Now Playing: Left 4 Dead

L4D The other day I was digging through my collection of games. I keep a list of of my games on my HD, and I was particularly interested in playing through some of the titles I hadn’t finished – or even installed.

Why I did this initially was because I kept reading about a website online called Backloggery, where you can list all the games you have, how many you’ve finished, and how many you haven’t. The only thing is that the site isn’t accepting any new registrations for now.

So I was forced to make one of my own. So I’m going through all of these titles, and I came across a few gems which I was surprised I hadn’t even played. One of these was Left 4 Dead. It was released in 2008. I bought it nearly two years ago, and I decided I would play it to see what all the fuss had been about for nearly the past two years.

l4d_airport04_terminal0004

The messages on the wall are a nice touch. Reminds me of Digg.

It’s really designed to be a multiplayer game, but it’s fun enough playing on your own with a bunch of bots, despite the AI being a bit suspect most of the time. It’s not a bad game. Kind of hard even on the easier difficulty levels, but I’m getting the hang on it. The last standoff levels are insane. Having to last minutes which seem like hours fighting off endless hordes.

UPDATE: Finished most of the levels, apart from the last one on the first campaign, No Mercy. where you need to be rescued by a helicopter on a rooftop. Throw in waves of zombies, and more Tanks than you can handle and it’s anything but a picnic while admiring the view. Keep getting killed by the last Tank, trying to board the chopper.

Conspiracy Theory: Valve Doesn’t do Threequels

How long have we all been waiting for a continuation in the Half-Life story. It’s been more than three years since Half-Life 2: Episode 2 came out. It was first shown at E3 in 2007. And we all played it towards the end of that year, when it came out in November – which is customary with Valve titles.

Episode 1 came out two years after Half-Life 2, in 2006. The entire point of episodic content was to see that new content was released periodically and within a few months of each release. But after seeing how Valve has handled it, I maintain that episodic content is a failed idea – as far as big titles with high production values, such as the Half-Life series, are involved.

Anyway, everyone knows that everyone likes a good conspiracy theory. And there have probably been many suggestions as to why Episode 3 isn’t out yet. The last I read anything of it must have been last year.

Well, something struck me as I lay in bed one night, thinking on the subject, as one does. And I came up with an idea. Something that might well explain why we haven’t got Episode 3, or Half-Life 3.

It has to do with Valve’s games; the number of Valve games. Let me explain:

Half-LifeValve’s first ever game was the epic, revolutionary sci-fi FPS, Half-Life. It came out in late 1998, and nowadays is considered one of the greatest PC games of all time. Half-Life went on to spawn two expansions or addons, developed by Gearbox Software, in Opposing Force, and Blue Shift. Decay doesn’t count as it was for the PS2 version only.

Counter-Strike SourceThe next think to come along was Counter-Strike. While not strictly a Valve title to begin with – it used the Half-Life engine, and was eventually adopted by Valve, and released commercially. It became one of the greatest multiplayer-focused games of all time; still played to this day, more than ten years on. Counter-Strike had a sequel of sorts in Condition Zero. Years later Counter-Strike: Source came out, which was CS, but using the Source engine that Half-Life 2 used. It wasn’t a sequel.

DoD Another game that started out as a mod for Half-Life was Day of Defeat. It was the obligatory WWII game that was kind of similar to CS or Team Fortress, but featured class systems that were more akin to those from olden days.

DoD’s developers were eventually picked up by Valve (which is primarily made up of former modders), and Day of Defeat was adopted by the company, and later released as a standalone retail product, requiring Steam to play. Since then it has also had a remake done, using the Source engine rather than the Half-Life or Gold Source engine. This is probably the one game in Valve’s history that has yet to even receive a first sequel, let alone a second sequel (or threequel).

Half-Life 2Speaking of said game: Half-Life 2 was released in 2004, and again went on to further revolutionize the FPS genre, and storytelling in games as a whole. The game had planned addons in the form of the Episodes. Initially it was meant to be one big expansion called Aftermath, but Valve opted for the episodic content approach, and decided to release standalone episodes separately. To date, six years later, two of those episodes have been released.

