paris, but for his own reasons: his French friend, Jules, was killed by Kurt, after both he and Sean were captured and tortured after they tried to sabotage Kurt’s car – an act of revenge for making Sean lose the race.

Sean moves on to Paris after the invasion of France, and feels remorse for his friend Jules’ death. Sean wants revenge again.

Sean, based on the war hero William Grover-Williams, embodies the old Irish stereotype to a T (or whiskey in his case). Sean is a brawling, drinking, smoking, cussing, womanizing rebel, looking to take on the Nazis all on his very own. The only thing he seems to be lacking is red hair.

And I realized the likely reason they decided to make Sean Irish in the game, was because one of the creative sorts on the team who made the game was Irish. Could just be coincidence though.

Other Irish Characters that might exist [Best of the rest]:

These characters below were ones that haven’t been included in the list, otherwise it would’ve gone over 7 characters. And I wanted to stick with that number for the purpose of the article. Some of these games mentioned below I haven’t played, and these characters I haven’t even seen. So I didn’t think I could bring myself to write in depth on them.

It’s possible that the below characters might be featured in a follow up article, “7 More Top Irish Characters from Video Games”. Maybe next year? Funny, once you get to researching, there are more fictional Irish characters out there than you think. Only a few of them are truly Irish though, and not Irish-American, or anything.

Fox McCloud from Star Fox and Super Smash Bros Brawl

Some people argue that this character might either be Irish or Scottish, apparently. Never played either of the games, though.

Sergeant John Forge from Halo Wars

This character was confirmed by one of the developers as probably being Irish, although not much thought was put into it while developing the character.

Packie, or Patrick, McReary and family from GTA IV

Irish-American gang member.

Henry from No More Heroes

Never played it, never seen him.

Vince McMahon from WWE games

I guess this could count, although he’s more of an Irish-American. Vinnie not only is the chairman of the board of the WWE, but he’s also appeared in some games based on the wrestling brands, either as a wrestler or a commentator, some of which I’ve played. I guess this would also mean that Shane McMahon and Stephanie McMahon, who’ve also featured in some of the games.

Other characters who have either appeared in some wrestling games or will in the future could include Dave Finlay, Seamus, Balls Mahoney, and Hornswoggle. Quite a few in the WWE. I wonder why…

Pretty much everyone from Folklore

Read that this game is apparently like an Irish Fable or something. Wouldn’t know since I haven’t even played it before.

More dudes who have games, but mainly Irish-American:

Alex Murphy [RoboCop]

Joe Quimby [The Simpsons]

Leon S. Kennedy [Resident Evil]

Marty McFly [Back to the Future]

John Connor [Terminator]

John Clark [Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six]

John McClane [Die Hard Trilogy]

BioShock’s Arcadia Demade in Doom II

This is quite old. The original was posted at the end of February, and the first I heard of it was early March, like the 2nd. Anyway, it’s made its way all over the internet, and ended up here eventually.

Some guy who was involved in the making of BioShock and BioShock 2, Jean-Paul LeBreton, demade the great level in BioShock called Arcadia, which was probably one of the spookiest and most well-designed places in the game. He “demade” it in Doom II.

ArcadiaDoomII

“Inspired partly by TIGSource’s amazing Bootleg Demakes Competition, I used a modern Doom level editor called SLADE to recreate Arcadia and the Farmer’s Market, the sections of BioShock on which I was the primary designer. It’s a monster of a level, crammed full of weird little BioShock-to-Doom transmutations and symbolism. If you’re a fan of either game, I hope you enjoy it.”

And the best part is that you don’t just have to look at it. He’s put it up for download. Included in the zip file is the Doom WAD, instructions, as well as developer commentary on the level. I’m glad to see that some people other than I haven’t forgotten about the classics.

Demakes are all the rage right now. Remember that Left 4 Dead demake? I might just give this a try. I’ve got ZDoom and Doomsday around here somewhere…

Release the Payload: BioShock 2, Dante’s Inferno

image image

Well, BioShock 2 should be out today, and will no doubt thrill a lot of people. Reviews so far indicate that the game is a successful and worthy sequel to the original.

The game is supposed to be out today, the 9th of February, in North America, but I was listening on The Verge the other night, and Pippa said it would be out in South Africa on the 11th, which is Thursday. She also talked about some competition coming to The Verge, where there would be some giveaway of a BioShock 2 Collector’s Edition sometime. So make sure to watch The Verge this week, and get the details.

The Verge appears on Vuzu, Channel 123 on DSTV, and to win these competitions you usually have to SMS or text from your Vuzu account online to stand a chance.

