400th Episode of The Verge, The Verge Turns 3

If you haven’t heard of or seen The Verge before, it’s a show about video gaming on DSTV, channel 123 (Vuzu). It’s been running for nearly the past 3 years, since late 2008. Wednesday the 23rd of November, 2011 marks the 400th episode of this show.

Yes, 400 episodes of news; trailers; reviews; looking at Pippa and her various “interesting” hairstyles; changing timeslots; putting up with Mo (and more recently Thomas), and even the odd bit of the old mockery from Lala – odd coming from a show whose target audience happens to be gamers.

The 400th episode will have reviews on Rage, Battlefield 3, and will feature Pippa’s top 5 iPhone games.
December 1st marks the show’s 3rd birthday – but there likely won’t be an episode of either The Verge or PlayR on that night, seeing as Dec 1 is a Thursday, and neither show airs any episodes on a Thursday.

AAA: Merry Christmas!

Christmas Eve

Well, the year’s nearly through. It’s Christmas Eve, and I’ve spent some time with the family, and we had dinner just a few hours ago and we’ve been doing the usual stuff.

I usually take Fridays off, and that applies tomorrow as well. I won’t be doing any blogging or writing of articles or any writing of any sort hopefully, and whether or not I do any on the weekend will remain to be seen.

I’m taking a break, and after the weekend and particularly in the new year, I suppose I’ll be back to posting news, both local and international, stuff about movies, music and especially gaming, and the usual random magic, or nonsense, depending on how you see it. And I hope to further extend my presence on the web with more blogs and websites, and so on, some time.

So, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

P.S. I’ve recently added some new widgets to the blog. The games I’m currently playing, and the Christmas banner. The poll is still running as well, this time with a selection of games to choose from, indicating your favourite game you’ve played this year.

Went Christmas Shopping, Got a Good Gaming Deal

Well, the Christmas tree has been put up, and of course now it’s all about the last few weeks before Christmas…and that means Christmas shopping.

I’ve been going through a lot of brochures lately looking for some good local game deals, and I did see a few which interested me.

So, off I went to the local mall, Tygervalley, and I was looking at some classic games. A lot of them have are available at between R49,99 and R99,99, and not just “old” games - games like BioShock, Mirror’s Edge, Mass Effect, Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil 4, good games that were released in the last two or three years.

I was looking at some of the good old games and I was tempted to just take them all (the mall, get it?) but I was looking for some games in particular; ones I hadn’t played before. I came across a good deal in Operation Flashpoint. It’s the full game, plus the two addons, Cold War Crisis and Resistance. A 3-in-1 deal for R49,99. I played the demos of these games years ago, but I haven’t yet played the full versions of these games after all this time. After being kind of disappointed with Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, I picked this up and bought it. I’ve read that the original is better than OFDR.

I still think that it was an odd choice, but I mean, at R50, if it doesn’t turn out to be so good, it’s no real loss to me.

I was also looking for a copy of Thief: The Dark Project, seeing as my disc isn’t working anymore, and I also want to get a hold of Deus Ex, ever since I saw it on Destructoid’s list of Top 50 games of the decade.

You know, I disagree with most of that list, but that’s life, huh?

I actually want to go back there with my brother or even on my own again, just to see if I missed anything, and perhaps pick something else up.

The Verge Turns One Today

World Aids Day

verge

Yes, today is not only the 1st day of December, as well as World Aids day, but if you were watching The Verge last night, and happened to listen to Pippa, instead of ogling her and SMSing flirty messages, you would have heard her tell everyone that December 1st is the first anniversary of The Verge. The show originally started this time last year on what was Channel O, according to Pippa.

If you haven’t watched The Verge, it’s a local (South African) TV series about gaming, and related stuff, hosted by Pippa, and sometimes Mo. It appears live on Channel 123 (Vuzu), on DSTV at 21:30, with repeats the following morning and afternoon.

So, tonight is the 1 Year Anniversary show, and Pip remained tight-lipped about what would be showing tonight, so we’ll just have to see.

