Ever Noticed How Clint Eastwood Sounds Like a Ghoul From Fallout 3 Nowadays?

        GoF3bClintEastwood Berlinale
                                 They even look similar. Damn…

Clint Eastwood has never been known for having anything but a deep, raspy, even gravelly voice. But as he’s gotten older, like in Gran Torino, which I saw the other night, I couldn’t help but think that Clint Eastwood reminds me of two different video game character voices.

One would be that of the male Ghouls, basically like Zombies, from Fallout 3. And the other would be the Dunmer, or Dark Elves, from The Elder Scrolls series, particularly Morrowind, I’m thinking. This is probably because it’s likely the same voice actor, since both game were made by Bethesda.

The guy can’t help it. He is old and all now [nearly eighty now], and I’ve enjoyed his films over the years, especially Gran Torino. But who wouldn’t want to see Clint doing some voice work for the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls game before he’s gone for good?

Have a listen to this clip I recorded from Gran Torino – some of the best bits – and see, or hear, and tell me what you think. While you’re listening, just picture Gob or some Ghoul from Fallout 3. I would’ve gotten a clip of one the Ghouls as well for a comparison, but I didn’t get around to it. I uninstalled the game you see.

Fallout: New Vegas Details, Collector’s Edition

fnvmayLast week there were a whole lot of Fallout: New Vegas previews and “first looks” that it was hard to sift through them all. All in all it was nothing we’d not heard of before.

Fallout: New Vegas will take place on the West coast of the former United States, or Capital Wasteland, rather than the Eastern Coast like in Fallout 3. It will however use the same engine as Bethesda’s title, but with a of of improvements. The player character will start off in Goodsprings Nevada. The character ends up getting shot in the head, and is later rescued by Vegas Vic, a robot who acts as an assistant to Doctor Mitchell. He heals you, and after that you can start with the character creation process. Unlike before, where you started off as a baby, child, and then progressed on as the tenacious teenager, this time you can choose your age.

Not to mention that there’s a hardcore mode which will make your life more miserable and probably more realistic in the game.

Here’s some more new screenshots by the way:

fnvmay (1) fnvmay (2)fnvmay (3) fnvmay (4)

Other interesting, and probably unsurprising, news is that Fallout: New Vegas will receive a Collector’s Edition. Obvious since the game is set around what was formerly known as Las Vegas, the pack will offer “Lucky 7” poker chips, a "Lucky 38" platinum chip, a deck of cards with illustrations of characters in the game, "The Making of Fallout: New Vegas" DVD – a documentary with some behind the scenes stuff, and a hardcover graphic novel called "All Roads", which basically tells the story leading up to that of the game.

The price of this Edition has been set for the PC as $69.99. By the way, there are some folk who are confident that this will outsell Fallout 3, if that’s possible.

Remastered Fallout 1 and 2 Soundtracks Available for Free

MMVA I’m quite a big fan of listening to video game soundtracks, and while reading through my news feeds the other night I saw something that perked my interest. The composer for the original Fallout titles, Mark Morgan, has remastered  all the songs he composed for Fallout 1 and 2, in a project of his called the “Vault Archives”.

And the best thing about it, and I would expect no less, is that it’s a free download. You can get all 24 tracks, which are remixed and remastered. You can download them over on Aural Network. There are four streaming sample tracks that you can play to listen to as well. There’s also a mirror on NMA, in case it doesn’t work on the former site.

I don’t know if I’ll download them all. I have heard the originals, most recently when someone made a mod which incorporated the songs from the original two games into Fallout 3. You can bet that I’ll be adding it to the queue for the NAG DVD though.

There were some jabs over on NMA, with some posters saying that you better hurry up and get it before Bethesda issues a Cease& Desist order.

Rage gets a Release Window, New Screenshots, Similar to Borderlands?

On this day: 5 May 2010 - May Day; 5 May 1992 – Wolfenstein 3D

rage All has been quite on the subject of Rage – id Software’s first real developed game since Doom 3, and the first original IP since Quake.