You can order BioShock 2 on Amazon for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. You can also get the game at Direct2Drive, and the offer is still on where you can get both BioShock 2 and BioShock 1 and save 10%, but I doubt it'll last long.

Another game that releases today for consoles in America is Dante’s Inferno, although other territories like  Europe and Australia should all ready have it. Reviews for this game have been lukewarm to good, with critics saying it’s really just a God of War clone and doesn’t bring much originality to the table, but it’s still worth playing if you’re a fan of the genre.

You can pick up Dante’s Inferno from Amazon for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Portable.

Video Games Coming This Week (02/07 – 02/13, 2010): BioShock 2, Dante’s Inferno

bioshock 2

AAA’s Pick of the Week: BioShock 2

It’s finally here. One of the most hyped games for 2010 so far: BioShock 2. The title takes place ten years after the prequel and sees the player take on the role of a Big Daddy Prototype and use all new weapons, plasmids, and tonics too. And it’s just BioShock 2… not “BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams”.

Another game which has gotten a lot of attention for a long while is Dante’s Inferno, a game similar to God of War. That will be consoles only.

Other than that, there’s a Stargate game, which I didn’t even really know was coming, and Sins of a Solar Empire gets two addons.

Links as usual go through to each game’s detail page at Amazon, Steam, etc., where you can pick up the game of your choice.

TrailerBlazer: BioShock 2 Launch Trailer

On The Verge on Wednesday, it was stocked full of trailers, but good ones. Usually it’s one or two worthwhile games a week, but this episode showed trailers for about three or four games that I’m waiting for this year.

BioShock 2 Launch Trailer

One of these was the launch trailer for BioShock 2. It shows the Little Sister running from a Splicer, only to be saved by none other than the Big Daddy, except it’s your character, the Prototype Big Daddy, and he drills that Splicer, baby!

Then there's a bit of peace and quiet before another full fledged ambush from some more Splicers, including what looks like Coach from Left 4 Dead 2 – this big African dude who takes on the Big Daddy and actually kicks his @ss for a while before being shocked while standing in a puddle. He had your number, big guy.

And then there’s another of the main characters, and antagonists, in the game, the Big Sister, who breaks the glass ceiling overhead, drops down and floods the whole room, before she and the Big Daddy clash in the middle before a screen comes up reading “We Will be Reborn” and then going to black.

BioShock 2 should be out on the 9th of February 2010, or Tuesday next week, on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.

BioShock 2 Preorder Deals at Amazon and Direct2Drive

BShock1 BioShock 2 is releasing next month, and needless to say everyone is talking about it. And now, as we get closer to the day, Amazon as well as some digital distribution services have come up with some good deals for people who preorder the game from them.

Let’s start with Amazon’s preorder deal:

This is sadly only for the PS3 version of the game, but if you preorder the BioShock 2 special edition, you’ll get a big daddy costume for PlayStation Home. It’s a model of the prototype big daddy that you’ll play as in BioShock 2. Not just any old Big Daddy.

On the plus side, even though the Big Daddy costume is only for the PS3 version, the Special Edition is still available for Xbox 360 and PC. Stuff that’s included in the edition: an art book, posters, an audio recording and more.

    And now for Direct2Drive’s offer:

If you preorder BioShock 2, then you get the first game free! That saves you $20 right there. Plus you also get 10% off the price of BioShock 2. It may not be the special edition, but it sounds like a better deal to me.

2K Boston Acts Irrationally: Changes Their Name Back, Starts up Website, Talks to People

I had to put that in the title. It’s been some news going around lately, that the studio formerly known as 2K Boston, formerly known as Irrational Games, has changed their name to Irrational Games…if that makes sense.

You see, Irrational Games was mainly known back in the late nineties for co-developing the epic System Shock 2 along with the now defunct Looking Glass Studios, as well as some other titles like SWAT 4 in the mid-noughties (hate that word), and then another big hit – BioShock. This was the studio’s swansong under that name, because after that, they became 2K Boston.

    ig

Now, years later, 2K Boston has changed their name back to Irrational Games. They’ve launched their new website which all ready has a podcast up called “Irrational Behavior” and talks about game ideas that didn’t quite sell, like Division 9 (no, not District 9, although there is talk of that game, but that’s a whole other title, and not by Irrational), kind of like a tactical shooter title like SWAT 4 mixed with a zombie shooter, I suppose like Left 4 Dead 2.

