Max Payne 3 Delayed, Possibly to Slip into 2011

max-payne-3

“Sorry guys. Couldn’t make the party.” Bloody loser.

The latest financial results from Take-Two Interactive suggest that Max Payne 3, which was due for a release in 2010, has now been delayed yet again, with the publisher saying within that "the launch of Max Payne 3 has been moved out of fiscal 2010."

The game, in development at Rockstar Vancouver, was initially meant for a late 2009 release, before being delayed to 2010.

CEO Ben Feder:

“While we do not take the movement of any title lightly, our recent success with Red Dead Redemption illustrates the importance and the benefit of giving a title the time it needs in order to fulfil its potential in the marketplace. The team at Rockstar is focused on making this the best experience in interactive entertainment.”

The title does not appear in the company’s 2010 fiscal year, which ends on the 31st of October, and this means that it could see a very late Q4 release, but most likely it will make 2011 instead, according to some.

By the time the game gets out, it will be going on a decade since the last game, Max Payne 2, was released. The first game in the series came out in 2001.

Red Dead Redemption in Local Stores Friday, the 21st of May

Red Dead I saw an advert on Vuzu either before, during, or after The Verge aired live last night. I can’t remember when, but it showed Red Dead Redemption, and it had a big bold date slapped on the screen at the end which read “21 May 2010”.

Then as I was going through my feeds, I saw that this is indeed the date that the game will be arriving in local stores in SA: Friday, 21 May, 2010 – which is today. Megarom confirmed this to LazyGamer.

Reportedly, if you have preordered the title, then you might have a problem getting it on this exact date due to the Icelandic volcano, but you’ll have to take it up with the retailer.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Disappears into 2011

GRFSskull

It’s not really that surprising, but news has been broken that Ghost Recon: Future Soldier has been pushed back into 2011.

The game’s existence was rumoured last year or so, and only officially announced within the last few months.

It was originally scheduled for a release for sometime near the end of this year, but according to G4tv, the game’s been purposely held back to avoid the competitive market at the time of the year [Call of Duty, Medal of Honor]. It’ll see a release in Q1 2011.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot:

"Due to a very competitive environment, we decided to move the game out of the Christmas quarter, and into the March quarter. It will also provide additional time to our development teams to realize their vision."

I for one don’t really like to see games that are announced, released in the same year, so I think it’s not a bad idea if it’s pushed back a few months. It ensures more of a quality product, I would think. Also not every game is bunched into the same quarter, so you get games coming out in all parts of the year, so we don’t suffer from “drought”.

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Releasing in July

sc2a

Damn it! quite a few games have had release dates announced just recently. The most notable ones are Rage, scheduled for next year, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II – for October. Not to mention the Black Wii; coming in May.

Another game that has just gotten a release date is that of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. Blizzard says that the game should be out all over the world on July 27, 2010, for PC and Mac. No console versions I’m afraid.

Mike Morhaime, CEO, cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment:

“We’ve been looking forward to revisiting the StarCraft universe for many years, and we’re excited that the time for that is almost here. Thanks to our beta testers, we’re making great progress on the final stages of development, and we’ll be ready to welcome players all over the world to StarCraft II and the new Battle.net in just a few months.”

This is has been said by many to just be a thumbsuck, as Blizzard has a reputation for not committing to release dates. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the first in a planned trilogy of games, with a Zerg campaign, Heart of the Swarm, and a Protoss campaign, Legacy of the Void, arriving later on.

Rage gets a Release Window, New Screenshots, Similar to Borderlands?

On this day: 5 May 2010 - May Day; 5 May 1992 – Wolfenstein 3D

rage All has been quite on the subject of Rageid Software’s first real developed game since Doom 3, and the first original IP since Quake.

But some news hit recently about the post-apocalyptic themed title, and it was concerning a release date.

Bethesda, the publisher says that the game should be out next year. In other words, 2011. For a while there we were expecting it to come this year. All the versions of the game – PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 – will be released simultaneously.

Tim Willits of id Software gave reasons why the title would not see 2010:

“Because we haven’t even hit alpha on this thing yet. But we’re working very hard and we’re getting close to that. But it’s important that we get this right. There’s nothing worse than pushing something out before it’s ready.

