Ever Noticed How Clint Eastwood Sounds Like a Ghoul From Fallout 3 Nowadays?

        GoF3bClintEastwood Berlinale
                                 They even look similar. Damn…

Clint Eastwood has never been known for having anything but a deep, raspy, even gravelly voice. But as he’s gotten older, like in Gran Torino, which I saw the other night, I couldn’t help but think that Clint Eastwood reminds me of two different video game character voices.

One would be that of the male Ghouls, basically like Zombies, from Fallout 3. And the other would be the Dunmer, or Dark Elves, from The Elder Scrolls series, particularly Morrowind, I’m thinking. This is probably because it’s likely the same voice actor, since both game were made by Bethesda.

The guy can’t help it. He is old and all now [nearly eighty now], and I’ve enjoyed his films over the years, especially Gran Torino. But who wouldn’t want to see Clint doing some voice work for the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls game before he’s gone for good?

Have a listen to this clip I recorded from Gran Torino – some of the best bits – and see, or hear, and tell me what you think. While you’re listening, just picture Gob or some Ghoul from Fallout 3. I would’ve gotten a clip of one the Ghouls as well for a comparison, but I didn’t get around to it. I uninstalled the game you see.

Legal Battle Between 3D Realms and Take-Two Ends in Settlement

3DRealms.jpg.w300h233 VS. take-two

                                        Friendship. Friendship? Again?

Finally, the legal woes that have raged on for over the past year between the once great developer and publisher 3D Realms and the publisher Take-Two Interactive has come to an end as of last month.

It’s been said that the two companies settled out of court and the lawsuits have been dropped. The battle started over 3D Realms’ reported failure to release Duke Nukem Forever, and allegedly costing Take-Two millions of dollars in investment. 3DR let go of the development team working on DNF because they couldn’t afford to keep working on it due to funding issues with T2. This is when T2 swooped in with the lawsuit and tried to add insult to injury. 3DR reportedly made a counter-suit though.

Alan Lewis, Take-Two:

“We can confirm that the matter has been resolved, and the company is not providing additional details of the agreement.”

And now this means that Duke Nukem Forever is cleared for release. It’s likely not finished, but there you are. It’s unknown whether T2 will still publish the game.

New Mortal Kombat Game Coming Next Year, New Movie in Future Too

Mortalkombat I agree with those who say that the last great Mortal Kombat game that ever showed up was indeed Mortal Kombat Trilogy. MK II was great, but Trilogy just put it all together – fighters and arenas from all previous games up to that point.

I will say that the animations from MK II were actually quite good - particular the ninjas and so on like Scorpion.

After Trilogy, back in 1996, the series has taken a long, slow downward turn, which culminated in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe not too long ago. Many argue that it lost its edge. And of course Midway fell apart last year and went bankrupt, with Warner Bros. buying out the studio responsible for the MK games.

Anyhow, the new Mortal Kombat game headed by Ed Boon and NetherRealm Studios, formerly known as WB Games Chicago, received a trailer and a lot of fanfare recently. They say it’s a kind of a like a remake of the original games, but in 3D. But more like Street Fighter IV, where even though things are in 3D, the fighting and so on is strictly 2D.

The first MK game to try 3D out was Mortal Kombat 4. Likely nowhere near as good as Trilogy, it looked awful – even back then.

This new Mortal Kombat, called “Mortal Kombat 9” for some time now, but now just titled Mortal Kombat, is set to be the series’ rebirth. it should be out on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2011. This all means that upon its release, it would have taken 15 years to get another great MK title.

Now I hate to be nitpicky, but if you really want to win people over again, you should come up with at least a decent PC port. Stay tuned for a petition coming your way soon.

Hey by the way, there’s also a video clip that is said to have been a pitch for the new Mortal Kombat movie doing the rounds on the net which you might like to see. They say its pretty damn awesome as well.

My Time as a Video Game Character: Duke Nukem

DukenukemII This time it was once again in the 90’s when I was in school and at the time, Duke Nukem was my hero. Seriously. Others has Superman, Batman, or Spiderman – I had Duke friggin’ Nukem.

The one year I was invited to a birthday party which was hosted in the school’s assembly hall with the headmaster’s permission, probably.

It was kind of awkward that day seeing as I had friend over at my house, and he wasn’t invited to the party, yet I was.

