Video Games Coming out This Week [03-21 – 03-27, 2010]: Just Cause 2

Human Rights Day

             JC2 S7PTK

AAA’s Targets of the Week: Just Cause 2, Mass Effect: Firewalker, The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom

This week sees the release of Just Cause 2 for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. The original game was considered by some to be nothing more than a GTA clone, but it’s gone on to become perhaps even more mad and crazy, with unbelievable stunts similar to what you’d see in Hollywood being shown in the trailers for this game.

Bad news for PC gamers though, seeing as the game doesn’t support Windows XP; Vista and Windows 7 only. The reason for this was given as the fact that the game was designed to support DirectX 10 fully, and so XP with DX 9 is completely out.

Other games that are out this week include the free DLC pack for Mass Effect 2, called Firewalker, which adds some new missions, and a new vehicle to replace the somewhat disliked, and perhaps a bit unrealistic Mako from Mass Effect: the M57 Hammerhead. Just to make it clear: it’s free to Cerberus Network users. Everyone else has to pay a membership fee to get it.

There’s The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom too – but beware, because this is another Ubisoft published title and incorporates their highly controversial new DRM, just like Assassin’s Creed II for the PC did.

A big Wii title that everybody’s been going on about for some time is Red Steel 2. That comes out this week too. It’s basically like an East meets West sort of game, with guns and swords and stuff.

Links as usual go to Amazon for retail versions, but also Direct2Drive, Steam, etc, for digital distribution versions. You can also check my Amazon aStore to see what the latest and greatest games are.

Just Cause 2 Demo Out, Title Supports SteamWorks

JCdemo

“Oh, the demo should be about… that big.”

Today, the 4th of March, should see the release of the Just Cause 2 demo for all platforms [1] – namely Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The demo is said by many to be huge, at 35 square miles, and major replayability for a demo.

On another note, just like some other major titles released last year and this year, like Modern Warfare 2 and Aliens vs. Predator, as well as Supreme Commander 2 and Napoleon: Total War, Just Cause 2 will support SteamWorks [2].

This won’t just mean that the game will likely only be available for download off of Steam, but also other features such as “matchmaking, automatic game updates, and downloadable content” will be handled by Steam. The console versions will no doubt be available off of Xbox Live and PSN.

It was also confirmed recently for the umpteenth time that the game will not support Windows XP, and therefore nor will it support DirectX 9. Just Cause 2 should be out later this month, on the 23rd of March.

It’s March, and it’s Man’s Month

mmm16s

Well, like I said the other day, it’s the end of February, and the end of everything lovey-dovey and slushy as “Valentine’s Month” is finally over.

I’m now going to explain why it’s Man’s Month and how it came about. Firstly, DSTV started calling March “Man’s Month” within the last couple of years, and adjusted their TV programming to reflect it with plenty of action movies. This was to make up for a whole month of those poor saps otherwise known as married men, having to sit through romantic films, otherwise known as chick flicks, bored out of their mind.

March also comes from the name Mars, which is the Roman God of War, and men are warring, vicious, and violent by nature, don’t you know.

This is also quite appropriate because March has a hell of a line-up when it comes to games, and one of them actually happens to be God of War 3. In addition to that, there’s Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Supreme Commander 2, Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, Just Cause 2, Assassin’s Creed II for the PC, Metro 2033, and Command& Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight. There’s a whole clump of these titles arriving on the 16th of March or so, right in the middle of the month, and more or less the Ides of March (I think it’s actually the 15th, but who cares), when Julius Caesar was murdered. Very manly.

On another note, the public holidays this month are all named after males. There’s St. David’s day (today), and there’s the much more well-known St. Patrick’s Day. Not to mention this month is the male equivalent of Valentine’s Day: Steak and BJ day. If you don’t know what that is, just google it, and you’ll see.

And hell, while we’re at it, my birthday is in this month. And it’s the beginning of Fall or Autumn, one of the best seasons of the year.

So, there’s a lot of reasons why March is one of the best months of the year, especially if you’re a man.

Just Cause 2 for PC Won’t Support Windows XP

JC2

I find it quite funny that although this is all over the internet just lately, it’s actually old news. Square Enix confirmed last year that Just Cause 2 wouldn’t support Windows XP [1], seeing as the game is designed to take advantage of DirectX 10 technology, and we all know XP doesn’t support DirectX 10, only up to DirectX 9. Only Vista and Windows 7 do, in addition to DirectX 11.

"Just Cause 2 is an incredible looking title with one of the most richly detailed landscapes ever seen in a computer game, and to achieve this on the PC, the minimum specification includes a DirectX 10-compatible graphics card and operating system. The DirectX 10 and 10.1 APIs have allowed us to achieve an unparalleled level of visual quality, adding features and routines that simply would not be possible under DirectX 9. As a result, the graphical and performance gains have allowed us to create a game which raises the bar significantly in PC gaming and offers the player one of the most immersive and enjoyable gaming experiences."

And I’ve also noticed how on many forums and websites, those people who support Windows XP and haven’t upgraded to either Vista or Windows 7 are getting ridiculed now, because they won’t be able to play this game.

I for one still use Windows XP, even though I can easily get both Vista and Windows 7, but I haven’t made the switch yet, seeing as I’m waiting until I upgrade this year to do so. And even then I will likely still have a hard drive with Windows XP on it. I’m not really into Just Cause anyhow. I played the demo of the first game, but skipped buying it, and I’ll likely do the same with this one. Plenty of others out there that you can play on XP.

But it just goes to show that this is another step in the demise of the Operating System. Last year Microsoft reached the end of it’s free guaranteed service period for XP. Before that they tried to kill it with Windows Vista and failed. But I think that games are where it’s going to end up dying a slow (or quick) death, seeing as there will be more games like Just Cause 2 that won’t support XP, only Vista and Windows 7 (or just Windows 7), as they move on to newer, better technology, and that will see most of us switching to Windows 7. Not much of a hassle, but there you have it.

There have of course been other titles that have gone with later OSs, but this is just the latest one, and one big game that probably many are looking forward to.

Remember when games would support XP and 2000 with Windows 9X tagging along on the System Requirements? Then Windows 9X went out, then Windows 2000, and it looks the same way for XP now.