Team FortressFast-forward a few years and we get to The Orange Box – one of the greatest packages ever bestowed upon gamers. This contained not only Episode 2, Episode 1, and Half-Life 2 – but also introduced Team Fortress 2 and Portal.

Team Fortress 2 obviously had a prequel released years earlier alongside Half-Life, called Team Fortress Classic. The series’ roots lay in a mod, originally for Quake. TF 2 was notoriously delayed for almost a decade, but eventually emerged with a completely different art style to that of its predecessor, which some didn’t like.

portalapevia Portal was completely different from most Valve titles, if not most FPS games ever made. You don’t have guns. You’ve just got a portal gun which aids you in traversing through several puzzles. It was inspired by a game made by some college kids, called Narbacular Drop. Portal has an upcoming sequel, named Portal 2, which should be out next year.

left4dead2 In 2008, Valve produced Left 4 Dead – a multiplayer shooter set in a zombie apocalypse. It turned out to be very popular, and a year later a sequel was released in Left 4 Dead 2. This angered the community seeing as they thought Valve had cheated them out of all the promised extra content for the original. Eventually two DLC packs made it out. Two for Left 4 Dead, and one for Left 4 Dead 2. Another one compatible with both games is due out this month. So that would make it three DLCs for L4D - but DLC isn’t a full game or a sequel anyway, and The Survival Pack which contains The Last Stand isn’t even considered canon.

So you don’t really see a three anywhere there do you? Plenty of other franchises out there have threequels, but Valve doesn’t. This doesn’t necessarily make a franchise any better just because it has more games. It can have the opposite effect (see Tomb Raider).

But like I said, it’s something that I noticed, and it looks like Valve has yet to get over the big 3 hump, even 15 years on. This curse will continue until someday, miraculously, Half-Life 2: Episode 3, or Half-Life 3, is finally released. That or else one of their other franchises produces a sequel.

Video Game Deals at Amazon: Kane& Lynch 2, Left 4 Dead GOTY

My brother is so looking forward to one of the games featured here, and that would be Kane& Lynch 2: Dog Days. He says that Bruce Willis could take either role in the movie: Kane or Lynch. Maybe they should do that, somehow…

Anyway, the yet to be released Kane& Lynch 2 is available on PC with $10 or 20% off. Other good deals include Left 4 Dead GOTY with 33% off (also $10), WWE Legends of Wrestlemania for  Xbox 360 and PS3, SAW, Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition, and some others.

These deals have been scouted on Amazon via Nowinstock.net, and accumulated over the past few days. I don’t like to do one each day unless there are many deals. I don’t bother if there are just two or three, usually, unless they’re really good games.

Valve Christmas Cards for The Silly Season This Year

I don’t know if this is a completely new idea, but it’s a good one. Valve has now added video game themed Christmas cards to its list of merchandise. These cards are based on Christmassy themes inspired by Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, and Team Fortress 2, and were drawn by artist Alexandria Neonaxis.

So, I keep hearing that Christmas cards are so uninspired nowadays, and that they don’t make them like they used to. Well, go and buy some of these then, and send them to someone who hopefully knows what Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 are, or what a video game is for that matter, so they can fully appreciate them.

It's a pity they don't seem to have any Half Life 2 ones, or even Portal. That GlaDos was funny.

It’s Your Birthday: Gabe Newell

Gabe newell
Gabe Logan Newell was born today, the 3rd of November, in 1962. He turns 47 today.

Gabe Newell is the co-founder, along with Mike Harrington, and managing director of Valve Corporation (founded in 1996), the company responsible for many great game series, like Half-Life.

