Alien Breed Evolution, Renamed Impact, Coming to Steam Today, Sequel in the Works

Alien_Breed_Impact

Alien Breed Evolution by Team 17, the makers of the original series back in 90’s along with the likes of Worms, came out last year for the Xbox 360 on XBLA. Nearly a year later, the PC is set to get a port of the game, but it’s been purposely renamed to Alien Breed: Impact. There’s word that the PS3 version will be named this as well. It’s good that the PC version will have more stuff than the XBLA one did, like upgradeable weaponry, co-op play, and a better campaign, naturally.

Martyn Brown, studio head:

“We’re always very keen to hear what our communities are saying about our titles and greatly consider feedback. For Alien Breed: Impact, it was great that we went back to the design and improved the game in many areas, meaning a much tighter gameplay experience for all.”

The game will be available to download off of Steam this week – today in fact: June 3rd. It retails for about $14.99 and if your pre-order it, you get 10% off that price, and a digital comic book - nice. There’s also a demo that you can grab off of there, as well as a trailer.

There’s also been word that a second game, called Alien Breed 2: Assault, is going to arrive sometime in the future, according to some ESRB listing. Right now, only listed for Xbox 360, the same thing is bund to happen where they port it to PC – perhaps a little sooner this time though.

Sega Classics Coming to PC Through Digital Distribution in June

ga

The Sega Genesis is regarded as one of the ultimate classics when it comes to gaming, and recently Sega has said that a number of the greatest hits to appear on the console are going to make an appearance soon on digital distribution outlets like Steam, and probably others too, like Direct2Drive.

One of these games will be Golden Axe. Hell, I remember playing that game a lot years ago. Others include Ecco The Dolphin, Sonic 3D Blast and Comix Zone – I remember that one too!

The PC versions of these games will arrive in early June this year [June the 1st actually], and will sell for as low as $2.99 each.

The Ultimate F.E.A.R. Collection now Available at Direct2Drive: 3 Games-in-1

      FEARFEARxptPerseus_Mandate

A few days ago, something hit Steam – and that was the entire original F.E.A.R. collection. This consists of F.E.A.R., F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point and F.E.A.R.: Perseus Mandate. All of these bundled cost just $9.99.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin and the Reborn DLC are not featured in this pack.

But I’ve learnt that this bundle isn’t exclusive to Steam anymore. You can also now get the  “F.E.A.R. Ultimate Shooter Collection” over at Direct2Drive, for the same price too. The download size is over 16 GBs though.

For the price, it’s worth it just for the first game. The expansions aren’t bad – especially Extraction Point - which was quite good actually. Of course these weren’t developed by Monolith like F.E.A.R., but Timegate Studios, so the storylines encountered in them aren’t canon, but then again, F.3.A.R, coming this year, isn’t being handled by Monolith either.

By the way, when I last played Extraction Point, it requires F.E.A.R. to be installed, but Perseus Mandate is a standalone expansion. Don’t know if this still applies in this pack.

Valve’s Portal is Free for PC and Mac until May 24

portalsteam Valve’s Mac supported version of Steam is out, and one of their most critically acclaimed titles next to Half-Life, Portal, is being offered completely free until May 24, 2010. This goes for both the PC and Mac versions of the title.

I’ve played it as part of the Orange Box years ago, and although yes, it had it’s good puzzle solving stuff going on, it was a bit short, and too be honest, a bit boring. I mean – no guns… no enemies to use said guns on? Come on!

Still, to get a game of this calibre for free is a good deal, and worth looking into if you need a less violent FPS.

Get Portal here or here.

Dark Void Zero Coming to the PC and iPhone

DarkVoidZero Dark Void was released for the PC earlier on this year, but also had a spin-off title called Dark Void Zero which was for the Nintendo DS only. But now it’s been revealed by Capcom that Dark Void Zero will be making its way to the iPhone as well as the PC, soon to be available on Steam – the digital distribution giant.

The game is set to come out on April 12, 2010, and the pricing for the games is said to be $3 for the iPhone version, and $5 for the PC version. Cheap, but then the game is a retro 8-bit styled title, and those who have played it said it’s most enjoyable, while Dark Void, it’s bigger brother, hasn’t done so well.

