Modern Warfare 2 Soundtrack Available Now

Video game soundtracks are usually released before or just about the same time the game which features the OST releases. Modern Warfare 2 is different, seeing as the OST for this game, which was released last November, was only released this month – this week in fact.

The score is by Hans Zimmer, and features 17 tracks from the game, which in total clocks in at just under an hour’s play length. It retails for $7.99 at Amazon, saving you over $8 if you bought all the songs individually, and also $2 cheaper than you’d find it on iTunes.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Official Reveal, Trailer

The future of Infinity Ward is shaky, what with all the legal actions, lawsuits, and what not flying around, with some analysts saying the studio will be closed this year. This obviously must impact the future of Modern Warfare 3. Great going Activision.

Another worst kept secret in the world right now. Many people thought that this latest offering from Treyarch, the “B team”, would be called Call of Duty: Vietnam, even until just a few days ago. But it turns out after the official unveiling just recently, that Call of Duty: Black Ops is the name of the game – just like some other rumours suggested.

And possible locations that will be present in the game have also been revealed, with some sources saying Cuba, South America, the Arctic, Iran, and the jungles of Vietnam will be on display for players to run around in. The story has been said to feature black ops missions from WW II right through to present day. This will be the first Treyarch-developed CoD title to venture outside of WW II. Their last effort was World at War in 2008.

An official website has been set up for the game, with a release date set for 9 November 2010 – a year after Modern Warfare 2.

Retailer GAME says the following:

"Call of Duty Black Ops is the next instalment in the thrilling Call of Duty franchise. Packing an amazing singleplayer story that will see you fight across the globe in locations such as Cuba, Vietnam and the Arctic."

"Now you will witness the birth of the Elite Special Forces and take part in off-the-record missions using unconventional weaponry to get the job done!"

The game also has preorder pages at Amazon, for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions of the game.

Even a trailer for the game has been released, with some websites dissecting it to squeeze more information out of it.

They say that the game will be one big flashback, with the person telling the tale being tortured. The trailer shows snowy environments [the Arctic, or Siberia perhaps?], UH-1A Huey helicopters [made famous in the Vietnam War], some guns like a silenced Steyr Aug, a parachuting mission similar to games in the Medal of Honor series, and the most interesting of all: an SR71 Blackbird with the pilot in space suit, flying in sub-orbit.

Video Games Coming out This Week [May 02-08, 2010]: Modern Warfare 2: Stimulus Package, Iron Man 2

AAA’s Targets of the Week: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Stimulus Package, Iron Man 2

This week sees the release of the Stimulus Package for Modern Warfare 2. May 4, the DLC pack will be available off of Steam for the PC, and PS3 user can also get it this week. Xbox 360 gamers go to play it a month ago or more. That should get rid of your mapathy.

The multi-platform release for this week is Iron Man 2 – the game based on the movie, which got less than stellar reviews so far. The game is probably headed in the same direction.

Ghost Sighting: Even UN Peacekeepers play Modern Warfare 2

I saw this is in the local Weekend Argus, and couldn’t help but smile. For anyone whose ever played Modern Warfare 2, you must know who this reminds you of:

This picture above is of a UN peacekeeper in Darfur, Sudan [check the caption]. I scanned it earlier and posted it here for you to see. Obviously the guy is imitating Ghost from Modern Warfare 2. Check the skull on the balaclava, and he even has the sunglasses too. And the gloves.

It’s pretty impressive, apart from the helmet, seeing as Ghost doesn’t wear one [and probably should], but you’re right if you’re thinking that a peacekeeper shouldn't really be in this sort of garb. If you look closely he’s also got his iPod hooked up

Whether he’s actually played the game, or just saw the character, I don’t know, but it was a great find to see this.

New Medal of Honor Screenshots [Screens]

Some people don’t like commentary to go with photos, claiming that it bores readers to death. But I love it!

Besides, I’ve read that it’s not good to have just pictures in a post, and that should at least have a few lines of text, as it’s better for SEO or search engine optimisation and all that stuff that I don’t understand too well.

Anyway, these are the new Medal of Honor screenshots released the other day. Let’s see what we have: there are two guys who I swear are undercover, because they look Middle Eastern, but are using US army issue gear and weapons – they feature in quite a few of the screenshots released for the game so far; we have some nice views of the deserts and rocky hills and mountains; some city streets and slums; the ATV or 4-wheeler which also features in Bad Company 2, but didn’t appear in Modern Warfare 2 (HA!); a helicopter – let’s hope you can fly it or at least shoot out of it; and some urban close quarters combat.