But some news hit recently about the post-apocalyptic themed title, and it was concerning a release date.

Bethesda, the publisher says that the game should be out next year. In other words, 2011. For a while there we were expecting it to come this year. All the versions of the game – PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 – will be released simultaneously.

Tim Willits of id Software gave reasons why the title would not see 2010:

“Because we haven’t even hit alpha on this thing yet. But we’re working very hard and we’re getting close to that. But it’s important that we get this right. There’s nothing worse than pushing something out before it’s ready.

And the great thing about Bethesda and Zenimax is the executive management has the faith in us to give us the resource that we need to do the right game. Because, trust me, it would be horrible if we were to release it and it was bad.

As you saw, it’s running well on the 360. There are some graphical things that John’s working through, that he’ll get fixed. But the engine’s pretty solid.”

There was also talk about the fact – and I’ve thought this for some time – that Rage looks quite similar to Borderlands. I also thought Fallout 3 as well, seeing as some claim that’s the game that clinched the deal between id Software and Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax, last year.

But the Design Director on the game, Matt Hooper, stepped in to give his take:

"I can see fans drawing comparisons -- and people naturally want to draw parallels between existing things -- but no, we're not just making another 'Doom' here. It's something new for us."

Rage is not a procedural landscape with heavy RPG elements and a billion weapons. It's a very crafted, focused, action shooter with a level of attention to detail that's just off the charts."

We knew we wanted to have vehicles, and that we could make a kick-ass shooter, so the two came together in a very natural way for the team."

We've got a finely crafted weapons, really creative engineering items like deployable turrets and remote controlled bombs. It's all about creating a rich universe to use the array of weapons and options at the player's disposal."

It's not a bad thing that people draw comparisons. I just hope that people get more information and see demos and really realize what makes Rage so unique. Even if this post-apocalyptic wasteland seems familiar at first."

In addition to all this, there’ve been some new screenshots released for the game as well.

RageaRageb RagecRaged Ragee

By the way, if you local SA gamers, or those in the UK even, happen to watch GameFace on Tuesdays, last night you would have heard from Julia Hardy that they will doing a feature on the game sometime soon.

Fallout: New Vegas - Details, Features, Vegas, Baby

FNV1

Fallout: New Vegas details were given in issues of various magazines lately, one of them none other that PC Gamer. I used to read that magazine a lot, but it costs a lot to buy here, I think, and the availability is also a problem seeing as Paperweight in Tygervalley Centre closed down.

Anyway, about those details. Everyone else is doing these lists, so I thought I would too. They’re not exactly the same as other blogs though. I did take the time to read through most of them, reword them, and add in my own little comments, as well as exclude all the fluff. Fun!

  • It's a first-person RPG. Fallout 3 had third person view as well, so whether they will opt to incorporate this or not will become apparent as time goes by.
  • It uses the same engine as Fallout 3: Gamebryo.
  • A new "Hardcore mode" will be available, in which stimpacks heal over time instead of instantly, ammo has weight (Fallout 3’s ammo didn’t), and players can suffer from dehydration, unless they drink something.
  • The story focuses on a conflict between three factions: the New California Republic, supposedly from Fallout 2, and located at McCarran Airport, Caesar's Legions, located on the Vegas strip, and the residents of New Vegas. The Super mutants are at Black Mountain.
  • Instead of the Capital Wasteland, like in Fallout 3, this wasteland is referred to as the “Mojave wastelands”.
  • The city of Las Vegas is mostly still intact, but it’s probably not in the same condition as it was hundreds of years ago.
  • There are new super mutants, as well as ones from Fallout 2 and 3 with different attributes, including the elite Nightkin.
  • Locations in the game include Fremont, Primm, the Hoover Dam, and Area 51 (Yeah!).
  • The player is not a Vault Dweller like in Fallout 3 but a courier who is rescued by a friendly robot.
  • You will have a Pip-Boy, but it’s given to you by a vault dweller.
  • New weapons will be available. Apparently one that looks like an M4 assault rifle (part of the M16 family. Come on, you’ve played Modern Warfare!). Wonder if the H&K 33A2 (or G3A3) model and the Chinese assault rifle will come back?
  • Followers can be managed via a context-sensitive menu. Thank you. No more having to keep going back and forth and talking to them all the time.
  • There are special moves for melee weapons in VATS.
  • Skills have a bigger effect on conversation choices.
  • There is a Reputation system in addition to Karma, like in the Elder Scrolls games such as Morrowind.