And although it won’t arrive at the same time, there are rumours that Xbox Live and PSN, for the Xbox 360 and PS3 [possibly PSP as well], might get the game too.

Just Cause 2 Demo Out, Title Supports SteamWorks

JCdemo

“Oh, the demo should be about… that big.”

Today, the 4th of March, should see the release of the Just Cause 2 demo for all platforms [1] – namely Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The demo is said by many to be huge, at 35 square miles, and major replayability for a demo.

On another note, just like some other major titles released last year and this year, like Modern Warfare 2 and Aliens vs. Predator, as well as Supreme Commander 2 and Napoleon: Total War, Just Cause 2 will support SteamWorks [2].

This won’t just mean that the game will likely only be available for download off of Steam, but also other features such as “matchmaking, automatic game updates, and downloadable content” will be handled by Steam. The console versions will no doubt be available off of Xbox Live and PSN.

It was also confirmed recently for the umpteenth time that the game will not support Windows XP, and therefore nor will it support DirectX 9. Just Cause 2 should be out later this month, on the 23rd of March.

New 2D Worms Game, Worms Reloaded, Coming to PC via Steam [Updated]

wormsarmageddon It’s amazing how this news has taken the internet by storm just lately. But it got me excited too.

Worms was easily one of my favourite franchises growing up. I remember playing several titles in the series, like Worms, Worms 2, Worms Armageddon, and Worms World Party.

Last year it was announced that Worms: Armageddon, considered by some to be the best in the series, before it went 3D, was made available on Xbox Live as Worms 2 Armageddon (they might just share a similar name – I haven’t played it so I wouldn’t know what it’s like to play). But even better news is that a port of this game will soon be on Steam for download to your PC.

But that’s not all! In addition to this, Team 17, developers of the Worms games, says that a new title in the series will be coming out soon, and on to Steam as well. This new title will be known as Worms: Reloaded.

Team 17 announced this on their twitter account:

“We are pleased to announce a new edition of 2D Worms for PC! “Worms Reloaded” is coming soon via Steam. Details & features to follow…”

Little is known of this Worms: Reloaded title, but the developers promise details, and that the game will arrive sooner rather than later. Some speculate that the might be a remake of the first game. The clue’s in the title. Or, in my opinion it could simply just mean that they’re going back to making 2D Worms games instead of the 3D ones, which some claim to dislike. They were different, too different… let’s put it that way. In any case, these two games coming to the PC, Reloaded in particular, is the first time in nearly ten years that a new 2D Worms title has been developed specifically for the PC. The last one was World Party, in 2001. All the others that have been released since then have been for consoles and handhelds. There were those 3D ones, but….

As for my favourite in the series, Armageddon and World Party were basically just improved versions of  Worms 2, which is likely the game that I played most over the years next to Worms Plus. Worms 2 no doubt had the best soundtrack: three of the songs were from The Offspring’s oft-considered best album, Smash – namely “Come Out and Play”, “Self-Esteem”, and the bloody awesome “Killboy Powerhead”.

By the way, Team 17 also says that in addition to these two worms games, one old and one new, a PC version of Alien Breed: Evolution will be coming to Steam sometime soon as well.

Update: It turns out that after some confusion and then a later clarification, Worms Reloaded is Worms 2: Armageddon. The PC port of this console game coming to Steam just has some extra stuff that the console one doesn’t, and so it has a different name to possibly reflect this.

Video Games Coming out This Week (02-21 – 02-27, 2010): Heavy Rain, Napoleon: Total War

NTW  HR HR_ps3_PKG_DL_01v2

Well, I don’t particularly see anything here that I want, so there’s no pick of the week, but no doubt it’s surprisingly quite a stacked up week for game releases.

The major game this week is no doubt the PS3 exclusive, Heavy Rain, which some say is going to revolutionize gaming, and some say it isn’t even a video game at all. But say it’s just a collection of quick- time events however, and David Cage will hunt you down and kill you. I’ve heard from many people that it does look beautiful, though.