Interesting facts about Gabe:

  • He dropped out of Harvard University.
  • He worked for Microsoft for thirteen years.
  • Gabe and Mike funded the development of Half-Life out of their own pockets with money they earned at Microsoft.
  • He is married to Lisa Newell and has two sons.
  • Gabe hates the PS3.
  • Gabe likes the PC.
  • Gabe’s Wikipedia article is semi-protected because of vandalism.
  • There is a video game character with the same name as his: Gabriel "Gabe" Logan from Syphon Filter.
  • Gabe describes himself as the producer on the first three releases of Microsoft Windows.
  • People often make fun of his weight.
  • Gabe can't fold his arms.
  • Gabe was briefly in second place in a Victoria’s Secret competition this year, before his entry was disqualified.
  • There’s a fake Gabe on Twitter posing as Gabe Newell. The real Gabe doesn’t have a Twitter account, yet. Kotaku fell for this hoax.
  • Valve and Gabe Newell came under fire after announcing that Left 4 Dead 2 was under development at would be released this year. Even a boycott group was started, which has since been “disbanded” by the founders, who were flown to Valve HQ to see the game in action.
  • Recently, Gabe and Erik Johnson flew to Australia to see someone’s Left 4 Dead campaign, after the guy raised $ 3000 for his flight, although Gabe actually paid the amount himself, in the end.
  • Gabe said he might consider a Half-Life movie if there is ever a script worth directing. Quentin Tarantino was once rumoured to be interested in making a Half-Life movie after claiming that even though he disliked video games as a whole, he liked Half-Life 2.
  • Gabe wouldn’t ever consider Uwe Boll to direct a Half-Life movie (thank Christ).
  • Gabe plays PC games two hours a day.
  • Gabe owns a BMW 745i.
  • Gabe’s current PC: Unspecified Core i7 (overclocked), ATI Radeon HD 4800, 42" Panasonic Elite 1080p monitor, Razer mouse, MS ergonomic keyboard.
  • Gabe has very eclectic tastes when it comes to music.
  • Gabe collects knives as a hobby. I assume he means like combat knives and such, and not those little plastic knives you get at some take-away restaurants.
  • Gabe has expressed interest in having fans fund video game development.
  • Gabe is no stranger to hiring people who work on mods, especially for Valve games. He claims that half of Valve is made up of (former) mod-makers.

Steam's NO-L4D2 is No More

Like others have said, it was a pointless exercise in trying to persuade Valve to meet their demands because Valve was going to support Left 4 Dead as well as release Left 4 Dead 2 anyway.

The steam boycott group is officially no more- at least that's what the leaders of the group say. The rest of the group (currently 40,670 members), are not satisfied, and are calling the two leaders sell outs. I guess either the group will be deleted, or new leaders will rise up. It's bound to happen.

I have Left 4 Dead, and I still haven't even played it yet. eek

Left 4 Dead 2 does look good from the screens I've seen though, I must say.

Not Another List: 7 Best New Horror Games for Halloween

It's been a while since I've done one of these, but I thought since it's October and it will soon be Halloween, I'd have a look at a list on GamePro, called "7 Best New Horror Games for Halloween".

As much as I'd like to slap one of the dudes for using "FAIL" in his comment, he's right in a way, this list isn't really good at all. Half of these games I wouldn't consider to be horror titles, and some of them are only coming out next year, never mind October, this year. Aliens vs. Predator is probably one of the only title on there that I will play, and that's coming out in February. I still wouldn't necessarily label it as horror as much as "thriller" or "sci-fi". It'll likely have some scary moments in it though. There are a couple of no-brainers on there like Left 4 Dead 2, which Valve says is going to outsell Left 4 Dead by a mile, even despite the whole boycott business.

BioShock 2 isn't a horror title.

Maybe I should talk about some of my favourite scary games sometime. They would be games from the past though. Clive Barker's Undying would be in there for sure.

Left 4 Dead Banned in Oz

So, continuing the Left 4 Dead 2 drama, first the game was boycotted by a group on Steam, now the controversial game has been banned in Australia. The melee weapons and the amount of gore were allegedly a big part in the decision.