In related and covered news, a trailer was released for New Vegas recently, and the release date was given as Fall 2010.

Fallout: New Vegas Coming Mid-2010, New Trailer

FNV I seem to recall a while back, in fact it was last month, that this title was said to be coming this year. Now the word is that Fallout: New Vegas will be coming in “Fall” this year, but by saying, that they’re referring to the Northern Hemisphere, so to clear things up a bit for us down in the Southern part of  the world: somewhere in the middle of 2010. I remember reading it was about June, but Fall could mean somewhere in a three month target.

In addition to this, a trailer for the game has been released, showing a glimpse of what the trip to Las Vegas, or what’s left of it, will be like.

Fallout: New Vegas

New Vegas is being developed by Obsidian, published by Bethesda, and it should be out this year. The game is not a sequel to Fallout 3 or any other Fallout title, but is classified as more of a spin-off title in the same series or universe. It does take place on the West Coast of the former United States, more akin to the first Fallout games, and unlike Fallout 3 which took place for the most part on the East Coast, in Washington D.C.

I’m a little doubtful about the Fall release date actually. Even though it’s been in development for some time, we’ve hardly seen anything of the game, although, the word is we’ll be hearing and seeing more of it soon. So things could be looking up.

Fallout: New Vegas Possibly Coming in June 2010, New Game Info Coming Soon

Fallout_NV It came from a forum post on DuckAndCover, a Fallout fan-site, that GameStop and Play-Asia have listed release dates as June 2010 for Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian’s RPG title that we’ve heard of, but seen little.

I’ve just had a look on Amazon, and the game is unavailable for pre-order, for PS3 and Xbox 360. Not sure where the PC version is. Amazon doesn’t seem to have any release date listed.

In addition to this news, the British version of OXM, Official Xbox Magazine, will have the first exclusive information on the game in next month’s issue. It was falsely reported a few days ago that it would be Game Informer magazine that would get the scoop on New Vegas. Bethesda subsequently refused to comment on these rumours and it’s been proposed that this was false information.

Some of this info on the game that was on a Gamespot forum claimed that there would be character selection (rather than creation), drivable vehicles, and gambling – seeing as the game will take place in Las Vegas… or what’s left of it anyway.

News: ZeniMax Media Has The Rights to Rage

Day of Reconciliation (SA)

Although that headline may seem as though their planning some horrible sort of revenge on the world (which they might be), it’s actually related to the game Rage, by id Software, currently still in development.

Previously, EA was going to publish the game, but ZeniMax Media recently acquired the publishing rights to the title, and has said that Bethesda Softworks will publish the title when it’s released, hopefully next year.

Earlier this year, ZeniMax bought id Software to add to their stable which includes Fallout 3 developer Bethesda. This was a move that shocked most of the world, or at least the gaming population, seeing as id, up until then, had remained independent for 17 years.

As regards the publishing rights being shifted to Bethesda Softworks, some people have claimed that EA got shafted on the whole deal, and that it was coming for months, but EA claims there are no hard feelings, and wishes them all the best. It’s nothing personal; it’s business.

As Loot Ninja wrote though, why should ZeniMax pay EA, an outside, third party company to publish the title, when they can do it themselves? Initially after the buyout earlier this year, id’s next shooter, Doom 4, was going to be the first game by id published by BethSoft, but now that’s going to change, and Rage will be the first. It will also be the title to debut the id Tech 5 engine. That should mean it will be called the “Rage engine” for some time, and not something else, like the Doom, Quake, Quake II, Quake III, or Doom 3 engine. Damn, that’s also a first.