Happy Birthday to The Verge!

New Hub Published: On The Verge

I published a new hub recently, called On The Verge:a Local TV Show about Video Gaming.

After publishing, before I could go back and edit the article, a page came up from HubPages telling me that HP was down for scheduled upgrades. So, the article does look a bit (a lot) messed up in terms of layout. I'll have this fixed as soon as HP is back up again, don't worry. But, the article itself is there, so you can still read it, I think. If you get the same message about HP being down, then try again later.

As you can probably tell by the title, the article is about The Verge, the gaming show on Vuzu, channel 123 on DSTV.

Current Gaming Trends: Gaming Diaries, Names, and the Nameless

Gaming diaries are apparently all the rage now, as Robin Burkinshaw has proved with her Sims 3 Chronicles about Alice and and Kev- two homeless sims trying to make it in a city that doesn't want them.

Alec Meer from RPS wants to start his own as well, with A Fool In Morrowind: Précis. He claims that Morrowind is better than Oblivion and that's why he's using it.

There's also
Tom Francis’ Galactic Civilizations II bible.

In other news, if you've ever wondered what to call your newborn baby or what names of the future will sound like, then look to video games, since one man recently named his child "Garrett"- after Garrett, the protagonist from the Thief series. He claims that he didn't do it on purpose and that it just kind of "happened". Yeah right. This is the same guy who is involved in all things Thief, like the Keep of Metal and Gold, The Shadow Dark Keep, and is a member of TTLG and the Dark Mod forums, among probably many others. You'll probably find upon further investigation that his pets are named Benny and Blackjack.

It seems that someone finally discovered the name of a prolific voice actor who has worked on many games, including Uncharted 1 and 2 and Assassin's Creed, as well as TV shows and Animations. His name is Nolan North, now being given the moniker, "Mr. Video Game Voiceover". Let's hope that there's more recognition for voice artists in future, as they make the game more real than just about anything sometimes, just like Stephen Russell from Thief, who has quite a cult following, or Jon St.John (Duke Nukem).

On This Day: Duke Nukem 3D

On this day, January 29, back in 1996, Duke Nukem 3D was unleashed on the world.

Duke Nukem 3D was the third title in the main series of Duke Nukem games, preceded by Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem II.

Duke Nukem 3D was featured in many compilations and was one of the most ported games in history, arriving on many different consoles. It also received several expansions, an atomic edition upgrade with a new episode, and massive level packs. Other Duke games include Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project and the elusive direct sequel, Duke Nukem Forever.

The first time I ever got my hands on it was back in 1996 towards the end of the year when my friend was given it as a reward for a good school report (he was a bit of a dunce). For the next three years, I played it to death.

It is still very much alive to this day, with many fan sites and communities still active across the net, and modding teams dedicated to developing new and improved features like source ports, high resolution packs, and fan mixes of the iconic soundtrack, especially the theme song, Grabbag.

I’ve recently written an article on Duke Nukem 3D under my Classic Games Resurrected series if you haven’t had a look yet. There are plenty of links to resources that will see you digging out your copy or perhaps buying it, and playing it again in awe.

Happy thirteenth, Duke!

Other notable games that were released this month in gaming history:

Ken's Labyrinth

January 1, 1993

Alien Trilogy

January 1, 1996

Diablo

January 2, 1997

The Atomic Arcade

Hey, this is Apocalypso, and welcome to the Atomic Arcade!

I debated whether I should actually have a blog for a long time. I write on other sites and I even dabble in a bit of fiction, but in the end, I decided to just go and DO IT. The world isn't going to last forever!

So then, this is admittedly my first blog, and I hope to cover a few topics. I'm a fan of gaming as you can tell- old games and new, and I'll likely be trying my hardest to post about what's going on with new games, developers, things I come across on the net while surfing and maybe just some other random madness.

As far as other interests go, I like any form of media, like music, movies, TV etc.

So, go easy on me for now, while I get things sorted, and thanks for stopping by to view the mushroom cloud blossoming!

Beautiful, isn't it?
