Guinness Names the Top 50 Best Video Games Series

CoD4 So, Guinness thought it would have a crack at listing the Top 50 Video Games series of all time. This time gamers were able to vote for the list, instead of in the gaming edition of Guinness Book of World Records.

I’ve got the list here, and I will make my comments either next to it or somewhere else. Why? Because everyone has their own opinion. And don’t we all like to deride someone else’s work – especially lists? Yes!

  1. Halo [Overrated. Crysis 2’s writer would agree with me here.]
  2. Call of Duty [See above, but still better than the first.]
  3. The Legend of Zelda
  4. Guitar Hero
  5. Metal Gear [Yes.]
  6. Super Mario Bros.
  7. World of Warcraft
  8. Gears of War
  9. Super Smash Bros.
  10. Grand Theft Auto [Definitely.]
  11. Pokémon [I only ever played one Pokémon game in my whole life – so…]
  12. Resident Evil [Yes, I’ve played a few.]
  13. Fallout [Yes.]
  14. Half-Life [Definitely.]
  15. Sonic the Hedgehog [I only ever played one game in my whole life – so…]
  16. Counter-Strike [Probably.]
  17. Runescape
  18. FIFA [I only ever played one game in my whole life – so…]
  19. Kingdom Hearts [Never played it.]
  20. Final Fantasy [Never played it.]
  21. Pac-Man [Yeah!]
  22. Madden NFL [Never played it]
  23. The Sims [Damn right!]
  24. Tomb Raider [Yep.]
  25. WWE Smackdown Vs. RAW [Belongs here somewhere.]
  26. Rock Band
  27. LittleBigPlanet
  28. Saints Row
  29. The Elder Scrolls [Yes.]
  30. God of War
  31. GoldenEye 007 [Everyone likes the game, so won’t argue.]
  32. Bioshock [Yep.]
  33. KillZone [Everyone likes the game, so won’t argue.]
  34. Skate [Probably. Preferred THPS Games.]
  35. Left 4 Dead [Maybe.]
  36. Need for Speed [Yes. Played the first few.]
  37. Chrono Trigger [Never played it.]
  38. Gran Turismo [Played the first couple.]
  39. StarCraft [Yes.]
  40. Ratchet & Clank
  41. Pong
  42. Tom Clancy's [Damn right! The Original Rainbow Six and Ghost Recons, as well as Splinter Cell.]
  43. Star Wars: Battlefront [Never played it]
  44. Battlefield [Yep.]
  45. Diablo [Yes.]
  46. Lego Batman
  47. Mario Kart
  48. Burnout
  49. Crash Bandicoot [Yes.]
  50. Pro Evolution Soccer

Doom? Quake? Duke Nukem? System Shock? Thief? Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater? Mortal Kombat? Mass Effect? Medal of Honor? Command& Conquer?! Red Alert?! Jagged Alliance?! WORMS?! Some horrible omissions here. Practically nothing older than late 90’s. Anyway…

It’s like I always say: it’s down to personal opinion, and your own is the only one that really matters.

Bungie Re-Trademarks Marathon

Bungie_Marathon_poster225p Long before Halo, there was Marathon. In fact it was a trilogy of games made by Bungie, the same people. They were released in the mid 90’s, mainly for the Mac, but were largely ignored by the PC audience, who were too busy playing Doom and Doom II. In fact only the second game, Marathon 2 was ever released on the platform.

Anyhow, it was picked up by Superannuation the other day that Bungie has re-trademarked the name Marathon.

Now comes speculation time. I doubt it’s going to be a re-release seeing as the Marathon games were released as freeware years ago. It could be some sort of re-boot, seeing as another cherished game from the 90’s, Rise of the Triad, recently got an iPhone version of the game.

There might be plans to remake one of those games, seeing as Doom was sort of remade in Doom 3, and Doom 4 might well be a remake of Doom II: Hell on Earth. But that’s just a rumour.

I somehow doubt that Bungie or anyone else would ever consider making a sequel in the series, seeing as the Halo games are really spiritual successors to the Marathon series. So, if they wanted to make another Marathon, they could just make another Halo, which is what they’re doing with Halo: Reach.

But I could be wrong.

Some rumours say it’s because one of the games might appear on Xbox Live Arcade. The 2nd game, Marathon 2: Durandal, was released on XBLA nearly three years back.

Then again, it could be nothing…

Halo 3: ODST has Been Leaked

People always shake their heads when they see yet another PC title leaked and pirated, and go on about how PC gaming is dying, and PC gamers are scum. Well, this time it's a major Xbox 360 title, and so I get to do the honours. razz

Halo 3: ODST has been leaked, and Microsoft is investigating it at this time.

So remember: Buy it, don't even try it. Piracy is illegal, and you are a criminal if you partake in the activity. And yes, you probably will go to hell as well.

Rather pre-order the game here. Tsk, tsk.

What does AAA stand for?

It's not an abbreviation of anything. It just means the best of the best...
