Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition Review

I forgot to post about it here, but I’ve working on a Fallout New Vegas review and managed to publish it. Lots of nice pictures to look at if you can’t be bothered with the text. You can read it here.

On a related note I also published a piece recently that talks about what would make Fallout 4 the best in the series.

Classic Game Collecting: Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate Edition

Recently I was looking at some games at a local store and happened upon Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate Edition. Now I’ve been looking for this for some time, and I was even under the distinct impression it wasn’t available in this country, so I gladly snatched that up for R199. I don’t mind paying that much for a game of that calibre, even if there is still a global economic crisis going on.

I have played Fallout New Vegas – in fact I’ve played it through twice. This Ultimate Edition does have all the available DLCs: Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road, plus two additional add on packs in Courier’s Stash and Gun Runners Arsenal.

I’ll likely play it and have a review up in the near future.

Now Playing - Fallout: New Vegas

FNVDespite the mixed reviews, the other day I purchased Fallout: New Vegas.

There was no way I was going to pass on it. I was interested in it whenever I saw pictures or watched a trailer of it.

This game, despite looking as though it could probably have been just nothing more than a mod for Fallout 3, was handled by Obsidian – a studio which consists of several guys who worked on the original Fallout games. The game goes back to the west coast this time, and takes place mainly in the Mojave, with locales such as what remains of Las Vegas being the main attraction. But, unlike Washington DC, the place seems to have been spared the same level of destruction. The surrounding towns though are a different story.

In my opinion, FNV is even more atmospheric than Fallout 3, and there are several little improvements and additions this time around. Of course, there are a number of bugs too – but luckily a have a couple of patches to help sort this out. Nevertheless, even then, I’ve come across a few annoying ones – mainly surrounding the companions.

ScreenShot4

In addition to the companions, you have other useful things such as a reloading bench where you can break down and make ammo, as well as campfires which help you create edible food stuffs from things you find out in the desert.

And the best part is you have more guns! And there’s quite a selection too: from the .357 Magnum, to the Service Rifle (M16), as well as numerous others. I was rather chuffed to see that there are now 9mm weapons, including a pistol to replace that horrid looking 10mm one, which still exists in this game. I just don’t want to use it.

Overall, I’m enjoying it so far. Great characters and missions in the game, and it really feels like the Wild West at times. Some people love FNV, and others hate it. I would fall in to the first camp. Despite its faults, I find it immensely enjoyable.

Fallout: New Vegas Box Art and Screenshots

boxes2

The box art for Fallout: New Vegas was released recently, and you can see it for each version of the game to the right.

People all over agree that Fallout 3’s box art was better. But this one is the final version, so there won’t be any changes. Just deal with it. The game inside the box should be a killer one anyway.

And there are some new screenshots for the game too:

Fallout: New Vegas Details, Collector’s Edition

fnvmayLast week there were a whole lot of Fallout: New Vegas previews and “first looks” that it was hard to sift through them all. All in all it was nothing we’d not heard of before.

Fallout: New Vegas will take place on the West coast of the former United States, or Capital Wasteland, rather than the Eastern Coast like in Fallout 3. It will however use the same engine as Bethesda’s title, but with a of of improvements. The player character will start off in Goodsprings Nevada. The character ends up getting shot in the head, and is later rescued by Vegas Vic, a robot who acts as an assistant to Doctor Mitchell. He heals you, and after that you can start with the character creation process. Unlike before, where you started off as a baby, child, and then progressed on as the tenacious teenager, this time you can choose your age.

Not to mention that there’s a hardcore mode which will make your life more miserable and probably more realistic in the game.

Here’s some more new screenshots by the way:

Other interesting, and probably unsurprising, news is that Fallout: New Vegas will receive a Collector’s Edition. Obvious since the game is set around what was formerly known as Las Vegas, the pack will offer “Lucky 7” poker chips, a "Lucky 38" platinum chip, a deck of cards with illustrations of characters in the game, "The Making of Fallout: New Vegas" DVD – a documentary with some behind the scenes stuff, and a hardcover graphic novel called "All Roads", which basically tells the story leading up to that of the game.

The price of this Edition has been set for the PC as $69.99. By the way, there are some folk who are confident that this will outsell Fallout 3, if that’s possible.

One of the Best Episodes of The Verge Yet

CoP_Cover image4 As I’m sitting here right now. I’m watching The Verge, a local show broadcast live every night at 9:30 PM on DSTV [Channel 123 – Vuzu].

It might just be one of the best episodes I’ve seen in a while. Usually they have a copy of a new game to give away on some episodes, and they’re usually for consoles like PS3 and Xbox 360. But this time, and maybe the first time ever, there’s a give away for the PC, and it’s Stalker: Call of Pripyat, that latest in the series.

To win the game, you have to send in either an SMS or a message from the Vuzu website with the title of the first game, which is Shadow of Chernobyl, in a sentence. That’s all I’m saying. Oh, and you have to have “PC” after the message for it to count.