And the great thing about Bethesda and Zenimax is the executive management has the faith in us to give us the resource that we need to do the right game. Because, trust me, it would be horrible if we were to release it and it was bad.

As you saw, it’s running well on the 360. There are some graphical things that John’s working through, that he’ll get fixed. But the engine’s pretty solid.”

There was also talk about the fact – and I’ve thought this for some time – that Rage looks quite similar to Borderlands. I also thought Fallout 3 as well, seeing as some claim that’s the game that clinched the deal between id Software and Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax, last year.

But the Design Director on the game, Matt Hooper, stepped in to give his take:

"I can see fans drawing comparisons -- and people naturally want to draw parallels between existing things -- but no, we're not just making another 'Doom' here. It's something new for us."

Rage is not a procedural landscape with heavy RPG elements and a billion weapons. It's a very crafted, focused, action shooter with a level of attention to detail that's just off the charts."

We knew we wanted to have vehicles, and that we could make a kick-ass shooter, so the two came together in a very natural way for the team."

We've got a finely crafted weapons, really creative engineering items like deployable turrets and remote controlled bombs. It's all about creating a rich universe to use the array of weapons and options at the player's disposal."

It's not a bad thing that people draw comparisons. I just hope that people get more information and see demos and really realize what makes Rage so unique. Even if this post-apocalyptic wasteland seems familiar at first."

In addition to all this, there’ve been some new screenshots released for the game as well.

RageaRageb RagecRaged Ragee

By the way, if you local SA gamers, or those in the UK even, happen to watch GameFace on Tuesdays, last night you would have heard from Julia Hardy that they will doing a feature on the game sometime soon.

Eyjafjallajökull Volcano Affecting Video Game Release Dates

Eruption2010eyja If you’ve been reading the news or listening on TV, chances are you’ve seen or heard something about this volcano in Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull, that was dormant for nearly 200 years, and how it’s affected air travel in Europe, with planes not risking flying and getting all that volcanic ash clogging up their engines and so on.

It’s obvious when you think about it, but this is also affecting video game releases in Europe, the UK, and down here in SA, even. Quite a number of titles have been delayed reportedly, including Dead to Rights: Retribution, God of War Collections, and Scene it? Twilight, all originally scheduled for this month, but now possibly delayed until next month or at least when the dust settles, or ash clears, more appropriately.

Kotaku Australia also claims there are delays there too. And in Iceland, where the Volcano is actually situated, there are concerns for Icelandic game development studios, such as CCP, who made EVE Online.
Thanks for all your hard work, Lazygamer.

Mafia II Box Art Revealed, Release Date Confirmed

MafiaIIa Mafia II gets a bit of news lately, as the box art for the game has been revealed, which you can see to the right.

Some say the Mafia I cover art was better.

Anyway, the game has been scheduled for an August 24, 2010 release date in North America, and August 27 in other countries worldwide.

It will be available for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, and there’s all ready talk of DLC packs after release, as is the case with many games post-2008.

Release the Payload: Bad Company 2, Supreme Commander 2 [Major Releases]

             Bc2 SC2

Today marks the release in North America of the much anticipated Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Unlike the first game, this one will be making an appearance on the PC as well as the consoles, which got the first game too (lucky s@ds).

This game is also said to be ditching much of the humour seen in the first game, and taking a more serious approach.

I’ve said it time and time again: this game is looking good, and I actually can’t wait to play it. And that’s how it’s been with most other Battlefield titles. Looking at the reviews so far, it looks as though that excitement is way more than justified.

I saw something the other day which might interest you by the way. This game looks as though it’s going to be quite a gun fanatic’s paradise, not unlike Modern Warfare 2, and MTV Multiplayer had a list on their blog the other day which detailed a whole bunch of weapons and what it would take to unlock them. Just looking at this list made me salivate, seeing as all the favourites are there: the M16A2 Assault rifle, the M249 Light Machine Gun, and more.

Another game that might interest some is the sequel to Supreme Commander, Supreme Commander 2, no less. It’s an RTS title that takes place 25 years after the first expansion to the first game. I know why I don’t sound particularly enthused about this title: it’s because Command& Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight will be out this month.

I don’t know if I’ll be bothered with this one. The reviews say it’s quite good.