By the way, there are two box shots above – one is the European version, and the other for the American one. The one in the middle, the European one, is better in my opinion.

Besides that there’s Napoleon: Total War for the PC which is SteamWorks title. This was announced by Sega, so you’ve been told… or warned, depending on how you see it.

Links as usual go through to Amazon, Steam, etc., to each game’s detail page where you can see more info on the title and pick up the game of your choice.

Metro 2033 Doesn’t Use X-ray Engine, Does Support SteamWorks

4347541100_d4b1e2363d

It was revealed recently in a big announcement that Metro 2033 would support DirectX 11 technology as well as 3D Vision, And several nice screenshots were there to prove it.

If you thought however that the game was too good looking to use the same engine and tech as STALKER… you’d be right. Metro 2033 developers, 4A Games, have put the rumours to rest that they used STALKER’s X-ray engine during the development of the title.

For a while, there have been rumours going around that Metro 2033 indeed used the X-ray engine, and this was even backed up by Sergey Grigorovic or GSC Game World, the STALKER developers. He claims it’s based on an early build of the X-ray engine. But some people who worked at the company and later left to join 4A Games, like Oles Shishkovtsov , say that isn’t the case, as he claims that the X-ray engine couldn’t handle the features in Metro 2033.

"There's no relationship. Back when I was working as lead programmer and technology architect on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. it became clearly apparent that many architectural decisions put into S.T.A.L.K.E.R. engine were great for the time when it was designed, but they just doesn't scale to the present day.

"The major obstacles to the future of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. engine were its inherent inability to be multi-threaded, the weak and error-prone networking model, and simply awful resource and memory management which prohibited any kind of streaming or simply keeping the working set small enough for (back then) 'next-gen' consoles.

When the philosophies of the engines are so radically different it is nearly impossible to share the code, the final answer is ‘no’. We do not have shared code with X-Ray, nor would it be possible to do so.”

Comparing the two titles, Metro 2033 may well look a lot prettier in my opinion. I do sense a bit of professional rivalry there though, to say the least.

The bad news for some people: Metro 2033 is going to support SteamWorks for the PC version of the game, just like Aliens vs. Predator and Modern Warfare 2.

That’ll likely mean that the only place you’ll be able to pick it up online via digital distribution will be Steam, seeing as other companies like D2D boycott SteamWorks titles. They might have to adapt though, seeing as they’ll start losing sales as more and more games start using this feature.

Metro 2033 should be out in the middle of next month for the PC and Xbox 360.

Release the Payload: Aliens vs. Predator [Major Releases]

Aliens_vs_Predator_coverToday, the 16th of February, marks the day that Aliens vs. Predator comes out. It’s the long awaited reboot of the franchise, and the first major AvP game since AvP 2, which was released sometime in late 2001 – and that one wasn’t even by Rebellion, but by Monolith.

Rebellion was responsible for the first game, which was tons of fun, perhaps a little short and linear in my opinion, but still – it was considered a great that rivalled games like Quake II and Unreal in its time, even graphically.

The United States will get a hold of AvP today, with the UK version coming later on in the week, on Friday the 19th. The Aussie version will be on the 18th.

So far opinions on the game are mixed. There’s apparently been some negative reviews and some positive. Some consider it an average game. But those are the critics, and we know what they’re like. Besides, those reviews seem to be for the console versions primarily. Now it’s released, I guess we’ll get to find out for ourselves.

You can pick up Aliens vs. Predator for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 on Amazon if you haven’t all ready. There are even special Hunter editions for the console versions.

Otherwise the only alternative if you’re looking to download it via digital distribution sites would be Steam, seeing as others like Direct2Drive have boycotted it because of its branding as a SteamWorks title.

Video Games Coming This Week (02/07 – 02/13, 2010): BioShock 2, Dante’s Inferno

bioshock 2

AAA’s Pick of the Week: BioShock 2

It’s finally here. One of the most hyped games for 2010 so far: BioShock 2. The title takes place ten years after the prequel and sees the player take on the role of a Big Daddy Prototype and use all new weapons, plasmids, and tonics too. And it’s just BioShock 2… not “BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams”.