Valve is disappointed at this, and responded thusly:

"We were surprised to hear of this news yesterday."
"Obviously, everyone at Valve is pretty bummed."
"It would be a shame if folks in Australia, or anywhere else, are unable to purchase Left 4 Dead 2 because of a ratings issue."

Valve's Gabe Newell in: Journey to Oz!

Talking about gamers getting ripped off, here's another interesting story going around lately.

If you haven't been keeping up with the situation, I'll keep it short and simple:

Valve started working on Left 4 Dead 2 less than a year after Left 4 Dead got out the door. This made the L4D community unhappy and they formed a boycott against the title. The boycott leaders were eventually flown to Valve's HQ to see the game in person, and came away pleased, and allegedly brainwashed, but said they would not drop the boycott until their respective demands were met. Some people have actually resigned from the boycott group on Steam, though- about at least 20 000 people since this happened. Result!

Jumping on the bandwagon, another guy from Australia wanted Gabe to see his modding effort for Left 4 Dead, but Gabe jokingly said to this guy, Joe W-A, that they were boycotting the project. So Bruce decided to raise the money to have his fat @$$ flown over to Oz to see it.

The guy raised about $ 3000 in less than 3 days, by getting donations from readers of his blog, "FlyGabeNewell".

So, Gabe Newell and Erik Johnson are now expected to fly over there and see his little project. In fact, a lot of people expect Gabe to pay for the trip himself, instead of stealing gamers' money. Some don't even know if he'll be able to fit through the airplane door, let alone his seat.

Didn't I say before that this guy was greedy?

Apparently Newell's words were as follows, “The English language lacks the words to express the level of excitement Erik and I feel that you and your friends have pulled this off."

I bet in reality it was something like: "Oh for f***'s sake!"

I wonder if someone had to say, "So Gabe, how much do we have to pay you to halt development on L4D2 and release it maybe a few years from now along with Half-Life 2: Episode 3," what his response would be?

"Uh, $ 2 000 000 and a box of twinkies," or something.

Anyway, it's all good fun, and I think this story is getting very twisted now. It'll likely be remembered for years to come. lol

Claims of Racism Against Left 4 Dead 2

Lately there's been an accusation by a blogger that Left 4 Dead 2, or L4D2, is racist or contains racism, due to the fact that there are black zombies that must be gunned down, and is offensive in other ways because it takes place in New Orleans, the place which experienced the brunt of hurricane Katrina.

Now the last time I heard something like this was when someone else said that Resident Evil 5, another zombie-shooter, was racist because of a lot of black zombies.

That game was set in Africa, and it was just being demographically correct, in my opinion.

This is what they should do- make zombies grey. Make it so that they lose all the colour of their flesh because of some sort of pigmentation alteration. Then they aren't white, black, brown, yellow, or red and nobody can complain.

That's it- make them grey...and green.
lol

Gabe Newell Wants Your Money, and More Money

Gabe Newell - 2002Maybe I took this the wrong way, but when I saw this headline over at several sites (I think it was GamePro first, as well Kotaku- originally Kotaku AU), I thought, "What the hell?"

Gabe Newell of Valve Corporation says he's interested in fan-funded games. He says that instead of going to fickle publishers for approval when it comes to games, he wants fans to give their money over to fund development.

One person over at Kotaku said that it wouldn't be practical with AAA games that cost tens of millions.

It's not usually how things work, but then again, Valve has brought new things to the table before. Think of Half-Life, and Half-Life 2, and how they both changed the way we looked at games. They became games that people aspired to- almost like measuring sticks of their respective eras, if you will.

Then there's Steam, the digital distribution platform, also by Valve, and DD is set to be the future of games.

But this...now fans have to fork out money for a game to be developed, and might even have to pay for the finished product as well.

I think this is going to be a controversial topic, and might even further alienate former and current Valve fans- the ones he's considering reaching out to. Remember L4D2, and how it was announced about five years too early?

All I want to know is, how did Gabe become so greedy, in addition to all ready being a fat b@stard?

