Theory: Blood may have had more Influence than you Thought

      blood256px-Systemshock2box250px-Nocturnegamecover

These three seemingly very different games might have more in common than once thought

To many, Duke Nukem 3D was the most popular build engine game ever made, even though there were several others out there from the mid to late 90’s. Blood was one of these build engine cousins of the Duke, and for the most part probably wasn’t played by as many people. It did establish what one would refer to as a cult following though.

I was one of those types who only got around to dabbling in the rest of the build “big four” years after they were released. Not that it wasn’t fun playing catch-up. I love the era of sprites in games from the 90’s, when it was then cutting-edge technology, or at least dated but still awesome towards the later half of the decade.

But I was playing through Blood again recently, a couple of years since my first playthrough, and I came to some rather shocking conclusions. Blood may have been more influential on later games than even I thought.

Two games come to mind when I play through the game. First off, there’s another forgotten title from that decade named Nocturne. I’ve played both, and I see some mighty large similarities between the two. In both, you have a sinister protagonist clad in a trench coat and hat, armed to the teeth, who hunts demons, zombies, and the like. Let’s also not forget the train level (third mission of the first episode) in Blood, and how a similar mission took place in Nocturne (first section of the second chapter).

Both games at one point also featured delving deep into crypts and the underground as well, and both took place in Western themed universes, at about the same time (Blood’s 1928 versus Nocturne’s 1928 – 1935).

The second game I think of when I play Blood is System Shock II. Granted, the two don’t have a lot in common. Blood is a bare bones, all out FPS, while System Shock II is a classic hybrid title, featuring FPS and RPG gameplay. But one level in Blood certainly did remind me SS2, which came out more than two years later – and that was the “inside the body” level. You remember in System Shock II you had the creepy level called “Body of the Many”, which took place in a disgusting setting which looked like the stomach or digestive tract of a huge creature?

Blood did that. Blood had a level near the end of the fourth episode, called “In The Flesh”, which also saw Caleb enter inside what looked to be the same sort of environment. There were also bodies of water, except not toxic like in SS2, as well as teeth, but not as lethal as SS2, but not any less scary.

Yeah, Blood may well have taken inspiration from other games and even movies, but I think that in Blood’s case, it possibly inspired at least the two above-mentioned games too. I mean when you think back, Blood was one of the first games to have alternate fire modes with weapons, much like Marathon and Dark Forces before it.

Not many people would have played games like Nocturne or even Blood, and so probably won’t care much about all this, but still… I guess the point is that there’s always a game that did it first before it became cool and people gushed about it.

Good Old Games, or GOG.com, Gets new Classics, Blood Flowing Soon

gog Good Old Games recently added Atari classics, Outcast and Master of Orion 1 & 2 to their catalogue. They’re all available for $5.99 each.

But what caught my eye more than those two was that Blood might be debuting on the site soon. Blood is one of the big four build engine games from the 90’s. The others were of course Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Redneck Rampage.

Blood, in my opinion, is the 2nd best build game ever. Duke Nukem 3D is first, with RR third, and SW last. There were of course other build games, some of which I’ve played, but I digress.

blood_000 Blood is a cult classic, which I still have on my PC and play from time to time. The game was followed by a less successful sequel, and for a long time people campaigned for the release of the Blood source code, said to be held by Atari. Instead people have had to resort to making Blood mods for other games like Quake or Doom, namely Transfusion and ZDoom, using source ports for those games.

By the way, there’s a list on the website where you can vote for a game that you’d like to see added to the list of games all ready on the site. The last time I checked, System Shock 2 was high up among those “most wanted”.Yep, it’s still there in the lead, with Planescape: Torment in 2nd, and the original System Shock in 3rd.

Have you Heard of a mod Called Hypertension?

I have, but not a lot, I'll admit. I've often heard of ZBlood or Transfusion, projects which have tried to port Blood into the Doom and Quake engine, respectively. This one is also being created in a Doom based engine, but a highly tweaked form, called Hyper3dge, a variant of the EDGE engine derived from the Doom source code.

Well, I came across a news update on
Planet Doom recently which talked about the Hypertension mod, and about an interview that took place on Diehard Gamefan with the team working on the project. It's been revealed that this mod will be available for PC, Mac, Linux, GP2X Whiz, and oddly enough, the Sega Dreamcast (which is why Diehard Gamefan became interested in the first place, being fans of the console, as are certain members of the team).

Since I am playing the original Blood right as we speak, I was naturally interested and decided to check it out.

It's a lot of reading to wade through, but there are some good bits, and I can't help but have the feeling that this isn't just your average mod. There will be stuff brought back from Blood, as well as the somewhat disappointing sequel, Blood II: The Chosen, as well as all new stuff too. So instead of just a straight port, there will be a fresh experience, created by having two playable characters (one of them being Caleb, our favourite sadistic maniac from the original), as well as a new story, bridging the original Blood games in an all-new take, including some new gameplay such as RPG elements.
There's also some effort going into acting, cinematics, and the soundtrack too. The team seems to like blowing their own horn(s) when it comes to what they've been able to achieve with the mod, saying that even John Carmack would be impressed.

From looking at their blog, the mod seems to have been in development since last year, and all of a sudden there's this renewed interest in it, after a few trailers were released last month and this month. Supposedly the mod has been delayed.

Blood
is an oft debated title, especially in modding circles, seeing as the source code for the game hasn't been released, even all these years later, while Shadow Warrior and especially Duke Nukem 3D have all gotten a lot of attention over the years with multiple source ports because the source codes for the game were released several years back. When you look at what has been accomplished with Duke 3D, with the HRP, Polymer, and Duke Plus, you just can't believe it's the same game. It's astounding.