Another game which has gotten a lot of attention for a long while is Dante’s Inferno, a game similar to God of War. That will be consoles only.

Other than that, there’s a Stargate game, which I didn’t even really know was coming, and Sins of a Solar Empire gets two addons.

Aliens vs. Predator Multiplayer Demo Out Today, Available on Steam for PC

avp5

There were rumours on the net this week (I remember reading about in on the 2nd) that the AvP demo would be coming out this week. There was promise of a demo quite a while back all ready.

Initially That Videogame Blog spotted that it would be released on Xbox Live this week, but it’s since been revealed that the demo will come out on all platforms including the Xbox 360, PC, and the PS3.

The catch? It’s multiplayer only, obviously and sadly meaning no singleplayer. It should be on Steam, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network as I’m typing this. The good news accompanying the announcement from Sega is that new screenshots and a trailer have been released as well. I’m going to have a look at those some time.

The demo is said to include one map from the game, with one game type, deathmatch, and all three species, the marine, the Xenomorph (Alien), and the Predator being playable.

So, it is a pre-release demo after all, just about two weeks before the full release, which should happen on the 16th of February, 2010.

Aliens vs. Predator to be a Steamworks Title

avp (2) I dreaded this as soon as I read it, because remember the outcry when it came to Modern Warfare 2? The game in addition to the retail versions, will also be sold on Steam, but it doesn’t stop there. Like other Steamworks titles, the game’s achievements and saved games will all be stored online.

And just like with Modern Warfare 2, Direct2Drive, Impulse, and GamersGate, the main competitors of Steam in the digital distribution game, are not selling the game. They boycotted MW 2 mainly because of its use of Steamworks, which they claim is a further attempt to monopolize the digital download industry.

This explains why I haven’t seen it in D2D’s product line when doing searches. All that crops up is result after result on Aliens vs. Predator comics, which some may find cool, anyway.

Oh, by the way, another title by the name of Napoleon: Total War… yeah, that’s a Steamworks title too, right there.

At the moment, places like Direct2Drive and Steam, among others, are taking preorders for the Bad Company 2, which will be released on the 2nd of March, 2010. TrailerBlazer: Aliens vs. Predator Heritage Trailer

Aliens vs. Predator: Heritage

On The Verge recently, they showed an Aliens vs. Predator dev diary of sorts which showed a lot of in-game footage. But not only was it in-game footage of the latest game by Rebellion, but there was also plenty of footage from 1999’s AvP, which some call “Aliens vs. Predator Classic” or “AvP Classic 2000” (this refers more to the Gold edition).

It was great seeing some of this, because at the time, more than ten years ago, it was considered to be cutting edge stuff, in graphics too. I once read that AvP could be compared to the id Tech 2, or Quake II, engine. I mean, the game featured beheading and dissection of enemies, and stuff, even before Soldier of Fortune came along and made it popular.

But seeing what the new AvP is like (what should we call this? AvP 2010?), graphics, technology, and gameplay wise, it looks as though it’s going to be a worthy addition to this popular series. Even though some say it’s been in development for just over two years, the one guy in the film claims that it was basically coming together, at least in their heads, since the last game (AvP Classic 2000).

By the way, I was reading the other day, that you can get AvP Classic or 2000 or AvP Classic 2000 (you get the idea) from Steam, the digital distribution kings. And it has widescreen support too. So, if you’ve tried getting the game to work on modern systems without much luck (I once read that nVidia was trying to sort out the problem with drivers), then this version should work on XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

Direct2Drive is not Selling Modern Warfare 2

It was revealed recently that Modern Warfare 2 is another awful Steamworks title, and Direct2Drive has stood up and said that Modern Warfare 2 will not be available for download at its online store. Other digital distribution outlets like Impulse and GamersGate have followed suit, and also won’t sell the game. It looks like Steam will be the only one that will have the game for sale.

D2D said it will make up for not selling the game by having another $5 off sale, this time on Activision titles, which includes Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2’s prequel, as well as almost Call of Duty title. I've just checked their catalogue, and even though
Modern Warfare 2 appears on it, it isn't for sale.

