NAG August Issue Cover DVD Request Thread Now Open

It’s all ready that time again. Time for the suggestions for the August issue of NAG Magazine’s Cover DVD to commence. The July one seemed to go so quickly, and it’s now down from what I can see.

Miktar Dracon gets very serious about August’s Cover DVD suggestions:

“DIRECT LINKS ONLY - if your link does not bring up a download window when clicked, you're doing it wrong, and your file has zero chance of appearing on the DVD.

Errant posts will be deleted.”

Well, I guess there is the new Version 1.02 of The Dark Mod I could suggest they put on there. Anyway, if you want anything on the August issue of the Cover DVD, then follow the link at the bottom and join up so you can post something.

July 2010 Issue NAG Cover DVD Requests Open

The time for your requests for the June 2010 Issue of NAG’s Cover DVD is over. But now the thread for the July issue’s DVD is open.

Once again, anything you come across on the internet, you can put a link to it on the thread if you don’t feel like downloading it yourself, or perhaps it’s too big, or maybe you want to share the file with others and see it on the DVD, or you just might not have the privilege of having the internet yourself, but you somehow got the web address of the download.

I’ll likely put some suggestions on there myself. Off the top of my head, I can think of some trailers I’d like seeing as NAG *loves* trailers. I’d want both Call of Duty: Black Ops trailers on there, and the new F.E.A.R. 3 trailer.

I’d also like RoboCop 4. It’s this game I read about the other day that was developed by Anthony Burch, former editor of and occasional contributor to Destructoid.

Sony Doing Away With Floppies by Next Year

Remember the days of the 3.5” 1.44 MB floppy, that ironically some of us called a stiffy, which you would slip into your drive [the A: drive]? That little device is going out of business finally, as Sony, one of the companies that still makes them, is going to cease producing them in March of next year.

“Sony, one of just a few companies that still produce the archaic computer storage media, has announced plans to end production of floppies in March 2011.”

I still have a few of these lying around, but the bigger 5.25” floppies are rarer to come by. I still have an A: drive despite not using it that much at all, if ever [mostly never]. At school, years ago, we mainly used stiffies, or floppies, for distributing naughty things.

For the last few years most of us have been using flash drives, external hard drives, in addition to CDs and DVDS. And not to mention filehosting where a person can upload something to the internet for other people to have a look at.

Ubisoft Wants To Get Rid of Game Manuals

I have such good memories of game manuals. Whether it was Unreal, Half-Life: Opposing Force, No One Lives Forever – I could spend hours reading and re-reading these little booklets. Some of them were huge, like that of Homeworld. Didn’t enjoy that so much.

The manual for Red Alert 2. The guy pictured reminds me of my Geography teacher in high school.

First Ubisoft created waves with their new DRM methods. Now they want to do away with game manuals. Their excuse is that they’re going green and want to stop printing game manuals. All fair and well I suppose. I mean, a lot of games have manuals in PDF format on the game’s DVD nowadays anyway. And they’ve been doing that for years as far I remember.

"No more manuals? Ubisoft announced last week that they will be ditching the trend of printing instruction manuals for new games under the 'green' initiative.”

Cracking Down on Piracy by Using Disk Sniffing Dogs

I watched something on the news the other day.

In Portugal or some place, they had a black Labrador going through bags as part of a demonstration for the cameras. Now this is a scene that you’ve likely seen before. When I was in high school, we were searched by cops and their drug-sniffing dogs at least two or three times. And all of a sudden when we were told that on that day it would be time for the search, several kids went pale and asked to go to the bathroom so they could hide their stash somewhere, probably.

But this time, on the news, it wasn’t drugs they were after. They were after pirated CDs, DVDs, and the like. The guy controlling the dog explained that the substance that they train the dog to look, or smell, for is polycarbonate, which is present in the disks. They say it takes several months to train the dogs to do this.

I was also just reading about a sniffer dog in Malaysia as well, after googling it.

Quite interesting.