Onto related news: I read that a new trailer for Medal of Honor will be arriving on Friday. I’ve also gotten info from the main website that the game’s write-up and trailers and such are available on Xbox Live Marketplace.

Video Game Deals at Amazon: Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition, Demigod Collector’s Edition

There’s some good deals on Amazon just lately, and I noticed that at least a couple of these are special editions of some popular games. There’s a deal on the Xbox 360 Prestige Edition of Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2, where you can save $12. Okay, so it’s still a lot to pay, but remember there was a time when you couldn’t even get the Prestige Edition on Amazon because it has sold out on at least one console.

Then there’s Demigod Collector’s Edition where you get about 25% off with $10 discount. Other games that caught my eye that have deals on them at the moment are Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince and Divinity II: Ego Draconis for both the PC and Xbox 360.

Aliens vs. Predator to be a Steamworks Title

I dreaded this as soon as I read it, because remember the outcry when it came to Modern Warfare 2? The game in addition to the retail versions, will also be sold on Steam, but it doesn’t stop there. Like other Steamworks titles, the game’s achievements and saved games will all be stored online.

And just like with Modern Warfare 2, Direct2Drive, Impulse, and GamersGate, the main competitors of Steam in the digital distribution game, are not selling the game. They boycotted MW 2 mainly because of its use of Steamworks, which they claim is a further attempt to monopolize the digital download industry.

This explains why I haven’t seen it in D2D’s product line when doing searches. All that crops up is result after result on Aliens vs. Predator comics, which some may find cool, anyway.

Oh, by the way, another title by the name of Napoleon: Total War… yeah, that’s a Steamworks title too, right there.

Medal of Honor: Two Developers, Two Engines

So we’ve all known for some time that Medal of Honor will be essentially two different games. The singleplayer will be handled by EALA (EA Los Angeles), and the multiplayer will be done by DICE, the traditional Battlefield guys.

But it’s now been revealed that the two separate parts of the game will use different engines. The singleplayer will use the Unreal Engine 3, and the multiplayer will use the Frostbite engine, also used in Battlefield: Bad Company 2. You could argue that this is due to familiarity, but keep in mind that Mirror’s Edge, developed by DICE, used Unreal Engine 3.

Okay, so some say it stole the idea of taking place in the Middle East from Modern Warfare, but this may be the game that Modern Warfare 2 should have been. It’s either this, or Bad Company 2. One of them has to be. Unless the new Call of Duty makes its presence known this year, and it probably will, as history dictates.

The Sims 3 was the Top Selling PC Game of Last Year

Modern Warfare 2 may have racked up a lot of achievements, and been the all round best selling game of 2009, but as for the PC, it was something a little less violent.

EA says that The Sims 3 was the best selling PC game, retail wise, of 2009, but of course it had about five months more to do it in. The Sims 3 was released in June last year, while MW2 was in November. If it had been different, well, it might have been different.

EA even goes on to claim that The Sims 3 is one of the best selling PC games ever, and that the expansion, World Adventures, is one of the best selling expansions of 2009. And The Sims 3 is also part of another achievement: the sixth year that a Sims title has been a top best selling game. I guess that some of the other years would have been 2000 and 2004 when the prequels were released, respectively.

A lot of blowing-your-own-horn there.

And here I was thinking that nobody really played the game anymore. I do from time to time.

From Russia With Love: New Metro 2033 Screenshots

I couldn’t resist that headline. Yes, these are new shots of the game to rival STALKER, Metro 2033. It just looks so awesome to me. The character detail is very good. In fact I thought I saw Captain Price from Modern Warfare 2 in there somewhere. It does kind of remind me of that game somehow, not to mention a little STALKER, too.

Anyhow, I like doing the photo album thing just for show, but I’ve put the separate thumbnails here too, for those with no appreciation for art. Your welcome.

NAG Magazine January 2010 Issue on the way, Delayed in Cape Town

January will mark 11 years that I’ve been buying NAG magazine.
Unfortunately for those of us in Cape Town (including me), if you aren’t a subscriber, you’ll only be able to get the issue on the 7th of January, instead of the 24th of December like everyone else. That’s a whole 2 weeks delay! Damn!
So, if you were planning on wrapping it up for Christmas, guess you’ll have one less present on the morning, which has approached so fast. It’s on Friday – can you believe it?