ZeniMax is going to handle all sales and marketing as regards Rage, and issued a press release with all this information, among it, saying that Rage’s development will be unaffected by this issue.

The game should be out in 2010 on PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Video Game-Inspired Fan-Fiction Novels Coming Your Way

It seems as though video game-inspired fan-fiction novels are all the rage at the moment. There are three coming out by the end of the year that I’ve read about: Assassin’s Creed: Renaissance, Splinter Cell: Endgame, and the one I’ve heard most about, The Elder Scrolls: The Infernal City.

The first to hit will be The Elder Scrolls: The Infernal City, written by by Greg Keyes, which will be published by Del Rey on the 24th of November. There were recently hints in the novel’s blurb that alluded to a fifth Elder Scrolls game, and this blurb was subsequently taken down, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure that Bethesda would never drop one of their most successful franchises. There’s and excerpt from The Infernal City available online right now at randomhouse.com. It’s not bad, I guess. I had a read of it today.

The second one, following close behind, is Assassin’s Creed: Renaissance, written by Oliver Bowden, which will be published by Penguin on 26th November, just after the game’s release, which is scheduled for the 20th. It’s funny because there was initially a trilogy of books planned for the Assassin’s Creed series, including The Invisible Imam, but they were cancelled. There’s a description of the novel, Assassin’s Creed: Renaissance, on Amazon.

The third one I’ve read about is to be published by Berkley, and indeed based on another Ubisoft game- Splinter Cell: Endgame (not to be confused with EndWar, another Tom Clancy title, or Megadeth’s latest album, Endgame). This one is going to be released in December, and is based on the Splinter Cell series. In addition to this, there will be a novel based on HAWX, predictably called Tom Clancy's HAWX. They are both written by a "David Michaels" which is said to be a pseudonym used by many different authors.

When's the last time that Tom Clancy wrote a novel, anyway? It's just become a brand name.

The only novel that doesn’t have a tie-in title to speak of is the Elder Scrolls novel, it seems.

Is Bethesda Really Going to Buy Valve?

Speaking of Bethesda, there’s a rumour going around that Bethesda, or more appropriately, its parent company, ZeniMax Media, is going to buy Valve. That’s right- the developer that’s responsible for the epic Half-Life series as well as Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, among other games and acquired mods over the years, like Portal and Counter-Strike.

Earlier this year, ZeniMax Media bought the legendary id Software, and so started all the jokes involving “Bethidsda”, and “identity crisis”.

Now although this would be a major acquisition, I’m about 90 to 95 % sure that this is bogus. Why would this happen anyway? Would Gabe Newell really consider this? I think it’s untrue, but I guess we'll see soon enough.

Elder Scrolls V Revealed in Novel Blurb…Briefly

Over the past few days, I’ve been busy with other stuff, and so my feeds have been building up, most of them unread. This is a nightmare when it comes to Kotaku, because their feeds mainly contain a lot of inane rubbish (worse than my stuff), and pictures that clog up the whole process of wading through it.

Anyway, I did come across something interesting on there recently. Kotaku noticed a blurb for the Elder Scrolls novel, Infernal City, at waterstones.com, which read as follows:

“A novel that takes places forty-five years after the Oblivion Crisis, which is the story of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion game and the expansion pack Shivering Isles. It partly bridges the gap for the next game, which is set 200 years after the Oblivion crisis.”

This text has apparently been taken down since then, and in these cases, even though it may just be a rumour, it seems to confirm the situation, since it happens on sites like Linkedin all the time. Someone posts some sensitive information, and later it gets taken down, or the person’s profile is deleted.

