Maximum Hype: Crysis 2 Information Overload –Trailer, Plot Details

Cry2

Over the past few days, there’s been an overload of information on Crysis 2, so much that I couldn’t handle posting separate posts about everything. I’m just one man here you know.

I much prefer little leaks of info every now an again, but Crysis 2 has blown up.

I decided to do a mash up of all the best information that’s been online so far. I’ve noticed that other blogs with little manpower have done the same, or else they just provide a list of links to blogs which have covered all the stories.

Last week, a trailer was shown in Times Square for Crysis 2, and now there’s an extended trailer on the net too. It’s called "The Wall", and was rendered real time in CryEngine 3. You can watch it below. The song is by Polly Scattergood, called “New York New York”.

Author Richard Morgan will be handling the story of Crysis 2, even commenting on Modern Warfare 2 being a “big disappointment”. Some more information has been unveiled to add more to what we all ready know about the game: that it takes place in New York City in 2023, 3 years after the events of the first game, and you have to fight off an alien invasion.

“In Crysis 2, the aliens have returned with a full invasion force bent on nothing less than the total annihilation of mankind. In New York, terrifying alien invaders stalk the streets and a nightmare plague strikes down the city’s myriad inhabitants with brutal epidemic speed. The city’s systems are in chaos, its streets and skyline are smashed and in flaming ruin. Neither paramilitary law enforcement nor the might of the US military machine can stand against the invaders, and all who choose not to flee are dead men walking. Just to survive in this maelstrom of death will require technology beyond anything any modern soldier has ever seen. One man will inherit that means to survive. You alone must wield the combat technology of Nanosuit 2, and make the last stand to save humanity from destruction in the urban jungle that is New York City.”

It’s also been said that Nomad, the player character from Crysis, as well as Prophet, the squad leader, will reappear in this title. And there’s word that Nomad will keep being mistaken for Prophet throughout the game. Prophet all but disappeared in the first game when he set off on a one man suicide mission to fight the aliens.

Crysis 2 is scheduled for a “holiday 2010” release which likely means Q4 2010 or September to December, but probably more towards the latter. The development is being handled by Crytek Frankfurt, with Crytek UK doing the multiplayer, and the game will be available on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. Consoles are something new for the Crysis series, seeing as the original game, Crysis, as well as Crysis Warhead, were PC exclusives.

Lots of Crysis 2 Screenshots [Screenshots]

Everybody’s raving about these new shots showing off Crysis 2.

The fact is that these aren’t the only shots of the game on the internet. You can also find a whole lot of high-resolution ones on a page that takes ages to load over here. The ones above are just part of about sixteen shots in the gallery.

Crysis 2 to Feature the Big Five… Things You’ll Remember Forever

crysis2

Crysis 2 was featured in Edge magazine recently, and details of the game have leaked on to the net. The game is reportedly going to feature five big memorable things that will stay with you long after you’ve featured the game.

We all know that the game will take place in New York city now, and that the player will have access to the Nanosuit 2. One of the things talked about is that this isn’t just the New York seen plenty of times in movies and other games. This is going to be Crytek’s own “unique New York”, set three years after the first Crysis, and thirteen years from now, making it 2023, I would guess.

They also mentioned in the interview, destruction and scarring of the environment. Could this be like Red Faction or F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin?

Nanosuit 2 will naturally see some upgrades, like X-ray vision, Tactical mode, and bullet deflection. X-ray vision sounds good, and come to mention it so does Tactical mode, seeing as they claim it enhances your hearing in the game so you hear even the slightest of sounds. And it also improves your HUD capabilities.

In any case, there seems to be a lot of “unique” being thrown around. Some claim that New York isn’t entirely original, seeing as some games like Max Payne took place in the city, as well as Turning Point, but not a hell of a lot others.

The game is expected to release by the end of the year, somewhere in Q4, 2010, likely December, hopefully in time for Christmas.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to Have Optical Camouflage

Ghostrecon

Presidents Day

You remember the teaser trailer for GRFS released recently? Well, there was one part which looked pretty cool, and that was a squad of ghosts materializing out of nowhere.