“Update: Due to some unforeseen delays with the distribution of the DVD, the January issue will only be on shelves in Cape Town on the 7th of January. Subscribers will not be affected.”

It’s too bad, because this issue looks like it’s going to be a good one. Features include a Dead Space 2 interview, and reviews of all of 2009’s big hits: Modern Warfare 2, Assassin’s Creed II, Dragon Age: Origins, and Left 4 Dead 2!
The DVD will contain demos of Avatar and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, as well as the usual truckload of videos and trailers and lots of other stuff.

Video Game Deals at Amazon: Modern Warfare 2 for PS3 and Xbox 360

Modern Warfare 2 was one the top selling game of November, and it looks like it’s still at the top of the list. I’ve seen Modern Warfare 2’s price on console drop by a bit lately – by over $12 on PS3. The price for this version is the same as the Xbox 360 one, when you buy it brand new. The used price is a little lower for both. Note that this is the standard edition.

Aliens vs. Predator Release Date, Box Art, Collector’s Editions

It’s been confirmed that the latest Aliens vs. Predator title in the famed series will be released on February 19, 2010, in Europe.

In addition to this the box art has been unveiled for the game, and like Modern Warfare 2, the game comes in three different editions: Standard, Survivor, and Hunter. The good news is that these special editions are for all platforms- PC, PS3, and 360.

What’s in these editions:

The Survivor Edition: comes in a steel case and features a code for downloadable multiplayer maps.

The Hunter Edition: everything the Survivor Edition has, as well as a posable facehugger model, a Weyland Yutani sleeve badge and a 3D lenticular postcard.

The box art is quite good – very green as D’toid mentioned, keeping with the theme of the game which in my experience features a lot of green. Green night vision, green acid blood from the Aliens, and bright green blood from the Predators.

In related news, the game was banned in Australia.

New Medal of Honor Title Coming Next Year

Yes, we all new this was happening. The rumours have been around for about a year now. But now it’s been officially unveiled by EA, and there are some more details to go on.

Okay, so it’s true that the series is finally leaving World War II, and moving in to new, or rather, modern territory. The title is just being called Medal of Honor - there doesn’t seem to be any subtitle or anything, seeing as this will be a reboot of the series. So don’t confuse it with the original Medal of Honor, released ten years ago, in 1999. And yes, it is Honor without the “u”, since it’s American.

Medal of Honor will take place in Afghanistan, no doubt during the Second Gulf War which has been going on for the last several years, and which the recently released Modern Warfare 2 only touched upon briefly in the beginning of the singleplayer campaign. In the game you will take on the role of a Tier One Operator, one of the most elite Special Ops units there is, ordered around directly by the NCA (National Command Authority, AKA Mr President, and the Secretary of Defence. EALA says they are working alongside these troops to create a realistic, believable gaming experience.

From the Official Press Release:

“When we first set out to reinvent Medal of Honor, we wanted to stay true to its roots of authenticity and respect for the soldier but bring it into today’s war. The Tier 1 Operator is the most disciplined, deliberate and prepared warrior on the battlefield. He is a living, breathing, precision instrument of war.” said Greg Goodrich, Executive Producer, Medal of Honor. “We are honored to have the rare opportunity to work closely with these men to create a game that shares their experience.”

“EA has always been an advocate for telling the soldiers’ story. The new Medal of Honor follows that tradition. We felt it was important to tell the story of today’s war and today’s elite soldiers via today’s most relevant medium – videogames,” said Sean Decker, VP and General Manager of EALA. “We are so proud to bring together two powerhouse development teams to make this game a reality; EA Los Angeles and EA DICE. Medal of Honor promises to be an unforgettable entry in the modern shooter genre.”

The singleplayer is being developed by EA Los Angeles, and the multiplayer is being taken care of by DICE, the Battlefield guys. So, this should be one hell of a game, hopefully. Medal of Honor has always been known for its great SP campaigns, well perhaps not in the last few years, and it seems there will be no tacked on multiplayer in this one. Having separate developers on a game is nothing new, but of this calibre is quite impressive.

Medal of Honor will be released in 2010 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Far Cry Movie in the US on DVD

It's all been about Uwe Boll this week, it seems. Well, I was just talking about Far Cry 3, and now another Far Cry news piece is here!