Anyhow. Dressing up as Duke Nukem is pretty easy, and I think at the time I hadn’t even heard of, let alone played Duke Nukem 3D – only the first two games. And so I put on some blue jeans, and a red shirt with the sleeves rolled up over my shoulders, and even had the metal bicep rings, or whatever you call them, although they were made of some flimsy material, and kept falling down my arms all the time.

I even had the gun. It was this machinegun which looked similar to the one from Wolf 3D, and made a clacking noise when you pulled the trigger. The only thing I didn’t have was the sunglasses. Duke Nukem didn’t have those until Duke 3D in any case.

I was driven down to the school and went inside to the hall where I met up with some other friends of mine who actually were invited. One of them was dressed up as one of his favourite wrestlers – Henry “H.O.G.” Godwinn. He had the chains wrapped around his shoulder and everything.

We naturally got in to a wrestling match right there and then. It was Duke Nukem versus Henry Godwinn – and the son of a b*tch nearly broke my thumb. He dropped right down on my hand and thumb, and I had the most intense pain, which lingered for years afterwards.

Granted, I wasn’t as tough as old Duke, but I didn’t cry anyway.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II Gets a Collector’s Edition

SWTFU2CE2Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II will be getting a Collector’s Edition, it’s been revealed.

LucasArts has shown off the Collector’s Edition of the game which will cost $20 more than the standard one.

What’s in it? Three exclusive game levels, character skins like that of Deak Starkiller, a lightsaber crystal [obviously], as well as a SteelBook. And there’s also a 2 GB USB flash drive which has other good stuff on it like a digital art book, a script, and wallpapers.

By the way, the Collector’s Edition is only for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game. The PC, DS, and Wii don’t look like they’ll get one.

Telltale Making Jurassic Park and Back to the Future Titles

jurassic-parkAh, I remember watching Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park years ago. Actually I watched it the other day, and I enjoyed it as much. I also remember playing this game based on Jurassic Park – I think on one of the Sega consoles or or something years ago. Probably a Genesis, which my friend had at one point.

Well, Telltale, makers of the Sam& Max games, are apparently going to work on a Jurassic Park game, which will also be in episodic format, and released on a variety of consoles. This was seen in an issue of Game Informer.

CEO Dan Connors:

"I think it's a prime time to reintroduce these properties in the digital world. Telltale Games has always set out to be a great storytelling company. We've been honing our chops over the past six years, and we're ready to take on these two iconic properties and continue to advance storytelling in games."

"The games are going to exist within these worlds. I wouldn't call these games sequels per se but a new interpretation of their worlds for a new medium. For one generation, it's an introduction to these series. For another generation, it's a thing they can look back on and something they can share warmly with their family and friends."

BTTF1 And in addition to that, it’s been said that the company will also be doing something similar for a little sci-fi series called Back to the Future – something that Spielberg also had something to do with {he was the producer of the series]. And I’ll say that past games based on both series have been pretty bad – particularly BTTF.

Information on these games is yet to be released, but it is known that they will appear on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC and Mac.

Portal 2 Crosses Over to 2011, Related Surprise at E3

256px-Portal_standalonebox First Portal 2’s E3 showcase was said to be cancelled, although there will be a “surprise” related to the game at the event. Previously there were many conspiracy theories and rumours saying that it would be Half-Life 2 Episode 3, Half-Life 3, and Source Engine 2, or even Duke Nukem Forever that would be the big surprise. Most of these if not all have now been dismissed as just speculation.

Now Portal 2, originally said to be coming out this year sometime, has been pushed back in 2011.

“Representatives from both companies acknowledged that public safety concerns factored into the decision,” the release itself reads. “They went on to say that even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won’t instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time.”

"To ask questions about how close we all came to dying, or to ask futile questions about the previously announced E3 ***PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD'S SAKE*** surprise or, less futilely, to schedule an appointment to attend a 'Portal 2' screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's delegate to the EU's Valve Time Studies Group, Doug Lombardi.”

Max Payne 3 Delayed, Possibly to Slip into 2011

max-payne-3

“Sorry guys. Couldn’t make the party.” Bloody loser.

The latest financial results from Take-Two Interactive suggest that Max Payne 3, which was due for a release in 2010, has now been delayed yet again, with the publisher saying within that "the launch of Max Payne 3 has been moved out of fiscal 2010."

The game, in development at Rockstar Vancouver, was initially meant for a late 2009 release, before being delayed to 2010.