This is what Ubisoft calls Optical Camo, and despite it seeming as though it’s a blatant copy of what was seen in Predator over twenty years ago, or more recently in Crysis, Ubi claims that this among other things is based on real technology that is currently being researched and developed.

Kimi Matsuzaki, otherwise known as UbiKimi on twitter (probably), had this to say:

“Despite popular belief, we didn’t design this after a certain bespectacled wand-wielding boy’s accoutrement. We are, and remain, loyal to the Ghost Recon brand value of authenticity.

In general Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is based on the very real Future Soldier Initiative 2030, which is a U.S. Army R&D program run by the US Army Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center. Optical camo, like other technologies in Future Solider, is a near-future reality, and this is why we chose to include it in GRFS.

We plan to discuss our references and inspirations in the coming months, so that you can see that we’ve done our homework in order to bring you a plausible future war scenario. In terms of optical camo, there are actually numerous research and military programs on it.”

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier should be out this year for the Xbox 360 and PS3, with a PC version coming later on, and handheld console versions planned as well.

By the way: how cool would it be to get a hold of that Optical Camo tech in real life one day?

Crysis 2 due out in Q4 2010

image

So, we’ve heard the big breaking news about Crysis 2, and EA keeps trying to narrow down the release window. First it was 2010 or 2011, then 2010, now it’s Q4 2010, which is October to December.

It’s funny, because this isn’t really any more specific to me than the other predictions.

Crysis 2 will use the CryEngine 3, and will be available on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. The game’s setting is New York, instead of the tropical islands like in the original. The game is being developed by Crytek, who worked on the first game and Far Cry before it.

Crysis 2 to Come out in Late 2010 or Early 2011

image

Crysis 2 has been known about for some time, but since it made an appearance PlayStation: The Official Magazine recently, there’s been a lot of fanfare. We now know that the game will take place in an urban environment, namely New York City.

But the release date has been leaked for the game, and it suggests that it will be released in late 2010 or early 2011. Not too long ago they were saying “between April 1 2010, and March 31, 2011”.

Crysis 2 set in New York City, Alien Invasion

C2 I all ready predicted this long ago, while watching some tech demos for CryEngine 3, and there were some scenes of what definitely looked like Crysis 2, and it was set in an urban environment.

Well, the cover of PlayStation: The Official Magazine’s March edition confirms this by having the phrase "Aliens invading NYC? No problem! Blast their faces off with the Nanosiut 2.0!" on the front, and in addition to this, Gary Steinman, the editor-in-chief of the magazine tweeted about it:

"Crysis 2 set in NYC!!"

I guess it should have been expected. Look at it this way: I got some major Predator vibes while playing Crysis. This was mainly due to the cloak ability that you can enable within your nanosuit interface, and you blend in with the environment.

So, Predator was set in the jungle on an island, as was Crysis, but Predator 2 was set in the city, and now so is Crysis 2. The only thing to worry about here is that Predator rocked although it was a bit cheesy in the beginning, it got better as it went along, while Predator 2 came off as just laughable – quite a good comedy actually. I hope this doesn’t happen to Crysis 2. But let’s face it: who wants to spend even more time in the same setting? I dunno…

Crysis in New York City. So besides facing the aliens and stuff, there will no doubt be your civilians, and military, the police, and perhaps the odd bum, wino, or knife-wielding psychotic who “wants your suit or your life” to deal with.

Crysis was a PC exclusive, while Crysis 2 will make an appearance on Xbox 360 as well as the PS3, and it should come out sometime in Electronic Arts’ next fiscal year (April 1, 2010 - March 31, 2011).

People who buy the issue of PTOM will likely scan some pages and put some stuff up on the internet. So we’ll get to see and read more about the game soon. PC Gamers all ready seem to be upset that the game isn’t a PC exclusive. Now come on guys, just be glad we’ll be able to play it all.

I’m not 100% convinced it has much chance of making this year. Maybe not as convinced as I was last year. Next year’s looking better.