This is the new synopsis:

"Four decades after the Oblivion Crisis, Tamriel is threatened anew by an ancient and all-consuming evil. It is Umbriel, a floating city that casts a terrifying shadow - for wherever it falls, people die and rise again. And it is in Umbriel's shadow that a great adventure begins, and a group of unlikely heroes meet. A legendary prince with a secret."

There’s no doubt in my mind that there will be another Elder Scrolls game, although there are concerns that this game might be an MMO.

Infernal Sky will be published in 32 days, late November, as of the time of writing.

Bethesda Sues Interplay Over a Lot of Things

First it was Take-Two and 3D Realms, now Bethesda is suing Interplay, the original creators of the Fallout series over their misuse and abuse of the Fallout licence.

This apparently happened due to the release of Fallout Trilogy- a pack which includes Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics.

Even though Interplay was able to sell the original games, they had to show Bethesda the details first before commencing. Beth also doesn't like the fact that Fallout games are available online at places like GoG.com, Steam, and other digital distribution services. Their also upset that Interplay hasn't begun "full development" on the Fallout MMO, rumoured to be titled Project V13.

Now Beth claims that people are confused with their Fallout 3 and Interplay's Fallout Trilogy, and perhaps that therefore means Beth is losing sales (hardly).

But funnily enough, this has happened to me. I know the difference between the two titles, but not everyone does, at least not non-gamers.

I've been in a store before, looking for Fallout Trilogy and the package I was shown had Fallout 3 written on it as well as Fallout 3 artwork and all and yet there was a sticker on the box that said Fallout Trilogy. rolleyes

ZeniMax Acquires Rights to Prey: Prey 2 a Reality?

ZeniMax Media, who recently acquired id Software to add to their stable which also includes Bethesda, have now got the rights to Prey from Apogee, and have registered trademarks under different and almost all forms of media.

Now there is speculation as to who will work on the sequel to Prey which nobody has heard that much of. It was initially announced by Radar Group- a Scott Miller project, but there hasn't been that much news about it until now.

Wishful thinking has led to some to believe that id Software, busy working on Rage, which will probably be followed by Doom 4, will develop or have something to do with Prey 2, or perhaps Bethesda Softworks will. Others say that naturally the game will be delayed for even longer, but on the plus side, if Apogee sold the rights to ZeniMax, it may mean they have the funding to do something about the whole DNF situation.

Yes, we still care about Duke.

Prey used the id Tech 4 (Doom 3) engine when it came out back in 2006, and because of id belonging to ZeniMax, even if they don't work on the game, I'd say it's probably a safe bet to assume that Prey 2, whenever it comes out, will likely use the id Tech 5 engine (note: this is just my opinion, don't state it as fact).

I played the original Prey, developed by Humanhead, and I thought it was okay- maybe not brilliant though. I remember seeing a music video that had detailed a Prey deathmatch complete with wall and ceiling walking and all that stuff, playing to "(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" by The Crystal Method and Filter.

Yeah, that game was weird.

Bethesda Speaks, People Don't Listen...Properly

Bethesda was misquoted the other day at QuakeCon when many people were lead to believe that it was said that there will not be another Elder Scrolls game in the future. Bethesda responded by commenting on their blog by basically saying "never say never, and we didn't".
There are also rumours now of an Elder Scrolls MMO, similar to World of Warcraft, presumably.

Do you really think Bethesda would drop one of their most successful franchises, next to Fallout 3? Come on.

Speaking of which, Bethesda is claiming that Mothership Zeta will be the last DLC pack for the game, and that five is enough, but then again, never say never I suppose. Of course it won't be the end of the Fallout games, as there's still Fallout: New Vegas- by Obsidian.

Bethesda's new step-sister, id Software, says that their Fallout 3, otherwise known as the hotly anticipated Rage, which will be released next year, will not feature monster-closets, a gimmick featured in Doom 3 a hell of a lot (get it?).

id also says that Doom 4 will not have much talk until next year, once Rage is out, likely.

John Romero says "Leave me Alone!"

