Call of Duty: Devils Brigade - MIA

Bang! You’re dead! No, I shot you! Mom!

A BlogSpot blog was spotted, which was started this year, belonging to one Leonid Korostyshevskiy and contains some leaked images of yet another Call of Duty title, that perhaps very few people know about, besides the people making it of course.

Call of Duty: Devil’s Brigade was a World War II themed FPS, but instead of taking place in Normandy like most of the run of the mill WWII shooters, this one was to be set in Italy.

It was being developed by Underground Development, most notable known for being involved with the PS3 version of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars as well as Guitar Hero: Van Halen, and was going to appear on PS3 and Xbox 360, but the project was shut down when the studio was closed by Activision, and it didn’t see the light of day. Not all that surprising or saddening, seeing as people are tired of WWII shooters nowadays, and Activision latched onto Modern Warfare instead.

Looking at the dates on the screens, it looks as though these were taken in 2007, the same year as CoD 4: Modern Warfare and before World at War. And if you look at the bottom it says there “CoD 4”. Apparently the game played a bit like Ghost Recon, and there’s even some clips of gameplay footage on YouTube.

Doing some research, there was a Devil’s Brigade, also known as 1st Special Service Force, which was active during WWII. It was comprised of both American and Canadian Commandos, and they fought in Italy and Southern France, before being disbanded in 1944, before the war’s end. The Devil’s Brigade has been the influence behind a few films and doccies, one of which is Inglourious Basterds.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Details: 4-Player Co-op, Crossbows, Wiiiiiiii!

Call of Duty: Black Ops, officially announced recently, has some more details that have been revealed. They say that the game will have will have co-op mode for up to 4 players, much like World at War, and that one of the game’s weapons will be the scoped crossbow – something that isn’t featured in many FPS titles that I can recall, apart from the Half-Life series. And this crossbow is obviously meant for more silent take downs, but if you get into a firefight, you can swap out the normal bolts or quarrels for explosive ones, which sounds like something out of Thief. And these will likely make for some mass destruction as you aim for explosive barrels to take out a number of commies all at once.

USA Today also got a look at one of the missions from the game. It’s reportedly called “WMD” [likely short for Weapons of Mass Destruction], and takes place in the Ural Mountains in 1968, during the appropriately named Cold War. This is where the SR71 Blackbird part that everyone’s talking about takes place, as you play a spotter directing a squad on the ground, guiding them on how to approach and take out a bunch of commies. Then later on you get to control one of the soldiers. These Black Ops soldiers end up jumping off of a cliff, which no doubt sounds like something out of Lemmings… or Modern Warfare 2.

Much like Medal of Honor over at EA, American and Russian veterans are being consulted and contributing to Black Ops’ authenticity. Among these is Major John Plaster, formerly of the Studies and Observation Group in Vietnam, as well as Sonny Puzikas of the Soviet special forces.

Mark Lamia:

"Our writers are focused on telling an epic story. You will see the evolution of some of these characters through time and the conflict. When you meet with these people you can't help but feel inspired about what they are telling you and it opens up new avenues of gameplay."

There’s speculation that we’ll be able to see more of Black Ops at E3 this year. No word on whether there will be a mode similar to Nacht Der Untoten where you get to shoot zombies and so on.

Call of Duty: Black Ops will be out later this year, on November 9, with a version also be coming to the Wii, in addition to the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Call of Duty: The War Collection for Sale at Amazon

Something was witnessed on Amazon as well as GameStop just the other day, and that thing was Call of Duty: The War Collection. It’s a pack which includes most of the WW II themed Call of Duty titles that have been released over the years. It has Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 3, and Call of Duty: World at War. It’s lacking the first Call of Duty though.

Call of Duty 2 was developed by Infinity Ward and released in 2005, but the other two were developed by Treyarch, while IW moved on to develop the Modern Warfare series of games. Treyarch is now working on Call of Duty: Black Ops.

This bundles seems to be for the Xbox 360 only at the moment, with a PS3 and PC version speculated to arrive later on, but it might just be an exclusive. The release date is scheduled to be somewhere in June 2010, and should sell for $59.99.

Call of Duty 7: Vietnam Rumours Arise Once Again

I remember years ago it started off as a joke, or a wouldn’t it be cool? topic in gamer circles, but the rumours have persisted over and over, and now another one says that Treyarch, the guys behind World at War, will be the one to develop the next Call of Duty game, supposedly set in Vietnam – an infamous topic not only in real life, but in gaming too.

There have been attempts in the past to recreate events from one of the worst wars of the twentieth century – one that should have taught the US not to venture into territory that they don’t know, and that the enemy knows off the back of their hand.

The one I remember playing most recently would be Men of Valor by 2015 (the guys who made MoH: Allied Assault). It was praised by some, but I didn’t enjoy it much at all. There have been others like ShellShock and ShellShock 2 which failed miserably.

It certainly hasn’t been explored as much as World War II, in any case. But one thing that was mentioned in these rumours is that the title will basically just be based on Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and Apocalypse Now – three Vietnam War movies that are often mentioned and sited as inspiration.

Another rumour to consider is that the game will come out in 2010. One wonder if there’ll be any zombies in this one.

It's Left 4 Dead vs Call of Duty: World at War, and Valve is Feeling the Heat From the Torches and Pitchforks

A second map pack is coming out for CoD:WaW, and will contain another zombie map.

Left 4 Dead on the other hand, is getting a sequel called Left 4 Dead 2 all ready, which has enraged fans of Valve. Apparently there's a boycott over at Steam where over 10 000 (I've also read it was as much as 16 000) fans have pledged not to buy the product when it's released.