By the way, don’t you think that nanosuit looks pretty cool? On the outside it does anyway. Imagine the little, scrawny person on the inside. Can’t say I’m really noticing any differences from the first one, at least externally. Maybe there’s more improvements as regards the suit’s abilities. I hope you can upgrade them, and make the damn cloak last longer.

Yowl! Cat-Life: a Mod for Half-Life

catlife

I came across this on RPS. They seem to post about these mods. The last one was a cool mod for Crysis, called DeLorean Time Machine. This time it’s about Cat-Life, a mod for Half-Life which allows you to play as a cat.

“Cat-Life is an original concept for Half-Life and the GoldSource engine.Players will experience the Black Mesa incident from the view of a stranded pet cat.

Using claws and teeth and the natural prowess of a cat, players will travel through the bowels of Black Mesa.Xenian beasts roam the corridors and laboratories and... surprise... cats are conveniently bite-sized for those in-between-meal munchies.”

This is so weird, because it’s the game I’ve always thought about, but knew that nobody would ever venture there. I mean, making a game with a cat as the main protagonist! But, here it is, and strangely using HL1 instead of HL2 for the mod.

I have a cat, and I once attempted to make a point and click style game in AGS involving the cat. Hell, I once thought about how cool it would be to have Rainbow Six, except instead of counter terrorists, put dogs in there as they take down tangos, which be the cats.

Anyhow, back to Cat-Life, the demo for this mod is out now. Instead of using a crowbar, the main weapon is the cat’s paw with sharp claws and such.

The main consensus, or theory, is that the cat in this mod is the one who is mentioned in Half-Life 2 when Alyx was about to enter the teleporter in order to reach Black Mesa East.

Isaac Kleiner: Right you are. This is a red letter day, we'll inaugurate the new teleport with a double transmission.

Barney Calhoun: You mean it's working? For real this time? Because... I still have nightmares about that cat.

Alyx Vance: What cat?

Isaac Kleiner: Now, now, there is nothing to be worried about, we have made major strides since then, major strides.

Alyx Vance: [more anxiously] What cat?

Far Cry 3 in Development According to Ubisoft Guy

I guess this shouldn't come as a shock. We knew it was going to happen eventually. In fact many have expected it to happen, seeing as Far Cry 2 had almost absolutely nothing to do with its "prequel". People want a proper sequel that ties in with Far Cry, which was one 0f 2004's best games.

Well, like I was saying, Far Cry 3 is in development, and according to Kevin Shortt, the Ubisoft guy alluded to in the header, a scriptwriter for the studio, it's looking good.

While talking to
Official PlayStation Magazine, and when asked if he was working on the title he replied, "No I'm not, but I know the team are (sic) and what I've seen looks pretty exciting."

From talk on Far Cry 3 before, it's being said that the title may once again be based in Africa, like Far Cry 2, or possibly even Antarctica. Now that's a place rarely covered in my opinion, if you thought Africa wasn't featured in games much.

Patrick Reading, the producer of Far Cry 2, had the following to say a while back:

"There are still things we want to do with the African setting, and I think it's safe to say we'll continue to explore it."

The game will also supposedly use the Dunia engine, which was used in Far Cry 2- not the CryEngine or CryEngine 2, as was thought by some. Dunia is essentially a modified CryEngine 2. I guess they want Crysis 2 to debut with the CryEngine 3.

Crytek Files for New Trademarks, Possibly has a Medieval Era Game in the Works

Crytek, developer of Far Cry, Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Crysis Wars and the CryEngine technology behind them, has filed for new trademarks: Gface, Carvatar, Kingdoms, and Warface.

A recent tech demo of the new CryEngine 3 has seen medieval battles going on in it, and that makes me a little excited. I’d bet that the trademark of “Kingdoms” or "Warface" has something to do with the title or theme of this game if it ever is released one day. We could use more medieval themed games, especially of the first person genre. Ever since I saw an April Fool’s Day Joke last year in NAG magazine advertising a Battlefield 1342 game, I couldn’t help but think that it could actually work. Imagine multiplayer battles with swords, axes, maces, horses and long bloody fights…