Last month, John Romero tweeted some stuff about id Software selling out, and other such stuff. Of course gaming journos ate it up, and gamers the world over hated on John.

Now he's caught on after reading through a lot of these reports, and has said the following,

"I was wrong about Fallout 3 buying Doom. Zenimax bought both from their $300m coffers. Acquire!"

Followed by:

"Was reading comments about my id/zenimax tweets a month ago. Should not be a news story, lol."

But John, a little bird (it was John Carmack! lol) told us that you like the spotlight. Well, hint taken, I won't say any more...until next time!

Bethesda Releases Daggerfall as Freeware

With Bethesda being so busy nowadays, it's good to see that they had the time to get one of their old games, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, out and make it free to download, as a way to celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls. Arena is also available as freeware- that was done back in 2004, on the tenth anniversary.

Is it too much to hope that on the twentieth one, that Morrowind becomes freeware?

If you're not familiar with The Elder Scrolls series, Daggerfall is the sequel to Arena, and was followed by Morrowind and Oblivion.

Still not familiar? Shame on you.
neutral

It's a 148 MB download, and is provided "as is" apparently, so you'll need DOSbox, an emulator, to play it. DOSbox has full support for Daggerfall, so no problems there.

ZeniMax Buys id Software= Bethidsda

This is the latest big news doing the rounds:

Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax, bought the legendary id Software, which was independent for eighteen years until recently, and responsible for some of the most ground-breaking games of all time. Think Wolfenstein 3D- the grandaddy of FPS titles, Doom, and Quake, and the successors in each of those series. Not to mention the idTech engines which have been used by many games.

John Romero, one of the co-founders of id Software, was initially appauled at the whole situation, calling it "disgusting", but later changing his tune and apologising for his earlier comments:

"ZENIMAX??????? Disgusting."

"Fallout 3 bought DOOM. Wow."

"I am positive about the Zenimax deal. My initial reaction was harsh. Sorry."

"I guess I was shocked and sad to see the id Software of old changed forever today. It's a new day and a new id."

This whole situation won't affect any of id's games in development, like Wolfenstein (by Raven), or Rage, or Doom 4. Part of the reason why id made the deal with ZeniMax was apparently so they could enlarge their studio, and develop more of their games internally, a concern of some of the publishers id has talked to. In the past, a few companies such as Grey Matter, Neversoft, Activision, Splash Damage, and Raven have handled the making of some id's games.

Some might scream "id sold out!", but others claim that it's a good situation as far as the fans are concerned, as more games might be developed, and might come out sooner too. Others think of the possibilties as far as Bethesda and id Software as a joint venture are concerned- not that it will happen, but still. Speaking of which, Fallout 3 is being credited as helping to seal the deal between the two companies.

Bill Clinton Might Have been president in Fallout 3

It's been rumoured that none other than Bill Clinton was thought of to voice the role of John Henry Eden, the president in Fallout 3, who was often heard on those funny floating things around town, on the Enclave radio station, and eventually in Raven Rock, the Enclave HQ.

It was just an idea though, and never a serious one - Bethesda got Blindlight to ask, and the answer was "no", unsurprisingly.

It's just as well. Imagine this scene, if ol' Slick Willy had been in Fallout 3:

Bethesda gets Busy…Ruining other People’s Plans

Bethesda is going to be pi$$ing two camps off now- Elder Scrolls fans, and Aliens and/or Predator fans.

The next Elder Scrolls installment will be a novel and then another after it.

Fans of the Elder Scrolls will have to be content with Morrowind and Oblivion for the foreseeable future as Bethesda has turned over the work of writing two novels to continue the series to Greg Keyes, to be released this year. The first book is called The Infernal City.

Bethesda’s also busy with their game, WET, and in addition to this, they’ve given Fallout: New Vegas to Obsidian, who was supposed to be developing an Aliens RPG at one point, and they’ve given Rogue Warrior to Rebellion, supposed to be developing Aliens vs. Predator.
