On Saturday I went down to my local Cell C store and purchased the 5 GB a month Speed Stick promotion for R2999 up front; prepaid. You get a 21.6 mbps USB modem, and of course 5 GB a month, for a year. It roughly works out to R250 a month – cheaper than buying it on contract (R300 a month; R3600 a year), and probably a lot cheaper than a lot of deals out there.
Yes, ISPs say they only charge so much per GB, but that doesn’t include installation fees, line rental, and other costs.
I wanted to avoid going with Telkom, and having lines put it after being on a waiting list and so on – in fact I don’t even think I can get an ADSL line brought in. Until now I’ve been using ChaosNET dialup (eeeek!) with MTN data bundles to help me do everything I do online. This is the first proper broadband solution I’ve had.
Looking back, perhaps the 2 GB would have been enough, but I was lead to believe that it isn’t. But I look at it this way: at least I can grab The Dark Mod, finally, among other things!
The speeds here in Cape Town aren’t all that good – you’ll be lucky if you get a quarter of the advertised speeds for the moment (the highest is probably half). But it’s still faster than what I’ve been using up until this point, for sure… when I actually get a signal anyway, weather and other conditions permitting.