Besides, I still haven't heard any mention of a third Blood game coming any time soon, so for the moment, Hypertension looks bloody good.

Classic Games Resurrected: Redneck Rampage Coming Soon

Okay, so I've bought some airtime and a data bundle. I reckon either today or tomorrow, I'll start working on building the latest in my Classic Games Resurrected series, Redneck Rampage. It should be up and finished by the end of the week, hopefully.

I got through Redneck Rampage and Suckin' Grits on Route 66, but I've yet to play Redneck Rampage Rides Again, but when I do, I'll just update the hub with the info, although I've all ready got some stuff about it on there.

I've kind of gone back to playing Blood lately, and like I said the other day, I'll soon update the Blood hub with some other stuff. I'll likely update a few of my hubs some time in the future.

Yes! I’ve Finally got Blood Running Nicely!

No, I haven’t slit my wrists, and I’m not bleeding all over the carpet. I’m talking about the game, Blood.

I started playing it last year about this time, but the framerate was horrible, and the sound was rubbish. But a return visit to the famous Build XP page and forums at Deathmask, and a bit of the old RTFS method has allowed me to get the thing running almost perfectly. I had all ready downloaded all the programs and files like NOLFB, CLI2NOP, and VDMSound etc, long ago, but just a bit of messing around with the soundcard settings and a bit of black magic, and things work all of a sudden.

The framerate is a lot faster, and the sound and MIDI music nearly flawless, although there’s that squeaking that happens while running it in DOSbox every now and again. I haven't tried running it through Windows or the command prompt yet.

Before that, I was running the game through the command prompt, and getting some horrible slow-paced gameplay, and practically no sound.

I guess soon I’ll have to update my Classis Games Resurrected: Blood article, seeing as I couldn’t get the sound working back then.

CGR Hubs Updated: Blood and Duke Nukem 3D

I got some warnings in my account on HubPages that a couple of my hubs had broken links. I checked it out, and the Blood article's ZBlood video was no longer available on YouTube, so I replaced it with another. I also saw that the Blood Pool, Monolith's web ring of Blood fansites and such is gone.

Then it was on to the Duke Nukem 3D article where I saw that another link, this time leading to Matt Saettler's website was broken. Matt Saettler, to the best of my knowledge is one of the pioneers that helped form Duke Nukem 3D ports like EDuke32 with his original EDuke.

Just a few interesting tidbits I thought. I'm not going to rush about it and claim that the websites are completely gone, but they are down, if anyone cares.

Apocalypse Then: Blood

Developer: Monolith Productions
Publisher: GT Interactive (Atari)
Engine: Build
Platforms: MS-DOS
Release dates: June 20, 1997
Genres: First Person Shooter, Western

On this day in gaming, in 1997, Blood was released.

Blood is an FPS game based on the build engine used in Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior by 3D Realms. Originally it was going to be an Apogee Software game under the name of "Horror 3D", but was sold to Monolith who developed and released it, making it a cult classic, particularly noted for its violence.

The player takes the role of Caleb, an undead gunslinger out for revenge against the Cabal and its leader, Tchernobog (voiced by Monolith CEO and host of the Jace Hall Show, Jason Hall).

The game received two expansion packs, Cryptic Passage (by Sunstorm Interactive) and Plasma Pak, as well as a sequel in Blood II: The Chosen, which didn’t do so well.

You can pick up Blood here if you want to play a classic. Otherwise you can also try One Unit: Whole Blood, which contains Blood, Cryptic Passage, and Plasma Pak.

For more, check out Classic Games Resurrected: Blood.

Where has all the music gone?

I originally sent this as an e-mail to NAG magazine recently.

I’ve been playing through all the Doom games lately along with the Doomsday sourceport that makes playing them on XP a cinch.

While I was doing this, even though some are catchy, I laughed at the MIDI songs blasting out of my speakers, but after a while I realized something.

Games sure have become quieter, haven’t they?

Most developers go for atmospheric sound and music, maybe with the occasional flare up of dramatic music when the mood strikes, but beyond that they are a lot quieter. Gone are the days of the 1990s when you had a soundtrack playing all throughout the level. True, it did get irritating after a while, but look at how Sonic Clang pulled it off with their songs that accompanied the Classic Doom mod for Doom 3.

Doom 3 itself didn’t even have a soundtrack apart from the main menu music, and probably the last games that did were Quake 2 and Quake 3. Quake 2 still has one of the best OSTs ever, IMO.

Some people have even taken to remaking the old songs from Blood, Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, because they like to relive the good old days.

Wouldn’t it be great if more games had a proper dark, broody soundtrack with guitars and drums, and not this dramatic techno or classical stuff playing? Think of how it would sound nowadays compared to the original Doom games.

Here are a couple of sites where you can find more modern mp3 versions of old game OSTs.

Classic Games Resurrected

November last year, I started a series on HubPages where I have two profiles. Yesterday I finished my article on Thief: The Dark Project.

The series is dedicated to looking at classic games- what they were like to play vanilla style, and what they are like now with all the mods and other improvements available off of the net.

There are pictures, vids as well as lots of links to resources. Hopefully with this project, I can get more people interested in the classic games as well as the PC instead of consoles, that seem to be taking over.

I'd buy a console but I don't have a lot of caps to splash around.

Here's the series of Classic Games Resurrected.

As you can see, there's Blood, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Rise of the Triad, Shadow Warrior, System Shock 2 and Thief: The Dark Project. There should be others coming during the year, so check back regularly.