Chris Kline, the Technical Director at Irrational Games, also posted in the ttlg forums (which has forums dedicated to the Thief series, System Shock 1& 2, Deus Ex, and BioShock) lately, writing the following:

“On the site we'll have regular podcast episodes and articles that reveal games and ideas that "didn't make it", and generally give the community more insight into our studio and the development process.

So if this sounds interesting to you, please stop by and check out the forums, podcast, and articles.”

Ken Levine also posted something up on the official site:

“The Irrational Games website is about secrets.

Secrets. We’ve all got ‘em. When we ship a box to GameStop or Best Buy, it’s only part of the story. There are so many secret elements that go into our games. There are the levels that got cut. There are the monsters that died in childbirth. There are the million interactions a development team has in the long, frustrating, terrifying and often thrilling process of making a video game.

Some of you first heard about us when we released BioShock. Some of you have known us since our first game back in 1999, System Shock 2. Many members of the Irrational team have been with us since either the beginning or damned close to it. Some of them have come on board more recently. They all have a part to play in the development of this website. You’ll hear their voices – quite literally in the case of our “Irrational Behavior” podcast .You’ll get to see some ideas that never made it in our “From the Vault” section that launches next week.   You’ll get to hang out with the team in our forums-and there you’ll get to tell us what you think as well. And we’ll be listening.

And yes, we will tell you about the game we’re working on right now. Just not today.”

I like the website design so far, and it looks as though this studio is opening up more and going the more social route. And let’s face it, nowadays it’s probably a good idea.

So, I wonder if BioShock 2, which should be released next month, will have Irrational Games in the opening logos as well as the credits, or if it’ll still be 2K Boston? The money’s on Irrational, probably.

Went Christmas Shopping, Got a Good Gaming Deal

Well, the Christmas tree has been put up, and of course now it’s all about the last few weeks before Christmas…and that means Christmas shopping.

I’ve been going through a lot of brochures lately looking for some good local game deals, and I did see a few which interested me.

So, off I went to the local mall, Tygervalley, and I was looking at some classic games. A lot of them have are available at between R49,99 and R99,99, and not just “old” games - games like BioShock, Mirror’s Edge, Mass Effect, Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil 4, good games that were released in the last two or three years.

I was looking at some of the good old games and I was tempted to just take them all (the mall, get it?) but I was looking for some games in particular; ones I hadn’t played before. I came across a good deal in Operation Flashpoint. It’s the full game, plus the two addons, Cold War Crisis and Resistance. A 3-in-1 deal for R49,99. I played the demos of these games years ago, but I haven’t yet played the full versions of these games after all this time. After being kind of disappointed with Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, I picked this up and bought it. I’ve read that the original is better than OFDR.

I still think that it was an odd choice, but I mean, at R50, if it doesn’t turn out to be so good, it’s no real loss to me.

I was also looking for a copy of Thief: The Dark Project, seeing as my disc isn’t working anymore, and I also want to get a hold of Deus Ex, ever since I saw it on Destructoid’s list of Top 50 games of the decade.

You know, I disagree with most of that list, but that’s life, huh?

I actually want to go back there with my brother or even on my own again, just to see if I missed anything, and perhaps pick something else up.

    Bioshock 2 Box Art Revealed

I'm a big fan of video game box art, and recently I took a look at Mass Effect 2's latest effort. Despite the box art being kind of "ho-hum", I wouldn't be discouraged, and decided to take a look at Bioshock 2's new box art.

It's not bad, and features the prototype Big Daddy, different from the usual big daddies, which you'll play as in Bioshock 2, as well as one of the creepy Little Sisters on the thing's back.

From the art and such I've seen of the game, it looks as though there will be different variations of Big Daddies, and even a Big Sister too.

It also looks as though they'll be sticking with Bioshock 2, and not "Sea of Dreams" as a subtitle, which I think might have actually been better.

Guy Makes Model of Laser Rifle From Fallout 3

So, I was just reading that somebody made a real life model replica of the Laser Rifle from Fallout 3.

That's pretty good, despite my post I made sometime ago about the weapon giving me tinnitus, it is still one of my favourite weapons in the game.

I've often fantasized about shooting the wild guinea fowl outside my house, since they make so much noise. One sits up in the Oak tree outside carrying on, with a most horrible, raspy croaking.

I often think about shooting it with that same Laser Rifle and disintegrating it into dust just like in the game. No witnesses, no evidence...

And he's made a Portal gun and a BioShock Big Daddy costume as well. Despite some of you who would say "get a life", he's received a lot of praise for his efforts, and his blog seems to be booming.
