Ever Noticed How Clint Eastwood Sounds Like a Ghoul From Fallout 3 Nowadays?

                                 They even look similar. Damn…

Clint Eastwood has never been known for having anything but a deep, raspy, even gravelly voice. But as he’s gotten older, like in Gran Torino, which I saw the other night, I couldn’t help but think that Clint Eastwood reminds me of two different video game character voices.

One would be that of the male Ghouls, basically like Zombies, from Fallout 3. And the other would be the Dunmer, or Dark Elves, from The Elder Scrolls series, particularly Morrowind, I’m thinking. This is probably because it’s likely the same voice actor, since both game were made by Bethesda.

The guy can’t help it. He is old and all now [nearly eighty now], and I’ve enjoyed his films over the years, especially Gran Torino. But who wouldn’t want to see Clint doing some voice work for the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls game before he’s gone for good?

Have a listen to this clip I recorded from Gran Torino – some of the best bits – and see, or hear, and tell me what you think. While you’re listening, just picture Gob or some Ghoul from Fallout 3. I would’ve gotten a clip of one the Ghouls as well for a comparison, but I didn’t get around to it. I uninstalled the game you see.

Apocalypse Then- The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

Developers: Bethesda Softworks

Publishers: Bethesda Softworks

Series: The Elder Scrolls

Engine: XnGine
Platforms: MS-DOS

Release dates: 31 August, 1996

Genres: RPG

On this day in gaming, in 1996, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall was released.

Daggerfall is the second game in the
Elder Scrolls series, and is often considered by some to be the best in the franchise. The game, interestingly, has the largest game world, although most of it was randomly generated. The game also has six different endings.

The game was released as freeware this year by Bethesda, the game's developers.

There's also a source port for the game, originally meant for MS-DOS, called DaggerXL which will eventually allow people to play the game on modern systems.

You can pick up The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall for free here if you want to play a classic. Otherwise you can also try Arena (also free), Morrowind, or Oblivion

DaggerXL- a Daggerfall Source Port in the Works

I came across something interesting for a change yesterday on TTLG.com, and that was something called DaggerXL.

DaggerXL is a source port for Daggerfall, the second game in The Elder Scrolls series, which was made freeware recently by Bethesda. DaggerXL was started recently, like in July this year or so, soon after the freeware release.

I got Daggerfall off of a NAG cover DVD recently, and tried to get it working with DosBox. I installed it, but couldn’t manage to get it to work. I usually don’t like messing around with DosBox, it must be said. It’s a good idea, don’t get me wrong, but as the DB team themselves say, if you can find a source port, then rather use that, as using DosBox doesn’t always provide the best experience. Besides, a source port will naturally look and run a lot nicer on our modern systems, and I was convinced that it would only be a matter of time before someone undertook this as a project.

So, I am quite interested in this source port then, and word has it that work is speeding along quite nicely. I’d like to get a hold of a version sometime soon, as I hear that Daggerfall is arguably the best in the series of TES games, and I, like a lot of people, haven’t played it…yet. Hell, there are some people who haven't played Morrowind or Oblivion. I'm glad I'm not one of those weirdos. lol

You can check out the DaggerXL site, a wordpress blog, here.

Apocalypse Then- The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Worker's Day (holiday)

On this day in gaming, in 2002, Morrowind was released. It is the third major game in the Elder Scrolls series by Bethesda, and used the Gamebryo engine which is still used by games today, like Oblivion and Fallout 3, among many others.

There were two expansions for it, Bloodmoon and Tribunal, one of which introduced the player to the Dark Brotherhood, the opposition to the Morag Tong, which was further enlarged upon in Oblivion, the game’s sequel.

Apocalypse Then- TES IV: Oblivion& S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

On this day, in 2006 and 2007 respectively, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl was released.

Oblivion is an excellent game, and it gathered a big following of people who sought to improve it by adding custom made items and mods that made the game more challenging. Oblivion is the sequel to The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, a great game in its own right.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is like a more modern form of Oblivion, except it’s foreign, having been developed in Ukraine. It was buggy, the translation sucked, and yet it was the start of something incredible: exploring the vaunted Zone of Chernobyl in 2011, 25 years after the infamous Chernobyl Incident. It became a hit despite its shortcomings.

It was followed in 2008 by S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, which promised a lot, but came up as an even buggier game, with not a heck of a lot of new stuff to offer. It acted as a prequel to the events in Shadow of Chernobyl. There are rumours of a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 3 that have been circulating around the internet for about 3 or 4 months now at least.

What I find so funny, is that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was originally going to have Oblivion in its subtitle. It was going to be named S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost.