Borderlands: Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC out Today for Xbox 360

GK
The third DLC pack for Borderlands, Secret Armory of Generally Knoxx, should be out today for the Xbox 360 and available on Xbox Live Marketplace, costing at 800 MS points. A release for the Playstation 3 and PC versions are coming on Thursday, the 25th of February, and should sell for $9.99[1].

Included features in this DLC pack: level cap raised to 61 [2], new locations, about 30 new enemies, new weapons, a new weapon class, improved AI, and new vehicles.

It was previously thought that the level cap would be raised to 50, but apparently a press release from 2K has confirmed that it is 61. They were also rumours that the game might not be released today, but I read just now that the DLC is “still on” for today, despite speculation.

You can check out this info and more over at the Borderlands wikia page.

Release the Payload: Aliens vs. Predator [Major Releases]

Aliens_vs_Predator_coverToday, the 16th of February, marks the day that Aliens vs. Predator comes out. It’s the long awaited reboot of the franchise, and the first major AvP game since AvP 2, which was released sometime in late 2001 – and that one wasn’t even by Rebellion, but by Monolith.

Rebellion was responsible for the first game, which was tons of fun, perhaps a little short and linear in my opinion, but still – it was considered a great that rivalled games like Quake II and Unreal in its time, even graphically.

The United States will get a hold of AvP today, with the UK version coming later on in the week, on Friday the 19th. The Aussie version will be on the 18th.

So far opinions on the game are mixed. There’s apparently been some negative reviews and some positive. Some consider it an average game. But those are the critics, and we know what they’re like. Besides, those reviews seem to be for the console versions primarily. Now it’s released, I guess we’ll get to find out for ourselves.

You can pick up Aliens vs. Predator for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 on Amazon if you haven’t all ready. There are even special Hunter editions for the console versions.

Otherwise the only alternative if you’re looking to download it via digital distribution sites would be Steam, seeing as others like Direct2Drive have boycotted it because of its branding as a SteamWorks title.

Release the Payload: BioShock 2, Dante’s Inferno

image image

Well, BioShock 2 should be out today, and will no doubt thrill a lot of people. Reviews so far indicate that the game is a successful and worthy sequel to the original.

The game is supposed to be out today, the 9th of February, in North America, but I was listening on The Verge the other night, and Pippa said it would be out in South Africa on the 11th, which is Thursday. She also talked about some competition coming to The Verge, where there would be some giveaway of a BioShock 2 Collector’s Edition sometime. So make sure to watch The Verge this week, and get the details.

The Verge appears on Vuzu, Channel 123 on DSTV, and to win these competitions you usually have to SMS or text from your Vuzu account online to stand a chance.

You can order BioShock 2 on Amazon for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. You can also get the game at Direct2Drive, and the offer is still on where you can get both BioShock 2 and BioShock 1 and save 10%, but I doubt it'll last long.

Another game that releases today for consoles in America is Dante’s Inferno, although other territories like  Europe and Australia should all ready have it. Reviews for this game have been lukewarm to good, with critics saying it’s really just a God of War clone and doesn’t bring much originality to the table, but it’s still worth playing if you’re a fan of the genre.

You can pick up Dante’s Inferno from Amazon for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Portable.

Release the Payload: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat [New Releases]

        SCoPSTOWKC

At the beginning of the week I had a post up about all the games that would be released this week, and this is just a follow up post detailing worthwhile games that should be released today (they aren’t always).

Today sees the release of a game I’ve been dying to get since I finished Stalker:Clear Sky for the second time last year: Stalker: Call of Pripyat.

Despite some interest, I can’t help but feel that this one has been overlooked slightly because of the following titles. I guess if you’re an MMO freak, or a console person you won’t like CoP seeing as it’s a PC exclusive. By the way, the European (UK, Scandinavia, and Italy) and Aussie versions will follow later this week, on the 5th, and I’ve even read that the game will be released in Greece too, and the publisher will be hell-tech.

Also out today is White Knight Chronicles and Star Trek Online.

You can get the following games from Amazon (check my Amazon aStore to save time) and Direct2Drive if you haven’t all ready.

