Apocalypse Then: Blood

Developer: Monolith Productions
Publisher: GT Interactive (Atari)
Engine: Build
Platforms: MS-DOS
Release dates: June 20, 1997
Genres: First Person Shooter, Western

On this day in gaming, in 1997, Blood was released.

Blood is an FPS game based on the build engine used in Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior by 3D Realms. Originally it was going to be an Apogee Software game under the name of "Horror 3D", but was sold to Monolith who developed and released it, making it a cult classic, particularly noted for its violence.

The player takes the role of Caleb, an undead gunslinger out for revenge against the Cabal and its leader, Tchernobog (voiced by Monolith CEO and host of the Jace Hall Show, Jason Hall).

The game received two expansion packs, Cryptic Passage (by Sunstorm Interactive) and Plasma Pak, as well as a sequel in Blood II: The Chosen, which didn’t do so well.

You can pick up Blood here if you want to play a classic. Otherwise you can also try One Unit: Whole Blood, which contains Blood, Cryptic Passage, and Plasma Pak.

Current Gaming Trends: Custom Created Celebrities in The Sims 3

Recently we've seen Alice and Kev, and other characters, but something even more inspiring is the creation of real-life celebs and putting them in The Sims 3. I used to try and do this myself in The Sims 2, but it's a lot of effort, and sometimes they don't look quite the part. You can actually overdo it sometimes and make them look totally alien!

There are a few good ones, including a couple of video game characters like:

Marcus Fenix from Gears of War

and...

Duke Nukem!

Former 3D Realms Employee Finds a New Job, and Other Stuff about DNF

It seems that Tramell Isaac, former art director of 3D Realms and part of the team working on Duke Nukem Forever, has finally found a job!

He's also started posting a series called "The Wild Ride", which is all about his experience at 3D Realms.

In other news, the legal battle between 3D Realms and Take-Two has gotten dirtier, seeing as T2 claims that 3D Realms has an offshore bank account, which Scott Mi11er has denied.

Still more on DNF, apparently more in-game footage of Duke Nukem Forever has surfaced recently.

Current Gaming Trends: Gaming Diaries, Names, and the Nameless

Gaming diaries are apparently all the rage now, as Robin Burkinshaw has proved with her Sims 3 Chronicles about Alice and and Kev- two homeless sims trying to make it in a city that doesn't want them.

Alec Meer from RPS wants to start his own as well, with A Fool In Morrowind: Précis. He claims that Morrowind is better than Oblivion and that's why he's using it.

There's also
Tom Francis’ Galactic Civilizations II bible.

In other news, if you've ever wondered what to call your newborn baby or what names of the future will sound like, then look to video games, since one man recently named his child "Garrett"- after Garrett, the protagonist from the Thief series. He claims that he didn't do it on purpose and that it just kind of "happened". Yeah right. This is the same guy who is involved in all things Thief, like the Keep of Metal and Gold, The Shadow Dark Keep, and is a member of TTLG and the Dark Mod forums, among probably many others. You'll probably find upon further investigation that his pets are named Benny and Blackjack.

It seems that someone finally discovered the name of a prolific voice actor who has worked on many games, including Uncharted 1 and 2 and Assassin's Creed, as well as TV shows and Animations. His name is Nolan North, now being given the moniker, "Mr. Video Game Voiceover". Let's hope that there's more recognition for voice artists in future, as they make the game more real than just about anything sometimes, just like Stephen Russell from Thief, who has quite a cult following, or Jon St.John (Duke Nukem).

HubPages Gets Into The US Top 150 Websites

I've read lately that HubPages is now ranked #143 in the US Top Websites.

I'm stoked to be apart of HubPages- I have two profiles there. There are widgets in my sidebar on the left that show my latest, hottest, and best hubs.

Who knows- maybe one day it'll get into the top 100 or top 50, and rival other sites like Twitter and Facebook?

Tim Curry to be in Brutal Legend

Tim Curry croppedI just watched Home Alone 2: Lost in New York the other night, and one of my favourite characters in that movie is the one played by Tim Curry, The Plaza Hotel concierge, Mr. Hector.

Recently it's been said that Tim Curry will take over the role of Lord Doviculus, which previously belonged to Dio, in Brutal Legend. The reason being because of his role as the Lord of Darkness in the film, Legend.

This won't be the first video game that Tim Curry has had something to do with though.

He's had roles in:

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned
Through the Eyes of the Monster
Toonstruck
Stratos in Sacrifice
Scooby Doo! Night of 100 Frights
Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Nicktoons Unite!
Nicktoons: Attack of the Toybots
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

Tim Curry was also a musician thirty something years ago, releasing three albums. So, if you thought it was odd to have Tim Curry in the game-well, it is, but not that far-fetched of an idea.

It seems as though 2004 was definitely the year of Riddick, and June was the month. The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury was the third Riddick title released in June, 2004.
Dark Fury is an animated short film, and the sequel to The Chronicles of Riddick.

It features the voice of Vin Diesel as Richard B. Riddick, and the title is crucial in the plot development of Jack, otherwise known as Kyra, whom Riddick rescued in Pitch Black and met again in The Chronicles of Riddick.