Jeez, all these announcements about Modern Warfare 2 lately. You’d think that the game is going to bomb, but there is no way in hell that it will. It’s almost like Infinity Ward, and Activision know that the game is going to be “one of the best selling games of all time”, and so they can get away with whatever they want, and people will still buy it, boycotts and petitions, or not.

At least Direct2Drive seems to have had enough of all the controversy surrounding the title, and has the b@lls to stand up to the man. I admire that. Now I wish the game would just be released so I don’t have to read this in my news feeds all the time. That’s doesn’t mean that people will stop whining about it though. I think those who play the singleplayer campaign will be relatively satisfied, where as the multiplayer peeps will be forever pi$$ed.

Video Games Coming Out in October 2009: 10/25 - 10/31

Picks of the Week: Borderlands, Painkiller: Resurrection

Okay, so the console versions came out last week, and now this week it's the PC's turn. Borderlands should be out this week. I saw a mini-review for the game on The Verge the other day, and it looks pretty damn good, I must say, despite the different art direction. And the other PotW is
Painkiller: Resurrection. I haven't played a Painkiller game for years, since the first one in 2004. This is a sequel to that game, a great deathmatch mainstay at one stage, and it hasn't even received that much marketing hype. It's just quietly slipped in here.

Infinity Ward Still Uses Id Tech with Modern Warfare 2, System Requirements, Steamworks

I was just reading this earlier on Big Download, and I was surprised, but I remember back years ago now. BD says that on the box of Modern Warfare 2, it says that the "game uses software" from id Software. Now, if you think back to the original Call of Duty, which was released back in 2003, the game used the id Tech 3, or Quake III, engine. So, it's interesting to see that this is still going on.

The system specs have also been revealed:

Windows Vista/XP
AMD 64 3200+ or Intel Pentium 4 3.0Ghz or better
16 GB free hard drive space / 512 MB RAM (XP) / 1 GB RAM (Vista)
Shader 3.0 or better 256 MB nVidia Geforce 6600GT / ATI Radeon 1600XT or better

Wow, 16 GB for an install. The biggest game I have at the moment on my system is probably The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, although technically that is two games.

And if you think that's bad, then Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition is going to blow you away. It's 24 GB! eek

Time to start freeing up space on my HD, I think.

And the last bit of news going around about Modern Warfare 2 is this: It will be a Steamworks title. Steamworks works with Steam. If you remember Half-Life 2, then you know what Steamworks is.

As thatvideogameblog states, and I quote:

"a Steamworks game means that to play the game, you have to have Steam on your computer, and your copy of the game will be tied to your Steam account. The game will auto update through Steam, will have Steam achievements, and use Steam’s anti cheat infrastructure. The game will also support the newly introduced Steam Cloud, which lets gamers store their save files and game configurations to Steam’s database, and will allow gamers easy access to them if needed."

This will probably mean more piracy of Modern Warfare 2, at least for the PC version. What I didn't like about this was that almost every journo/blogger that covered this was a pro-console one, and it's funny how even though they don't really care that much about the whole situation, the only reason they wrote about it was because they wanted to rub it in the faces of PC gamers. I could tell. Those dudes need a smack upside the head.

Not that I care that much...

The Dark Mod v 1.0 Released

I only talked about this the other day when I read an update on the official site of the mod, and when I followed a link from The Dark Mod discussion thread on the ttlg.com forum, I saw that it had indeed been released today! I thought it would take at least another two months or so.

The bad news: this sucker is 1.4 GB to download. That's more than twice as big as T2X was. The Dark Mod is free though, in a way.
BTW, I've read so far that to download the thing is a b*tch.

Anyhow, to play this mod, you're going to need Doom 3. Now stop whining- you can get it in a lot of places if you know where to look. There's Amazon and Steam. I managed to pick it up at BT Games for about R 100, 2 or 3 years ago. So if you look around, you might get a good deal. Doom 3 isn't a bad game either, so it will be worth it. You also need to get the 1.3.1 patch for Doom 3, last time I checked. See here for more installation notes and stuff.

And I will try to get NAG magazine to put this on one of their next cover DVDs, because as much as I want it, and I have data to spare at the moment, this is a bit too big.