CEO Ben Feder:

“While we do not take the movement of any title lightly, our recent success with Red Dead Redemption illustrates the importance and the benefit of giving a title the time it needs in order to fulfil its potential in the marketplace. The team at Rockstar is focused on making this the best experience in interactive entertainment.”

The title does not appear in the company’s 2010 fiscal year, which ends on the 31st of October, and this means that it could see a very late Q4 release, but most likely it will make 2011 instead, according to some.

By the time the game gets out, it will be going on a decade since the last game, Max Payne 2, was released. The first game in the series came out in 2001.

Keen Dreams: The Doom Effect

Doom_2_shepard

You wouldn’t see a pretty boy like Shepard taking on the Cyberdemon

I usually note down some of the dreams I have, and keep the ones that are more original or intriguing to myself for use in one of my fiction efforts. Then you get the ones that are more clichéd and have been done to death. The events in this dream probably fall into this category.

It all started with me being the commander on a tank, possibly the Mako, rolling down streets and through buildings, taking out enemy troops. As we reached the crossroads of a section in the neighbourhood however, we were overwhelmed by soldiers who were taking cover behind the bushes, and they flanked us, taking out the vehicle – probably with some heavy weaponry.

Then we were led alongside the road, past all the prisoners of war that had been captured by the enemy, as they sat looking miserable on the grassy banks between the trees. The crew of the tank and I walked along this rode which was lined with ropes hanging from the trees – probably to execute those were unlucky enough to have been caught; to set an example.

But as we crossed the field, through the woods, and left the POWs behind, we came upon a cliff that had a cove of sorts within. We all jumped in to the water below and went inside. Ahead there was a portal of sorts.

We foolishly entered in to it and were swept off to another dimension where we saw the most horrific events unfolding. People being tortured, victimized, and impish creatures playing devilish pranks on unsuspecting inhabitants.

We’d stumbled into a hell of sorts. Not just a hell; the Hell.

Some of the group were captured, while the rest of us ran as fast as we could, trying to find a way out of this place. An undead creature of some sort got a hold of me and pulled me back as I tried to wrestle free from his clutches. Then it went black.

I woke up and I was back in the water again. Somehow what was left of the group had managed to escape and I assumed I had been rescued and was now back in the cove, on the other side of the portal this time, where we first entered.

I was treading water and trying to make my way to a ladder of sorts that was hanging from the cliff. I started to climb my way up, struggling all the while, only to reach the top, and see the ladder start to slip, and come loose. I fell back in the water, and it was a frantic, terrified effort to get to another ladder that was on the cliffside further down. I climbed up and this time I reached the top. We were safe – for now.

There was some machinery and equipment lying around in the cove, and it looked as though a small base of operations had been established there. There was a map* on a screen which clearly had the word “Contra” written on it and a diagram showing the portal. But we knew that in whatever language this was, it might as well have been a synonym for Hell. We knew firsthand because we’d seen the other side.

We’d gone in the @sshole of Hell, and come back out again… somehow alive.

Footnotes

* The map was similar to that of the Mass Effect map used in the game to travel to different planets and so on.

The Keen Dreams series is a AAA original, and is all about video games in dreams, and dreams in video games… and dream which involve stuff about video games.

It’s STALKER Week over at GamersGate

I saw this over on GamersGate’s Twitter account.

This week is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. week over at the digital distribution service. You can get S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl for less than $10, saving you 50%; S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Dead Space 2 Box Art Revealed, Less Graphic This Time

Dead_Space_2 The first Dead Space’s box art was very visceral indeed [Visceral Games, previously known as EA Redwood Shores, developed the game]. It features a severed hand floating in space, as well as some other unidentifiable body parts or something in the background.

How could they top that? They haven’t, but they’ve got Isaac Clarke’s helmet on the cover – probably one of the more recognisable helmets out there. It’s like an unfolding or self-unpacking one.

The game should be out next year for multiple consoles, including, yes… the PC.

Red Faction: Armageddon Details, Media Released

Red Faction 4 has been known to exist in some form for some time now, and many have even known the supposed title of this game, because of some registered domains that were dug up. Recently Red Faction: Armageddon was announced this month before E3.

Volition will once again take the reigns on this title as the game’s events will take you back to Mars, and sees characters underground, much like the first game in the series. It’s also a third person action title like 2009’s Red Faction: Guerrilla, and so far has been compared to Dead Space or even Doom 3, looking at the screenshots and the trailer which have been made public.