If you were wondering- no, Modern Warfare 2 will not contain any Zombie mini-games, seeing as it's not being developed by Treyarch, like CoD:WaW was.

I still wonder if the whole Zombie thing from CoD:WaW will continue on as a separate game, seeing as it's so popular. People don't seem to care about the regular CoD:WaW multiplayer. They're still killing the undead.

The Wish Granter- Call of Duty: Vietnam

Rumours have now been going around about a new branch in the franchise, and instead of World War II or Modern Warfare, it’s going to be in Vietnam or something.

As I’ve said before, Call of Duty’s WW II exploits are getting a little stale, with mainly just the same stuff (the Russian campaigns have been more or less the same since the first one), but with prettier graphics. I liked the American campaign of World at War, with the Pacific Front being explored more, and it gave a little taste of what might come in the form of this Call of Duty: Vietnam, if it is real. And why not? It’s just a natural progression, and could, and should happen sometime. Even Medal of Honor did a Vietnam game, Men of Valor, which was okay.

The first time my hopes were raised was due to an April Fool’s day insert in an issue of NAG magazine in 2008 or so, where they had a fake box cover reading Call of Duty: Vietnam, and the picture had a couple of marines with M16s jumping out of Huey helicopter as it hovered over the grassy plains- sort of like that part in We Were Soldiers, with Mel Gibson. Even though it was all a joke, I just got excited about the idea that one day we might get it. This latest rumour then is also not much to get excited about on alone, but when you start to think about it, you can picture it.

Vietnam is both a rose and a thorn in the side of American culture, and perhaps the culture of others nations. Yes, the Americans withdrew, and they lost over 58 000 men, and it was reportedly one of the most terrifying wars ever fought, according to survivors. But on the other hand, think of how many people treated veterans when they came back home. There was that line from the trailer of ShellShock 2: Blood Trails, a game based in Vietnam, which came out recently (and sucked apparently): “A country that doesn’t want me.” That stuck in my head.

Imagine bits of your favourite Vietnam films, like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Born on the Fourth of July, Apocalypse Now, We Were Soldiers- those are some of my favourite films of all time. Now I think it’s time to have a collection of some good, memorable games set in Vietnam too.

Another Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack

This time it’s been imaginatively titled Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2, and from the video I’ve seen it actually looks quite thrilling. But has anyone noticed that people are obsessed with this Zombie thing? Sometimes I think CoD has turned into Doom or something.

Maybe they should just develop an entire game, and call it Nacht Der Untoten or All Nachtmare Long, and just have a story about survivors of World War 2 battling zombies- undead soldiers come back from the grave to consume the living so that nobody wins the war. Left 4 Dead was just like that, in a way- released as a multiplayer game right from the start. I think if they ever did, Nacht Der Untoten or All Nachtmare Long should definitely have a singleplayer too, and not just multipayer.

Games and violence…against animals?

Okay, so now gamers are not only racists (Resident Evil 5), and psychotic killers (every FPS shooter game), but now they’re sadists and animal haters too.

Breanni Lucci, who is the president of a private high school’s Animal Rights Club, started a petition after seeing her brother shooting dogs in Call of Duty: World at War. Apparently, more than 100 classmates have supported the petition which she will send to Activision.

The last time we had something like this was when Nintendo demanded that id software had to take the attack dogs out of Wolfenstein 3D for the Super NES version, which were replaced with giant rats.

The killing of dogs isn’t the main aim of the game, as you have to take on the axis forces of Germany and Japan in the game. These were also violent dogs that could kill the player, and so if you were to leave them alone, they would either be gunned down by someone else or they would kill you. That’s self-defence in my book.

Once again, clueless people who don’t play games rush to conclusions and act without thinking. Let’s hope Ms. Lucci doesn’t take up politics and we end up with a Jane Thompson on our hands.

The Atomic Oracle: Nacht Der Untoten 2

If you’ve read it, you’ll see that I made a prediction about a map pack being released for Nacht Der Untoten, a mini-game of sorts contained within Call of Duty: World at War.

Just when the whole Nacht Der Untoten thing seemed to be fading somewhat, Treyarch is going to release a map pack for the game on March 9 that will add three new multi-player maps, and a new map for the Nacht Der Untoten enthusiasts, called Zombie Asylum.

Okay, so there’s only one map, and the name I suggested, ‘Tag Der Untoten’, was a little off, but that was a joke anyway…

Current Gaming Trends: Nacht Der Untoten

What the hell is this Nacht Der Untoten that people are going on about lately?

Well, Call of Duty: World at War, the latest title in the COD WW II shooter series, features a bonus level that has this name, which translates from German into ‘Night of the Living Dead’. The level is unlocked once you finish the main campaign as far as I know, since I’ve played the game.

It can be played in both single-player and multi-player mode, and it entails human players as soldiers taking on German zombies. It’s only one map though, and yet so much fuss is being made over it. It plays similarly to Counter-strike, with money being awarded for doing certain tasks and you are able to open up certain areas of the level and buy weapons and other equipment with your hard-fought-over cash. It could also be compared to Left 4 Dead, another game with zombies released lately.

You progress through rounds that get harder as you go, with stronger zombies that also grow in number and are faster.

NAG magazine has really taken to this map lately, even producing a strategy guide and a custom made wallpaper. It seems to obviously be an office favourite when they’re slacking off as usual, and nearly missing deadlines.

Oh well, we’ll see how long it lasts, unless there’s a map pack full of zombie missions released. Perhaps an original title like 'Tag Der Untoten' would be fitting.