He probably learned it from spending time working at Microsoft.razz

NO-L4D2: The Twenty Five Thousand Zombie March

24 616 Members as of June 10, 2009

The Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott is a group of individuals who
have pledged to boycott Valve's upcoming release of Left 4 Dead 2 on November 17th, 2009. We have assembled a manifesto outlining the basic concensus of many members of our community. (Note: this manifesto is a new version, which we have recently posted to keep our manifesto in line with the middle ground of our members. This is the correct group for the boycott)

WE RECOGNIZE:

-Valve is a company with financial needs and cannot be
expected to survive without the release of new games.

-Judgment cannot be passed on the quality of Left 4 Dead
2 until its release. -Left 4 Dead was, and is, a quality game which deserves the praise of the entire gaming community.

WE ARE COMMITTED:

-To holding Valve to its promise of free, continual
updates to Left 4 Dead in order to build and sustain the community.

-To keeping the Left 4 Dead community together in order to improve the quality of online gaming.

-To supporting the model of continual updates Valve has
set forth with its staple products like Team Fortress 2.

WE BELIEVE:

-The release of Left 4 Dead 2 as a stand-alone sequel
will split the communities and decrease the quality of multiplayer gaming. -The announced content of Left 4 Dead 2 does not warrant a stand-alone, full-priced sequel and should instead become updates (free or otherwise) for Left 4 Dead.

-Left 4 Dead has not yet received the support and
content which Valve has repeatedly stated will be delivered.

-The release of Left 4 Dead 2 will make Left 4 Dead an
obsolete purchase and inferior piece of software after only one year since release.

WE REQUEST:

-That Valve honor its commitment to release ongoing
periodic content for Left 4 Dead.

-That Left 4 Dead 2 not be released as a stand-alone,
full-priced sequel but as either a free update to Left 4 Dead or an expansion with full compatibility with basic Left 4 Dead owners.

-That Left 4 Dead owners be given discounts for Left 4 Dead 2, should it be released as premium content.

Therefore, we - the members of this Left 4 Dead 2
Boycott - promise to abstain from the purchase of Left 4 Dead 2 until our requests are addressed.

It's Left 4 Dead vs Call of Duty: World at War, and Valve is Feeling the Heat From the Torches and Pitchforks

A second map pack is coming out for CoD:WaW, and will contain another zombie map.

Left 4 Dead on the other hand, is getting a sequel called Left 4 Dead 2 all ready, which has enraged fans of Valve. Apparently there's a boycott over at Steam where over 10 000 (I've also read it was as much as 16 000) fans have pledged not to buy the product when it's released.

If you were wondering- no, Modern Warfare 2 will not contain any Zombie mini-games, seeing as it's not being developed by Treyarch, like CoD:WaW was.

I still wonder if the whole Zombie thing from CoD:WaW will continue on as a separate game, seeing as it's so popular. People don't seem to care about the regular CoD:WaW multiplayer. They're still killing the undead.

Current Gaming Trends: Nacht Der Untoten

What the hell is this Nacht Der Untoten that people are going on about lately?

Well, Call of Duty: World at War, the latest title in the COD WW II shooter series, features a bonus level that has this name, which translates from German into ‘Night of the Living Dead’. The level is unlocked once you finish the main campaign as far as I know, since I’ve played the game.

It can be played in both single-player and multi-player mode, and it entails human players as soldiers taking on German zombies. It’s only one map though, and yet so much fuss is being made over it. It plays similarly to Counter-strike, with money being awarded for doing certain tasks and you are able to open up certain areas of the level and buy weapons and other equipment with your hard-fought-over cash. It could also be compared to Left 4 Dead, another game with zombies released lately.

You progress through rounds that get harder as you go, with stronger zombies that also grow in number and are faster.

NAG magazine has really taken to this map lately, even producing a strategy guide and a custom made wallpaper. It seems to obviously be an office favourite when they’re slacking off as usual, and nearly missing deadlines.

Oh well, we’ll see how long it lasts, unless there’s a map pack full of zombie missions released.
Perhaps an original title like 'Tag Der Untoten' would be fitting.