AAA’s Pick of the Week: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

The PC certainly has the best when it comes to number and selection of games this week. The title was released in most of Europe last year, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat has finally come to the rest of us. By the way, doesn’t the box art remind you somewhat of Half-Life: Opposing Force? It should be out on the 2nd of February, which is this Tuesday.

Then there’s also Star Trek Online in its different versions, as well as The Sims 3 High-End Loft Stuff.

As for the consoles. Not much, I’m afraid.

Metro 2033 Release Date Confirmed, Limited Edition, No Pre-release Demo

Metro2

This is one of the games I’m looking forward to most in Q1 2010. On Metro 2033’s twitter account, it was revealed that the game would be released in the US on the 16th of March, the Oz version on the 18th, and the European version on the 19th.

I noticed something about March 16th. In addition to the whole of Q1 being crowded, March 16th also marks the date that the PC version of Assassin’s Creed II will be released, as well as God of War III.

There will also be a limited edition version of the game, which will include the automatic shotgun as an added weapon and as well as four art cards. but the bad news in all this is that there won’t be a demo for this title. But it looks as though it’s going to be good enough for your money anyhow, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

And they’ve also confirmed among other things on their twitter account that there is no multiplayer in Metro 2033.

Crysis 2 to Come out in Late 2010 or Early 2011

image

Crysis 2 has been known about for some time, but since it made an appearance PlayStation: The Official Magazine recently, there’s been a lot of fanfare. We now know that the game will take place in an urban environment, namely New York City.

But the release date has been leaked for the game, and it suggests that it will be released in late 2010 or early 2011. Not too long ago they were saying “between April 1 2010, and March 31, 2011”.

Assassin’s Creed II PC Details: Release Date, System Specifications, DLC Inclusive

ac11

I don’t know why everyone’s making a fuss of this “new” release date for Assassin’s Creed II. The official word is that it’s March 16th, 2010. But I’ve known that for some time now, at least unofficially, and so have you, probably. If you didn’t, now you do.

Another interesting thing about the PC version of AC2 is that the DLC packs, “Battle of Forli” and “Bonfire of the Vanities”, which were cut out of the game and are being sold to console owners (which is low, low, low, as I’ve said before) are going to be included in the PC release! Just as I predicted, and it’s the right thing to do. So PC owners don’t have to pay for the DLC packs. They come included, just so you know.

The game will be sold as a retail and digital download version. The digital version’s price is quite steep, at $59.99. Also available for digital download only is the Black Edition, which is a few dollars extra. There’s supposedly no word on what’s included in the pack, but I have a feeling that because I’ve seen some mention of this Black Edition before, that it may well give you additional clothes for Ezio to play dress up in. I’m not sure, I just think it is.

As for the System Specifications:

Minimum Requirements:

OS: Windows XP (32-64 bits) /Windows Vista (32-64 bits)/Windows 7 (32-64 bits)Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHZ or AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4GHZ
Memory: 1.5 GB Windows XP / 2 GB Windows Vista - Windows 7
Video Card: 256 MB DirectX 9.0–compliant card with Shader Model 3.0 or higher (see supported list)
Sound Card: DirectX 9.0 –compliant sound card
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0
DVD-ROM: DVD-ROM dual-layer drive
Hard Drive Space: 8 GB
Peripherals Supported: Keyboard, mouse, optional controller

Recommended:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.6 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ or better
Video Card: GeForce 8800 GT or ATI Radeon HD 4700 or better
Sound: 5.1 sound card
Peripherals: Keyboard, mouse, joystick optional (Xbox 360 Controller for Windows recommended)

Supported Video Cards at Time of Release:

Heavy Rain now has a Release Date

If it’s one thing that’s being talked about a lot, it’s Heavy Rain – a PS3 exclusive “video game”. David Cage, the director on the project, is in two minds over whether it should be labelled as a game or not. Of course those who have suggested it’s a collection of quick-time events were subsequently whacked on the quiet.

Graphically, the game looks quite impressive, but I don’t know about the gameplay. Maybe a bit slow-paced from what I’ve seen. Anyhow, I guess I’ll never know seeing as the game isn’t available on PC or Xbox 360.

Anyway, the game now has a release date: the 23rd of February in America, with other countries following on the 24th and the 26th, and it can be pre-ordered from Amazon.