Far Cry , released last year in Germany, has now crossed the pond to the US. It's not showing in theatres however, as it's going straight to DVD, with no supper!

The movie was directed and produced by the infamous Uwe Boll, and no surprise, it got sub-par reviews. It's supposedly based on the first game, Far Cry. Some of Boll's films at least have some recognizable names, but not this one, seeing as I don't really see any big names on there that are well-known, except...oh god, those d1ckeads from ScrewAttack, Craig and the other guy, Thomas. And Craig Fairbrass, who voiced Ghost in Modern Warfare 2.

New Medal of Monor: Modern Combat Possibly Coming Next Year

Yes, everyone knows that a new MoH game is in development. We’ve all heard the rumours that have been going around for the past year or so, and I’ve even covered it a few times on the blog.

So, in case you need a bit of catching up to do, here’s the gist of it all. There’s a new Medal of Honor game in development, which may take place in modern times, or in the present, in another way to put it, instead of WW II, like about 100% of MoH titles before it.

Men of Valor was a title by the same people who did Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, 2015 Inc., and it took place in Vietnam, but that’s a different story.

And it’s been somewhat confirmed that there is a new title, and that it isn’t a rumour, by EA. And this title will follow in the footsteps of the Call of Duty series, which branched off into Modern Warfare and the recently released Modern Warfare 2. The new title will be called Medal of Honor: Modern Combat, according to reports that claim that this name has been trademarked, and it's rumoured to come out by the end of Q1 2010, in February or March, allegedly, according to MCVUK.

I doubt with almost zero marketing to speak of except these rumours that it will be that soon, but perhaps we will see more of it next year, hopefully.

The name's a bit unoriginal, for sure, and people are crying out that EA is copying Infinity Ward, but let’s not forget that the Medal of Honor series came first, years before Call of Duty entered the now overdone World War II FPS genre. So perhaps they’re even now.

In fact, some people who formed Infinity Ward worked at 2015 Inc., one of the MoH developers.

Nick Earl of EA had the following things to say about the new title in a leaked memo picked up by Kotaku:

All the commenters on this story out there have started a little game, going from news article to news article putting in their thoughts on what the game should be called.

GameStop Breaks the Rules…Again, Releases Games Early

GameStop broke the street release date for Modern Warfare 2 last week, without permission from evil publisher Activision. In defence of their actions, it was said that the top brass of GameStop gave the go-ahead and it was released early.

Now it seems they’ve done the same thing with Assassin’s Creed II and Left 4 Dead 2 this week. The release dates for these two games were broken too. So, gamers probably aren’t complaining. They can get the game early. But publishers, developers, and other retailers are likely less than impressed, or pleased.

Then again, people hate Activision and Bobby Kotick as of late anyway, and the company made loads off of Modern Warfare 2, and not to mention a big fat truckload of pocket money for “Psykotick”.

GameStop always seeks to get the competitive edge over other retailers, at perhaps at any cost. Whether it’s releasing games earlier than the set release date, or letting GameStop employees play new games before selling them, so they’re classed as second hand; stuff that’s frowned upon by others. And second hand goods are what keep the retail chain going, according to reports.

To their credit, GameStop has come around to the fact that digital distribution is the way of the future, after analysts said that the company was doomed to shut down if it didn’t adapt. It’s now broadening its online capabilities as of this year.

Now people are talking about what devs can do to stop GameStop from ruining their plans as far as
release dates are concerned. It seems as though lately, even if a game is sold by a retailer earlier than planned, games like Left 4 Dead 2 are locked, so they can’t be played before that date. But can this actually stop GameStop and other retailers from doing this? Maybe the issue will be taken to court, and perhaps there will be some sort of penalty for committing the act, or even made illegal.

Oh, by the way, payback is a b1tch: a GameStop was robbed the other day, and 100 copies of Modern Warfare 2 were nabbed.

It seems there is justice in this world after all.

I got Borderlands Today, Fastest Selling IP of 2009

Disappointed with Modern Warfare 2's short campaign, I went out and got Borderlands today. From what I've seen in trailers and on The Verge, the game does look good, even if it has that annoying little robot, Claptrap, in it.

On The Verge recently, the headline of one of the news pieces covered claimed that Borderlands is the fastest selling game of this year. A bit of an omission there, as Gearbox has declared Borderlands the fastest selling original IP of 2009. The fastest selling game overall this year would be Modern Warfare 2, thank you.
