Classic Game Collecting: December Edition

C2moCtrgrimage

The other day I was in Tygervalley Shopping Centre once again, on a mission to get a replacement debit card, and to deal with this Rica registration business before the cut-off date, which is the end of this month.

After all that was done, I had some time to browse through some of local stores which stock video games. So it was off to Game, CNA, and then eventually Musica.

So there I was at Musica, which is probably one of my favourite places to look for classic games that I so love doing – despite the apparent fact that the PC games selection keeps getting smaller each year. It was here that I came across some good compilations as well as a real rarity too.

One of these was Tomb Raider: The Greatest Raids, which is a compilation consisting of the first four TR games in the original series. Anybody who has played any of these knows that Tomb Raider I and II are the best. This was priced at R199.

Then another compilation was Prince of Persia Trilogy, which had three PoP titles, Sands of Time, Forgotten Sands, and The Warrior Within. This was significantly cheaper than the Tomb Raider anthology previously mentioned – priced at R59.

But the greatest find was seeing this game: Commandos 2. That’s right, it’s been a good 9 years since its release, and yet there it was, Commandos 2: Men Of Courage. For R59, I was almost tempted to buy it, but I all ready have the game as it is, and I’m not sure it would even run on my system. I’ve had some bad luck with some classics that I’ve bought in the past.

It’s rare to see games that old in stores anyway, unless you’re talking about Deus Ex or something. I rarely come across anything older than 10 years (released in 2000).

Commandos 4 Possibly Under Development [Rumblings]

commandosgroup Last year there were rumours  started about another Commandos game possibly being in development, but these rumours were later denied by Pyro Studios, the developers of the series, which saw three great RTS type games enter the market, along with one FPS spin-off which didn’t turn out so well.

But even though Pyro said the company wasn’t currently working on a game at the time, didn’t mean that there weren’t plans for the future.

Now it seems that is the case, as these rumours have resurfaced, as a LinkedIn profile of a former Pyro Studios lead designer, Marcos Domenech, was discovered, and lists Commandos 4 as a game he has worked on. He is currently working on Brink with Splash Damage.

There’s also another LinkedIn profile belonging to José Ramón Díaz Martín, which also states he worked on the game, and still is.

Obviously there’s no official confirmation, and the profile will either be edited or taken down soon, which usually says a lot on its own. On a side note, I’d be totally stoked to play another Commandos game. It’s been too long. Maybe I’ll get one of the other three out and play.

Commandos not MIA Afterall- New Title Coming

I was a big fan of the Commandos series, particularly Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty, and Commandos 2: Men of Courage. Commandos 3 was bloody hard as I remember. The only Commandos title I haven't touched is Strike Force, which by many accounts was rubbish anyway, so I'm glad I didn't. Not just fans, and critics, but even the developers say that Strike Force was a "mistake".

I guess shifting from strategy to FPS doesn't always work as well as you hope.

Anyway, Pyro Studios, a name I haven't heard for a long time, says that a new Commandos title will be coming sometime in the future, and that it will restore our good faith in the WW II strategy genre, and the Commandos series too.

Update: Well, it turns out that the site that started this rumour, gamer.nl, was fibbing a little.

Pyro Studios has denied any rumours about another official Commandos game. Apparently at GamesCom, their comments about another game in the series were taken out of context: they claim that there may be a game in the future, but nothing concrete for now- certainly nothing in development or anything.

This is what Pyro had to say: "We always had in mind to bring back to life the Commandos series; this isn't something new, but nowadays there's nothing official or decided and everything is still a wish, nothing else."