Red Faction ArmageddonRed Faction Armageddon 2 Red Faction Armageddon 3Red Faction Armageddon 4

In the game you’ll play as Darius Mason, grandson of Alec Mason from RFG, and destroy environments as in tradition in Red Faction games with Geo-Mod 2.0 tech, with some physic based weapons like a Magnet Gun, and you’ll get to try all this out in singleplayer and co-operative modes. According to a THQ press release, the game is set underground 50 years after the events of RFG, because the surface has been rendered uninhabitable, and there’s a war on.

The game should be out next year, with the game scheduled for a March 2011 release date, with the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 as set platforms.

NAG August Issue Cover DVD Request Thread Now Open

nagonlinelogo It’s all ready that time again. Time for the suggestions for the August issue of NAG Magazine’s Cover DVD to commence. The July one seemed to go so quickly, and it’s now down from what I can see.

Miktar Dracon gets very serious about August’s Cover DVD suggestions:

“DIRECT LINKS ONLY - if your link does not bring up a download window when clicked, you're doing it wrong, and your file has zero chance of appearing on the DVD.

Errant posts will be deleted.”

Well, I guess there is the new Version 1.02 of The Dark Mod I could suggest they put on there. Anyway, if you want anything on the August issue of the Cover DVD, then follow the link at the bottom and join up so you can post something.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II Arriving on the PC

SWTFU2 The first Star Wars: The Force Unleashed game didn’t release on the PC, but made it to most other consoles out there.

Then Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition did make it to the PC with some added features that weren’t in the original, albeit more than a year later.

Now it’s been confirmed that the second game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, announced late last year, will appear on the PC this time. The PC port is being worked on by Aspyr, who ported Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition to the PC.

The title should be released on October 26, 2010. Hopefully the PC version will come out at the same time, this time.

My Time as a Video Game Character: Doomguy

doomguy2 There were likely a few times in my life as a young boy were I tried to dress up and imitate a character in a video game – something which the initiated called Cosplay – which seems to be big not only in America, but Japan as well. It’s huge there, from what I’ve seen.

There was a time years ago when I was in school and they class project was to dress up as either a spaceman or an alien of sorts. I decided I wanted not only to be a space man – but a space marine.

I’d just gotten my new computer that year: a Pentium 100 MHz, and on it I had the shareware version of Doom with the famous episode named “Knee Deep in the Dead”.

This inspired me to dig in the cupboards and see what I could get to make myself look the part. So I managed to get a fishbowl. You’ve seen pictures of people or adverts on TV [I have], where people put a fishbowl on their head and pretend they’re in space. I did that. What did I do for a gun? I could have had a bb gun, or a water pistol; something even mildly realistic. But what did I do? I used a snorkel.

So there I was running up and down the driveway with my getup on, getting a headache because of a mix of the sun beating down on my head, the hyperactivity of a child, and the fact that I probably wasn’t getting enough oxygen with that bloody bowl on my head.

I went to school the next day and the teacher just laughed at my “costume”, which probably looked nothing like Doomguy at all. But kids have something called an imagination, and so we think we look the part.

We had to line up outside the classroom – which was a bungalow, seeing as the school was still expanding at the time – to get ready to head in to the neighbouring class to show off our outfits. All I remember before going in was that some idiot clubbed me over the head with something, intentionally or by accident I’m not sure, which not only gave me another headache, but cracked my helmet as well.

There I was – a space marine with a hole in my head gear. At least I could finally get some oxygen. On Phobos, Deimos, or Mars I’d be dead though.

Alan Wake Hampers June 2010 Competition

AW360 I saw something in the latest issue of NAG when I got it on Thursday, and that was an two page spread near the end of the magazine. I talked about a competition where you can win Alan Wake Hampers.

The first prize is a Collector’s Edition of Alan Wake, along with an Xbox 360 Elite, a Mini Mag torch, and some Halloween goodies like false vampire teeth and so on.

The 2nd and 3rd runners-up get the standard edition of Alan Wake for Xbox 360, and the Mini Mag torch.

I like the idea of the torch seeing as light plays quite a big role in the game from what I’ve seen. My brother has one of those torches – but the big one – and let me tell you could easily club some attacker over the head and they’d know about it.

To enter the competition, just SMS “light” sans quotes to 36560. SMSs cost R5. Winners will be notified via SMS, and the competition ends on Wednesday, the 30th June, 2010. Only people from SA can enter.

The competition is sponsored by wantitall.co.za
