It’s been a long standing myth that Michael Jackson, while still alive, helped do some composing on Sonic 3’s soundtrack, but just like in the famous episode of The Simpsons, “Stark Raving Dad”, he chose to not have his name credited. This is what a fellow musician, Brad Buxer says.
"And if he is not credited for composing the music, it's because he was not happy with the result sound coming out of the console. At the time, game consoles did not allow an optimal sound reproduction, and Michael found it frustrating. He did not want to be associated with a product that devalued his music.”
People often thought that Michael was the inspiration for the Sonic the Hedgehog character as well because of the white gloves, one of which sold recently for a few hundred thousand pounds. He apparently has close ties with SEGA.
Ken Horowitz of Sega-16.com however says that Buxer’s claims are unfounded.
Now, I don’t know about Sonic, seeing as I only ever played one of those games in my time but I’ll tell you something. I’ve often thought that work inspired by his music cropped up elsewhere as well. The song “Billy Jean” for instance – I’m quite convinced that part of this song inspired one of the tracks for Rise of the Triad, a shooter long forgotten, but now facing a reboot.
Maybe Lee Jackson, the guy who was credited with doing most of the soundtrack, was actually Michael Jackson. Hmmm…and so a new mystery begins.
