Cats That Look Like Hitler [Surfing]

kitler This blog isn’t strictly restricted to video games, but all forms of entertainment – and that might include this thing that I’m about to post. I came across a website the other day, which isn’t new but hey, we all find out about different websites at our own pace.
This website is what the title suggests: all about cats that look like Adolf Hitler, which they call Kitlers.

These are some of my favourites below. You can see the side partings, and the moustache. Very striking similarities. It’s usually these white cats with black blotches on them that get top marks.

Not surprisingly, their names are usually Adolf, Adolph, or Hitler. The top cat on the site’s gallery is called Moose, but I don’t think he’s the best lookalike at all.

Resurgence in Rickets in the U.K.: Games Blamed

I read this the other day and even talked about it to someone.

It’s been found that rickets, a disease chiefly caused by lack of Vitamin D, is making a comeback in the United Kingdom (England and other places for those of you who don’t know). It’s become increasingly common, and rickets was thought to have all but died out years ago.

Among the things that people do that can lead to rickets is lack of exercise, not getting out in the sun enough, and poor diet. And this can cause bow legs, cancer, and even diabetes.

Sitting inside all the time playing games and watching TV, surfing the internet. These are the things that doctors are saying are to blame. And they may be right. Remember kids, take a break every hour for at least fifteen minutes, go outside, eat your veggies, drink your milk and other stuff, you know. If you’re over 18, then dammit, you should know better by now.

Hell, where I am right now, I could never sit inside all day. It’s way too hot, so I go for a splash in the pool sometimes.

My dad has type 2 diabetes, and I reckon it’s in no small part due to his sitting around all day, and constant eating.

Sunday Times: 40 Years of the Internet, and Doom Mentioned

This past weekend, there was a main feature in the Sunday Times magazine, claiming that sometime in 2009 is the fortieth anniversary of the world wide web, even though this is likely widely disputed, and events did happen before 1969 that led to this wonderful invention called the Internet coming into our homes. By the way, the writers mentioned, and I guess I should too even though I know this, that the World Wide Web and the Internet aren’t the same thing.

Anyway, I think there was one bit along the time-line of the internet, spanning from 1822 to the present, which featured about 19 main events, that caught my attention, and that was “Doom” at number 11.

The Sunday Times writes:

“Not only one of the greatest and scariest games ever made, Doom was arguably the internet’s first killer application. id Software’s bloody and brilliant (and hugely controversial) “first-person shooter” was released via shareware over the internet- meaning that the first seven of the game’s 28 levels could be downloaded free. It is estimated that those seven levels were installed on more than 10 million computers within two years. As well as being the first must-have game that could be downloaded from the internet, it was a fantastic advert for what networked gaming could be. It could be played by up to four people via a local area network or a modem, and introduced the tern “deathmatch” into the language.”

I thought there were more than 7 levels in the shareware episode of Doom (There are 9; 10 in the Xbox version. And there are 27 levels in the full version of Doom; 36 in Ultimate Doom), but anyway. What can you expect?

Powerless

Today we were without power right from 8 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon. Some vans from Eskom came to trim the trees because apparently they were getting in the way of the power lines. In the end the guy in charge said that our trees weren't so bad after all, but they still proceeded to do the rest of the neighbourhood and not to mention, took some rather long tea breaks as well. I had to cope without power for hours.

I had a plan though. I stayed up late last night to work on my blog a little, check my accounts, and do some other stuff online. So I went to bed at about 4 am and slept until 11. I went back to bed in the afternoon, all in an attempt to waste time until the power came back on, hoping that it would do so by the evening otherwise I would be pissed. The whole episode reminds me of the power cuts we had in the past few years and right in the bloody middle of winter too.

Eskom still hasn't sorted out the whole power crisis thing, and some areas still have scheduled outages to this day. And thanks to them, I also have to put up with the irritating little messages at the bottom of the screen when I watch TV that tell me to use power sparingly, with that picture with a needle and a power gauge with green, yellow, and red sectors. It's all so reminiscent of the scare tactics the Bush administration used with the terror alert system.

It just goes to show how much we rely on technology like television, computers, the internet and the like. Today I actually became so desperate that I started typing out things on my Nokia E90, including this post.

What does AAA stand for?

It's not an abbreviation of anything. It just means the best of the best...