Those are the two versions of cover art available for the game. One is the European one I think, and the other is the North American one.

On a related note, Pippa Tshabalala, the host, revealed that her maiden name before she got married was… Stalker. Whether that’s true or not, I don’t know. She says it is. By the way, she’s dyed her hair blonde.

There are also trailers of Brink, Medal of Honor, and Fallout: New Vegas.

Fallout: New Vegas - Details, Features, Vegas, Baby

FNV1

Fallout: New Vegas details were given in issues of various magazines lately, one of them none other that PC Gamer. I used to read that magazine a lot, but it costs a lot to buy here, I think, and the availability is also a problem seeing as Paperweight in Tygervalley Centre closed down.

Anyway, about those details. Everyone else is doing these lists, so I thought I would too. They’re not exactly the same as other blogs though. I did take the time to read through most of them, reword them, and add in my own little comments, as well as exclude all the fluff. Fun!

  • It's a first-person RPG. Fallout 3 had third person view as well, so whether they will opt to incorporate this or not will become apparent as time goes by.
  • It uses the same engine as Fallout 3: Gamebryo.
  • A new "Hardcore mode" will be available, in which stimpacks heal over time instead of instantly, ammo has weight (Fallout 3’s ammo didn’t), and players can suffer from dehydration, unless they drink something.
  • The story focuses on a conflict between three factions: the New California Republic, supposedly from Fallout 2, and located at McCarran Airport, Caesar's Legions, located on the Vegas strip, and the residents of New Vegas. The Super mutants are at Black Mountain.
  • Instead of the Capital Wasteland, like in Fallout 3, this wasteland is referred to as the “Mojave wastelands”.
  • The city of Las Vegas is mostly still intact, but it’s probably not in the same condition as it was hundreds of years ago.
  • There are new super mutants, as well as ones from Fallout 2 and 3 with different attributes, including the elite Nightkin.
  • Locations in the game include Fremont, Primm, the Hoover Dam, and Area 51 (Yeah!).
  • The player is not a Vault Dweller like in Fallout 3 but a courier who is rescued by a friendly robot.
  • You will have a Pip-Boy, but it’s given to you by a vault dweller.
  • New weapons will be available. Apparently one that looks like an M4 assault rifle (part of the M16 family. Come on, you’ve played Modern Warfare!). Wonder if the H&K 33A2 (or G3A3) model and the Chinese assault rifle will come back?
  • Followers can be managed via a context-sensitive menu. Thank you. No more having to keep going back and forth and talking to them all the time.
  • There are special moves for melee weapons in VATS.
  • Skills have a bigger effect on conversation choices.
  • There is a Reputation system in addition to Karma, like in the Elder Scrolls games such as Morrowind.

In related and covered news, a trailer was released for New Vegas recently, and the release date was given as Fall 2010.

Fallout: New Vegas Coming Mid-2010, New Trailer

FNV I seem to recall a while back, in fact it was last month, that this title was said to be coming this year. Now the word is that Fallout: New Vegas will be coming in “Fall” this year, but by saying, that they’re referring to the Northern Hemisphere, so to clear things up a bit for us down in the Southern part of  the world: somewhere in the middle of 2010. I remember reading it was about June, but Fall could mean somewhere in a three month target.

In addition to this, a trailer for the game has been released, showing a glimpse of what the trip to Las Vegas, or what’s left of it, will be like.

Fallout: New Vegas

New Vegas is being developed by Obsidian, published by Bethesda, and it should be out this year. The game is not a sequel to Fallout 3 or any other Fallout title, but is classified as more of a spin-off title in the same series or universe. It does take place on the West Coast of the former United States, more akin to the first Fallout games, and unlike Fallout 3 which took place for the most part on the East Coast, in Washington D.C.

I’m a little doubtful about the Fall release date actually. Even though it’s been in development for some time, we’ve hardly seen anything of the game, although, the word is we’ll be hearing and seeing more of it soon. So things could be looking up.

Fallout: New Vegas Possibly Coming in June 2010, New Game Info Coming Soon

Fallout_NV It came from a forum post on DuckAndCover, a Fallout fan-site, that GameStop and Play-Asia have listed release dates as June 2010 for Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian’s RPG title that we’ve heard of, but seen little.

I’ve just had a look on Amazon, and the game is unavailable for pre-order, for PS3 and Xbox 360. Not sure where the PC version is. Amazon doesn’t seem to have any release date listed.

In addition to this news, the British version of OXM, Official Xbox Magazine, will have the first exclusive information on the game in next month’s issue. It was falsely reported a few days ago that it would be Game Informer magazine that would get the scoop on New Vegas. Bethesda subsequently refused to comment on these rumours and it’s been proposed that this was false information.

Some of this info on the game that was on a Gamespot forum claimed that there would be character selection (rather than creation), drivable vehicles, and gambling – seeing as the game will take place in Las Vegas… or what’s left of it anyway.
